Matt Young 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 This poll is pretty simple. Vote for your favorite genre of games and then tell us why you like it. I'd like to get an idea of what type of agming preferences the posters here have. As for me, this is tough. Over the past 17 years, I have amassed a collection of great games from every genre on this list. My 3 favorite games of all time are an adventure game, an action game, and an RPG, respectively. In addition to those, though, I have a ton of sports and wrestling games, and it's hard to top an addictive multiplayer FPS or puzzle game. However, my favorite genre of all time has to be the arcade style beat-em-up, especially the 2D variety. Those games are what I grew up on, and most were quite fun to play. Back in the days of the NES and later the SNES/Genesis era, most games were either side scrolling adventures like Mario or side scrolling brawlers where your character would dispatch of endless hordes of enemies until reaching the end of each stage. I must have played hundreds of those games, but they never got old. I still play many of them today. Unfortunately, the beat-em-up style of game is on life support. Very few such games are still being created, and the ones that are are released on the GBA, not any of the home consoles. Occasionally, a developer will release a game that is faithful to the genre's roots and, in some cases, expands on it greatly, like the amazing Viewtiful Joe. Otherwise, emulators and old school consoles are the only means of accessing such greatness. So, how about you guys? What's your favorite style of video game? Guest Askewniverse Report post Posted March 5, 2004 Sports games are my favorite. WWE, Tony Hawk, Madden, ESPN, SSX, etc. What could be better? RPGs are my least favorite. I don't like them at all.
Jer 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 Fighters recently, for the social dynamic. I used to love RPGs, but now I find it hard to just sit by myself for the 60 hours it takes to play them. Fighters you have people over, you make a community, it's a good time. Single player games all feel boring now.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 Puzzle games like Columns, Puyo Puyo, Bubble Bobble, Tetris are my fav right now since they are easy to find the ROMS. Arcade style sports games from Midway are fun its all about Blitz or NBA Jam. Arcade style beat em ups like Final Fight or Double Dragon get all of my time but River City Randsom EX (J) just came out so that is what I am playing now. What gets most of my money is the fighter games like SC2 or Street Fighter vs whatever. Action/Adventure would be Metroid/Castlevania games or platform like Mario and Sonic? I don't care for the racing games unless it is a Mario Kart game. I don't buy new RPGs period.......no new Final Fantasy games for me. FPS are fun but they are all about the same so I will just stick the classic Doom PSX game or Golden Eye. Other games that I play would be Age of Empire type games, I think they are called Real Time Strategy games.
AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2004 Action/Adventure would be Metroid/Castlevania games or platform like Mario and Sonic? Exactly. ^These categories suck! What does "action" and "adventure" mean as categories? Now, "Action/Platform" I understand. "Adventure" I have no idea about, because that's pretty much any platform-ish game. Oh, once upon a time Castlevania played almost nothing like Metroid. I don't buy new RPGs period.......no new Final Fantasy games for me. Not all "new" RPGs suck. Ones by Square and ones with "Xeno" in the title, of course will. Saying you don't like RPGs because you don't like Final Fantasy doesn't mean you don't like RPGs period. It probably just means you have better taste in RPGs than most.
Ced 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2004 My taste in video games has fluctuated recently. After nothing but RPGs for about a year, I picked up my first sports title ever (Madden 2004) and played that for months. Then all of a sudden I'm playing Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII, back to Madden, then freakin' Gallop Racer 2003 of all things! I'm so lost... But, back to the subject on hand. I feel that Puzzle games are my favorite genre with RPGs fading back and Sports titles slowly taking over its place as the number 2. My least favorite, gun to my head, I'd say would be the first person shooter. For some reason, I can never get into them.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2004 Old final fantasy yes but new PS2 final fantasy no. I prefer the action adventure games with the RPG elements than the straight up RPG. I just want to walk around and level up!

Addy 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2004 I get motion sickness and most FPS seem to make me extremely dizzy. Favourites are probably beat-em up's, platformers, survival horror and sports.

Golgo 13 0 Report post Posted March 6, 2004 For the record. I consider action to be going around with the sole purpose of beating up bad guys and a simpler goal in mind, like just getting to the end of the level. Meanwhile adventure has more exploration elements than the former, along with perhaps, multi-tiered goals that you have to get through. I think older platformers like the original Mario games more often fall into action, while many of the recent ones like Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank are adventure. Anyway, it came down to fighting and sports for me, so I just chose sports. My list would probably go something like... Sports. Fighting. Racing. Puzzle. FPS. Action. Adventure. (platformers or otherwise, since I don't consider beat-em-ups a totally separate genre) RPG. Strategy. Like I said, I prefer sports and fighting. Racing, puzzlers, FPS, action and adventure are lumped in together since I enjoy all pretty equally. Far and away my least favorite genres are strategy and RPGs, though I'm a little more willing to play RPGs.
Guest Skironox Report post Posted March 6, 2004 5 years ago the answer would have been RPG's. Now that Square has ruined the genre with the whole "interactive movie" concept I just don't care to play them anymore. Though I probably will get FFXI online... The genre I enjoy the most on a frequent basis these days is probably Strategy games. My least favorite? Sports. I play f'n video games, you expect me to like sports? Guest Coffey Report post Posted March 6, 2004 Well, I meant to vote for fighting games, but I clicked on View Results (Vote Null) by accident. Most of my favorite games growing up, especially during my teen years, were fighting games. Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 2, X-men Vs. Street Fighter, WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game, etc. I'm still a big fan of 2D fighters. Especially of the hand drawn variety. I can't really get into 3D or polygon fighters. I hate all Tekken, Soul Edge/Caliber & Virtual Fighter games. I just don't like them. I like the occasional sports game too. Wrestling games. Madden games. Midway basketball games. Things like that. AndrewTS 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2004 Action games would be my favorite, with fighters close behind. It may shock some of you, but I really, really loathe "cinematic" games. Plus, usually those cinematic games make Corman look like Scorcese but people praise them as the greatest thing ever in video games.

But lately, eh, rpgs are harder and harder to get into. I bought Baldurs Gate 2, and havent really gotten into it, and I just baught Xenosaga, but havent even tried it yet(Hitman 2 rules though) Probably the last good RPG i played and liked, was Planescape:Torment. Damn good game. Nowadays I like sports games, and military/mission based games the best

Sadly a lot of the good games are built on the "old school" format and just minisculy change it.
