Guest Agent of Oblivion
bongo.jpg and Neurosis-The Eye of Every Storm, and I'm loving both. Zappa/Beefheart is a live show in Austin, TX laced with country and blues licks. Very good. The new Neurosis is growing on me like all Neurosis cds do. I usually miss the bus the first time I listen to it, then eventually I find something to latch on to and get completely sucked in. Another excellent release from them.

Guest JebusNassedar

My older brother repaid a $200 debt to me, so I scurried down to tower, and came back with a lot of CDs, most old, and one of which being a dark horse for album of the year.

dredg - "leitmotif"

Repurchase. Friend moved away with my old copy.

Frank Zappa - "Weasels Ripped My Flesh"

Frank Zappa - "Apostrophe"

Frank Zappa - "Sheik Yerbouti"

Love 'em all.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Take Them On, On Your Own"

CD I've been meaning to buy for a long damn time. Pretty good. "US Government" is pwn.

Faith No More - "Angel Dust"

See above. Only replace "US Government" with "Land of Sunshine."

And then there's this thing.

Dear lord. The CD is insane, and yet spectacular. Ever since seeing them open for dredg earlier this year, I've been fascinated by the band, and this CD doesnt change that one bit. I had no idea this CD was out, and now that I have it, I adore it.

Two this time:

John Coltrane- Blue Train

Social Distortion- Sex, Love & Rock N' Roll

I gotta say, the new Social D is fucking great. "Footprints On My Ceiling" is definitely the standout track.

Jeebus, great pick-up with Angel Dust. "Land of Sunshine" is fucking great, but "Smaller & Smaller" is the best track they've ever done if you ask me.

Kind of Blue on vinyl

how much was this?

and i can't remember the last time i put miles on, i might be overdue. maybe that's the reason i've been so apathetic lately.

derek and the dominos - 'layla and other assorted love songs'. already owned it on vinyl, but my turntable is back in georgia so i bought the cd. a tad overrated and not exactly tight, but it rocks & it's compulsively listenable.

"The Royal Society" - The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster

Bought this today, had most of it on download anyway but needed to have a proper copy. This is even better than the first album which I loved to bits.

Depeche Mode-Remixes 81-04 (Limited Edition 3 disc set) . I'd give it 9/10. Inspire of a few poor mixes, and the exclusion of the Orb's exceptional mix of "Happiest Girl", it's a pretty awesome. I'm actually going to review it disc for disc on the board soon.

ben allison & medicine wheel - 'riding the nuclear tiger'

saw these guys at birdland a couple months ago and they killed. fans of mingus would probably want to check this out, as there's HEAVY mingus influence going on in the approach: the bandleader is a fantastic bassist, there's a focus on playing with rhythms & pulse, and there's a huge emphasis on composition.

i like it overall, but i have a lot of the same problems with it that i have with mingus: the approach is a little too tightly constructed, not leaving enough wiggle room for the musicians to take charge and really explore things. a little too snug & catchy & easy to listen to. i like to be challenged more. i may write up a review of it later if my motivation doesn't get lost in all the papers i'm supposed to be working on.
