Styles Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 by Dave Meltzer [email protected] We're sorry to report the news that Jack Tunney, the former figurehead President of the WWE, passed away on Saturday at the age of 68. Tunney was involved for years in the promotion of pro wrestling in Toronto. There will be a funeral tomorrow at the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church on 354 St. Clair Avenue West at 10 a.m. Wow, that's sad. I'm assuming he was sick with something. At least our first death of the year is one of old and not young age...
1234-5678 Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 That's what he gets for not signing a Warrior-Hogan rematch back in 1990! J/k, rest in peace Jack.
Youth N Asia Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Sorry to hear that...I liked Jack and liked that they use to have a non heel/face guy in charged...made the shows more watchable.
Guest Bottled Black Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 RIP to an "authority figure" who actually took a back seat to the performers. There's a novel idea. Do you think they'll acknowledge it? Or give it the Crash Holly treatment?
Guest Krazy Karter Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 RIP Jack Remember in WWF Magazine in 1994 they had pictures of DiBiase handing him money? Did an angle ever come from that?
Downhome Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I hate to hear this also, he was the kind of authority figure that I really enjoy. This just came out of nowhere, I haven't heard anything about the guy in years. Thanks a lot Jack Tunney, President Tunney.
Nevermortal Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 So fucking weird... Last night I asked everyone in the room who was watching the Rumble where Jack Tunney was, and my friend said that he thought Jack was dead. WHY AM I THE HARBINGER OF SORROW?
Guest Krazy Karter Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 So fucking weird... Last night I asked everyone in the room who was watching the Rumble where Jack Tunney was, and my friend said that he thought Jack was dead. WHY AM I THE HARBINGER OF SORROW? :: kicks Nevermortal in shins for not asking where HHH was ::
NoCalMike Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I have some many memories of this guy from childhood and how WWE(F) did such a great job of making it seem super important whenever Jack Tunney was going to speak. It is so oversaturated nowadays with the NEW type of authority angles/gimmicks. RIP Jack.
Guest Razor Roman Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 That's so sad. Last night at the Rumble, my brother and I were talking about Jack Tunney. Best wishes to his family.
Tawren Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Wow, that sucks. He was an awesome "backseat owner" style guy.
TheFranchise Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 So fucking weird... Last night I asked everyone in the room who was watching the Rumble where Jack Tunney was, and my friend said that he thought Jack was dead. WHY AM I THE HARBINGER OF SORROW? :: kicks Nevermortal in shins for not asking where HHH was :: Sad timing... but that was great.
Guest Astro Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 Well we have the old ... now we need the bizarre/shocker and the young?
haVoc Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 RIP Jack Jack Tunney was the first non-wrestling character I hated.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 One of the most effective heels in WWF history.
Guest Trivia247 Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 There goes my dream in Tunney coming back at Wm and Wrestling control away from Bischoff and Heyman
The Kid Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 RIP...I wish the "authority figures" were represented like that nowadays.
HarleyQuinn Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 RIP Jack Tunney, loved seeing him book the matches when I was young as the WWF Figurehead and still remember the coin flip after the 94' Rumble quite distinctly because of the importance they gave it with Tunney getting involved.
EdwardKnoxII Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 I'm sad to see Jack Tunney go he was the kind of authority figure that wasn't a heel or face and only came out with on screen when mattered. That's what we need nowadays. RIP Jack.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted January 26, 2004 Report Posted January 26, 2004 So fucking weird... Last night I asked everyone in the room who was watching the Rumble where Jack Tunney was, and my friend said that he thought Jack was dead. I asked the same thing after watching RR 92 on my Flair DVD the other night.
2GOLD Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 A sad moment and the video package tonight will probably just be sadder. May he enjoy his place as the President of the giant wrestling organization in the sky and make sure nothing goes wrong in the Owen/Perfect match for the title.
EdwardKnoxII Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 You know the thing is I'm kinda shocked he was only 68. Cause as a kid I thought he was around that age.
Slingshot Suplex Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 I never really thought much about Jack Tunney in my early days of watching but as the years went....and watching the overreliance on the authroity figures in wrestling.... I came to appreciate his and someone like Jim Crockett's on air role. They only usually came on for something important and made it mean more.
DerangedHermit Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 That sucks. Honestly, he was the best figurehead because he was neither a heel or a face. They should get neutral GMs (who would be good for this?) and they report only to Linda McMahon (who would be neutral)
Guest Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Someone like a Mike Tenay or Tony Schiavone, or even a Bobby Heenan, if he could pull it off w/o favoring the heels too much.
Bruiser Chong Posted January 27, 2004 Report Posted January 27, 2004 Jack is in peace? What? I think he meant to say that he's a dipshit and an insult to fellow 13-year-olds all across the globe.
