As noted in the TNA thread tonight....

Goldust is usually entertaining and somewhat controversial.

Dustin Rhodes is usually neither of those....although there was the time after the Marlena split.

How many other instances have there been someone that was so defined by the gimmick that without it ,they just really weren't the same?

The Undertaker. Who knew "Mean" Mark Callous?

Okay, who knew the Undertaker?

Case closed.

Hulk Hogan - I mean, really. He always and forever will be, Hulk Hogan.

Vincent Kennedy McMahon - Sounds strange, but will you EVER remember the guy as a successful business man (he took WWE and made it Global, that is success)? Nope. Just an insane mad man running the WWE.

Kurt Angle - When he's the Olympic Jackass, we like him. Otherwise, we tend to forget he's there.

(So far) John Cena - His current Rapper gimmick is being molded into him that I doubt he'll probably ever need to change it. It's kinda funny that way.

Stone Cold Steve Austin - Say what you will, but do most people remember "Stunning" Steve? The Ringmaster? Not really. Stone Cold is what people will probably remember to the end of their days.

HHH - Anyone really remember that pompus ass nobel called, Hunter Hearst Helmsley? No? Anyone remember The Game? Yes? Good.

Edge - He's just fun loving, dorky (heel or face) Edge. Only time he was different was when he was in the Brood.

Lance Storm - Who preferred Lance Storm in his "Can I Be Serious For A Moment" Schtick? I know I certainly did. Anything other than that, and Lance just flops.

Just the few I could pick off of my head.

Doink - Matt Borne wasn't exactly setting new attendence records as "Big Josh", although I hear his "Rat Pack" days in Midsouth drew well

Kane - Glen Jacobs would be wrestling as Isaac Yankem in front of 100 people if it wasn't for this gimmick,i'll give him props for the life he's gotten out of a gimmick which seemed destined to last 6 months and then be killed.

Or as a Christmas Tree, or maybe as a Diesel ripoff in some near-backyard level federation.

Has there ever been a time when Vader wasn't the big huge dominating monster? Also Ric Flair, Rock, and Scott Hall come to mind

I think the answer to this is what gimmicks could be played by any wrestler. Doink and Kane are 2 prime examples of the gimmick being of working for multiple men.

Sandman- Remember his surfer days? Me neither...well, except for the hideous ring attire.

Raven- Scotty Flamingo anyone? Thought not.

Blue Meanie- Hilarious in ECW and WWF. Blue Boy? Just not the same.

Buff Bagwell- Never would have got over as Marcus Alexander Bagwell.

I was tempted to say Luger too, but I loved his early 90's NWA title reign for some reason.

If we go back to the pre-New Generation days...The Bushwackers...Hillbilly Jim...Iron Shiek..."Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase...King Kong Bundy...The Uuuuuuultimate Warrior...Hacksaw" Jim Duggan...probably a few more.

I believe that once Charles Wright took on the role of The Godfather, not even the powers of Papa Shango and Kama combined could take him out of the gimmick.

Rikishi's thong wearing, dancing fat man gimmick is probably going to go down as his legacy rather than Headshrinker Fatu, The Sultan, or "Make a Difference" Fatu

Wow now that I think about it, I completely forgot that he was part of the SST

well, there was the time in 98 where he was the self-proclaimed "fat piece of shit"...

I can't think of too many that haven't been said. There can be arguements for guys like Roaddogg, but that is more of a personality now, as I am assuming it is similar to what he is doing with B.G. James.

I kinda saw it odd when Crash was a Mattitude Follower, just because that didn't seem like Crash, but that may be argument for a different thread, because I don't think it exactly fits the question.

The only one that I don't recall being mentioned is Scotty 2 Hotty. Although by now I doubt they will remake him by now, but I'd assume if they ever decided to make him a serious Scott Taylor (maybe for revamped Cruiser division of whatver), it would never work and only be met with chants for "The Worm".

Well, he was JTTS Leon "Bull Power" White in the AWA.

But, that was 1986.

Has there been anyone else like Dustin Rhodes though? The Goldust gimmick made him a big name and at least an upper midcard guy. Then it was discarded and Dustin languished around the lowcard of the WWF and WCW until he returned to the Goldust character and got over again. Not as much as he was in the first run,but more than anything else he's done.

And I think he even went by "the Baby Bull" before he was "Bull Power". All I remember about him from that era was how bad Hansen brutalized him (both in the storylines and in reality).
