Kellen Winslow v. Brett Favre

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

I really have no where else to put this, so I'll ask it in its own thread....

Why was Kellen Winslow wrong to call himself a soldier, but it's okay for everyone to call Brett Favre a warrior?

Because Winslow did more than just use the one word, he had an entire analogy about being a soldier going to war, while a real war was going on in Iraq. If he'd said that 5 years ago (when there weren't any major conflicts going on) it wouldn't have caused such a ruckus.

Yeah, he meant it much more literally (and he said it about himself), while Favre is called a warrior in the figurative sense, and he's smart enough to not call himself something like that.

Maybe because Favre actually DONE warrior like qualities like fight through pain and adversity, while Winslow lived off daddy’s name and dropped pass after pass and yet threw a tirade.

Maybe cause Favre has proved himself and isn't just some punk ass college kid?

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

maybe cause after Farve hurts somebody he doesn't loudly proclaim that he doesn't care if the guy is hurt because he's a "fucking warrior"

Dropped pass after pass? Nope. He came up huge in the Fiesta Bowl vs. Ohio State, and made a huge 4th down catch (not an easy catch, either) last year to keep a game winning drive alive against W. Virginia. He had a down year last year, mainly because Brock Berlin was wildly inconsistent, as well as didn't look to Kellen as much as Dorsey did.

Kellen greatly improved his blocking, as well. He, along w/ Ben Troupe, are the 2 best TE's in the draft. Had Dorsey been there 1 more year, Kellen would have had a huge year.

The whole Winslow thing was waaay overblown by the sports media.

This is the same media that's always making some sort of war analogy about football; yet they freak out and act like Winslow commited some great sin.

I Co-sign with you, How many times I've heard football players referred as soldiers/warriors of the gridiron, and how about the battle of the trenches? The Media was making a big deal out of nothing.

I was refering to the game in question where he threw the tirade.

Yeah, but shit if that wasn't the best tirade ever. This kid is just pissed his team lost and he was frustrated, and he just comes out and is like " Take this down, damn right I'm pissed, this is a war, it's a war out there they were gunnin for my legs, if i didn't get them they were gonna get me........ I'm a fucking soldier."

I didn't know it was a sin to let out anger and such when you're frustrated.

It is when you're out there trying to hurt people. It also is when you're an all-american shit talker when you win and you can't take a loss like a man.

After having the shitty season that the University of Miami had, I have no qualms with Winslow's frustration brewing over.

So...if you see a guy losing and smiling like he just got a cookie, then he has no heart and doesn't care about winning. If he gets mad at a lost, he is being a crybaby.

What the fuck are atheletes suppose to do after a game. Fade into the shadows only to appear the following week?

We want them to be prim and proper as if they are British Royality playing a lively game of Cricket.

I think people want athletes to show disappointment after a loss, but not to go ranting and raving to the media about spilled milk. Now this isn't necessarily what I want to see, just what I think others want.

The problem with that is -- and I said this right after the Winslow thing -- the media is ALWAYS there. The reason why we even heard Winslow's "soldier" statement, Shaq's "I don't give a shit," Roy Williams' "I don't give a shit," and most everything Bobby Knight says is because the media just HAS to interview guys immediately after games.

Now, as a member of the print media, I understand why you sometimes have to interview guys immediately after the game, as you may be on a strict deadline. But I don't see the need for immediate interviews for the national broadcast media. They can wait until the guys leave the locker room and have had time to cool down, but most media peopel feel like you have to be RIGHTTHERE as everything happens. I hate the "going-into-the-locker-room" halftime interview where they always ask for strategy and the guy never says much anyway (because the other team could have a scout watching) and the "sweaty-ass, breathing hard, can't think yet" interview that happens almost as the final buzzer is still sounding.

When the media stops bumrushing athletes, you won't hear as many controversial statements.

That's because they want controversal comments. The media doesn't want comments from someone who's had the chance to cool off after getting showered and dressed. They want comments from someone who's fresh from the heat of battle and hasn't had time to calm down and think rationally.

Why is Brett Favre being compared to this kid??

I'm trying to figure out the hypocrisy in the way "this kid" got a bunch of flack from everyone for referring to himself as a soldier, yet those same people go and call Favre (and Pat Ewing, 'Zo Mourning, Emmitt Smith, Steve McNair, etc.) a warrior every week.

Brett can be called a warrior, because he blows up in domes, and throws interception after glorious interception.

You guys remember when Brett Favre broke his throwing thumb and had to miss half the season? It sucked because Green Bay didnt make the playoffs...

And remember in January 1997 when he totally choked in the Superdome...if he hadnt thrown all those picks, the Patriot dynasty would have never began...

Yeah, those were the days.

Horribly.

he's not fit to carry John Elway's jock.

And Kellen Winslow is the MAN...

he's a FUCKIN SOLDIER.

You could say the same for many of Favre's games in domes.
