Mik Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/sportsnation/franchiseRanks It's based on a ranking system that includes some things such as bang for the buck, ownership, likeability of players, as well as a few other categories including championships or likelihood of upcoming championships. Florida Marlins ranked #24 overall.
HarleyQuinn Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 We created the Ultimate Standings in four steps: First, Markitecture, an independent Norwalk, Conn., research firm, conducted a national poll to determine what sports fans most care about "getting back" from the teams they root for. Phone calls to 1,000 American and Canadian sports fans yielded 21 significant items, from "players who always give their best effort" to "frequency of fan promotions, contests and giveaways." Second, through ESPN.com, we asked fans of every team to rate their club in these 21 areas. Each user was allowed to rate only one team per sport, and we gathered more than 31,000 responses. Third, we aggregated the ratings for the 21 items into eight broad categories. For seven of these categories, we used the data collected from fans: Affordability; Players (quality and appeal); Coaching; Owner; Championships (past and potential); Fan Relations; and Stadium (or arena) Experience. BNG (Bang for the Buck): 15.8% Revenues directly from fans divided by wins in the past three years FRL (Fan Relations): 16.2% Ease of access to players, coaches and management OWN (Ownership): 15.5% Honesty; loyalty to players and city AFF (Affordability): 10.5% Price of tickets, parking and concessions STD (Stadium Experience): 12.7% Friendliness of environment; quality of game-day promotions PLA (Players): 13.0% Effort on the field; likability off it CCH (Coach/Manager): 8.6% Strong on-field leadership CHA (Championships): 7.7% Titles already won or expected -- soon Therefore, we found the overall rating using this formula: Overall = (BNG x .158) + (FRL x .162) + (OWN x .155) + (AFF x .105) + (STD x .127) + (PLA x .130) + (CCH x .086) + (CHA x .077)
HarleyQuinn Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 New England Patriots: 13 Boston Celtics: 61 Boston Bruins: 89 Boston Red Sox: 95 Go Boston teams, w00t!
MrRant Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 54. Seattle Seahawks 60. Seattle Sonics 67. Seattle Mariners
Kahran Ramsus Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 3. Green Bay Packers 10. Ottawa Senators 47. Toronto Blue Jays 50. Toronto Raptors
treble Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 The Leafs got hosed. How do teams like Florida and Carolina rank ahead of them in terms of championships? I'm not saying that they should be #1 or even in the top 10 or 20, but 24th (88th overall) is bullshit.

Guest Salacious Crumb Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 How are the Detroit Lions who've absolutely sucked the last 3 seasons ahead of the Browns who were in playoff contention the last 2/3 seasons?

treble Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 Yeah, but I don't see how the Panthers or Hurricanes are expected to win a Cup any sooner than the Leafs are. Both of them have had fluke runs to the Finals in the past 10 years or so, but that's about it.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted February 3, 2004 Report Posted February 3, 2004 The Bills finished below the Sabres.

Both of them have had fluke runs to the Finals in the past 10 years or so, but that's about it. The ultimate insult: They also finished behind the BLUE JACKETS.
Kahran Ramsus Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 106. Minnesota Vikings I find this hilarious.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 93 - Bulls 99 - White Sox 103 - Bears 120 - Blackhawks please kill me
snuffbox Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 106. Minnesota Vikings I find this hilarious. ...and Green Bay is at #3 overall.
Lightning Flik Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 (edited) #8 Edmonton Oilers ...that...is...so...FUCKED UP~! Seriously, I admit that I'm a hometown boy and the Oilers are a hell of an organization. But still, us, at 8th? I'm honored, but even I think that's not right. Sure, we are successful but the best team out of all the NHL franchises? Uh, no. Top 10 out of all the franchises? Uh, no. Maybe more like 15-20th is where I'd rank my own squad. We are good, but not as good as they seemingly make us out to be. Edited February 4, 2004 by Lightning Flik
EVIL~! alkeiper Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Its WAY too concerned with recent history. The Marlins only BARELY outdrew the Expos in 2002, and they only did so because a "mysterious fan" bought thousands of tickets the last game of the season.
Bored Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Bay Area teams 39. San Francisco Giants 66. Oakland Athletics 72. San Francisco 49ers 83. San Jose Sharks 94. Golden State Warriors 104. Oakland Raiders Damn what did the A's do to drop that far from #11 last year? Love the Raiders low rank although the Warriors should be near the bottom.
NYU Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 NEW YORK METS: Ranked 111 2004: Anything George can do, Fred can do better . . . in owner Fred Wilpon's dreams, anyway. In real life, last year's nightmare is reflected in fan feelings about what-hit-me skipper Art Howe and a hapless crew that finished dead last in the NL East. Can Kazuo Matsui keep gotta-believe fans from flushing their hopes down the toilet by Memorial Day . . . again? If he can't, the Mets could earn that rare distinction in next year's rankings: triple digits across the board. Overall: 111th Bang For The Buck: 107th Fan Relations: 112th Ownership: 69th Affordability: 114th Stadium Experience: 114th Players: 111th Coach/Manager: 100th Championships: 38th Well, can't say I disagree at all. I'm not too excited after this offseason, but I'll root for them anyway. I just hope they'll actually still be in a race by JUNE. Cause, you know, with the Mets - that's not assured at all. Just look at last season.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 22. Baltimore Ravens 84. Baltimore Orioles How are the Orioles ahead of the Red Sox?
Slayer Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Ehhh, rather than comparing total ranks, I thought I'd make it a bit more interesting to look at each category. Here are the top five from each Bang for Buck 1 Edmonton Oilers 2 Philadelphia Eagles 3 Montreal Expos 4 San Antonio Spurs 5 Arizona Diamondbacks Fan Relations 1 San Antonio Spurs 2 Dallas Mavericks 3 Green Bay Packers 4 KC Chiefs 5 Detroit Red Wings Ownership 1 Green Bay Packers 2 San Antonio Spurs 3 Detroit Red Wings 4 KC Chiefs 5 Dallas Mavericks Affordability 1 KC Royals 2 Montral Expos 3 Memphis Grizzlies 4 San Antonio Spurs 5 Minnesota Twins Stadium 1 Columbus Blue Jackers 2 Minnesota Wild 3 Dallas Mavericks 4 Green Bay Packers 5 Chicago Cubs Players 1 San Antonio Spurs 2 Tennessee Titans 3 Detroit Pistons 4 Florida Marlins 5 KC Chiefs Coach 1 Dallas Cowboys 2 KC Chiefs 3 Utah Jazz 4 Minnesota Wild 5 Anaheim Angels Championships 1 New York Yankees 2 San Antonio Spurs 3 New Jersey Devils 4 Florida Marlins 5 Detroit Red Wings
Human Fly Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 The Bengals up to 74 from dead last the previous season. Thank you Marvin Lews, for lifting our franchise out of the sewer.
Cuban Linx Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 The Portland Trailblazers are about where i expected, 115th, including dead last in Fan Relations and Players. At least they seem to be making a little effort in those departments, with Bonzi Wells gone and both Rasheed Wallace and Ruben Patterson unlikely to be around much longer.
Guest Olympic Slam Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 39. San Francisco Giants - No surprise. Pac Bell alone makes these guys the kings of the Bay Area. That Bonds guy helps matters. 66. Oakland Athletics - Four straight flameouts in the ALDS and a revolving door roster hurts. I have a heck of a time trying to care about the A's as I need a program before every game to remember whose who. Too bad, the A's used to be my # 1 team. I miss the old style Coliseum with actual bleachers! 72. San Francisco 49ers - Another drop in the standings. Firing Mariucci was a mistake de jour. 83. San Jose Sharks - Big dip from last year. Blowing up the team and having the 2nd most expensive concessions in the NHL can't help. Unemployment in Silcon Valley has hurt the Sharks at the gate. Attendance has gone from 99% to 89%. I'm only going to 12 games this season instead of the 20+ I saw last year. 94. Golden State Warriors - Depressing, faceless team with little hope. Decent ticket deals help keep them from the bottom of the Bay Area. 104. Oakland Raiders - Every home game is blacked out because it's impossible to fill the Coliseum to capacity. Fans still aren't over the Snow Job and the Super Bowl.
Vern Gagne Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Let's face it about the Twins and Vikings. They have horeshit owners, and do play in a third rate stadium. I think should be ranked higher than 106th, but should defintley be below the Packers.
Guest Jimbo Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 Damnit, I knew we sucked, but I didn't know we sucked THIS bad. Washington teams: Caps: 109 Wiz: 105 'Skins: 92 .....ouch I don't think there are any cities remotely close to our immense suckiness. Yeesh..
Guest Salacious Crumb Posted February 4, 2004 Report Posted February 4, 2004 The Jackets are the perfect example of how to build an NHL team. Great stadium experience has helped build a fanbase despite lack of success.
