Who likes this genre? I'm talking about sidescrolling brawlers, like Streets of Rage. It's like the only genre that hasn't gotten better with new systems. The 16 bit ones are still the best. It seems like super heroes get the best beat em ups.

Some of my favorites...

SOR 1, 2, 3

Final Fight 1, 2, 3

X-Men

Punisher

Captain America & The Avengers

I wish developers like Capcom would release collections of the old arcade games or the home ports.

A Capcom or Konami developed old school beat em up based on the Buffy licence would be the best game EVER!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 from NES/Arcade rules, as well as the Simpsons arcade game.

It probably doesn't count, but Contra is so awesome. I'm so glad I finally remembered the name of the game so I could DL it.

Captian Commando

River City Ransom

DJ Boy

Combatribes.

Simpsons

Double Dragon - I only liked the 1st and 2nd games.

Did'nt Capcom make arcade ports for japan only under the name of Capcom Generations for the Playstation?

SOR 3 is really underrated. It's got a bunch of new stuff like rolls, special attacks with weapons and a bunch of new moves. They added in cutscenes between levels to tell more of a story and have different paths you can go through. Also, Axel and Blaze look cool.

Capcom Generations has a bunch of stuff. I don't think any of the beat em ups are on it, but I could be wrong. I know what we got as SF Collection 2 is Capcom Generation 5 or something.

i have a love for SOR 2...just cause i can make it through the whole game without dying once (or only once).

the X-men arcade game is still one of my favorite arcade games of all the time. The big double screen, and me as Nightcrawler whooping ass with the teleport.

Captian Commando

Man, I loved Captain Commando when I was a kid. I dumped so many quarters into that. When I play it now, though, it seems... bad. Still enjoyable enough, but with a sense of "This is what I used to love playing so much?"

More of a slash em up, really, but Strider is my all time favorite game.

So what's the last 'beat 'em up' style game released? Tekken Force? Even though it wasn't a stand alone release, that is the last real beat 'em up I can remember on any modern system.

My favourite series was definitely Streets of Rage, specifically SOR3. Like Sakura, I felt this game was horrendously under-rated, and I spent more hours playing that one than any other in the series. Dr. Zan didn't really do it for me though, I was a Blaze fan all the way.

SOR3, by far, had the coolest bosses, such as the female twins who were close to impossible when the difficulty was set on hard, as well as the awesome Robot Y (correct me if that isn't its name) at the end of the game.

Fuckin' wicked game.

The cream of the crop:

D&D Shadow over mysteria

SOR 1 & 2

Final Fight 1

The Punisher

Battle circuit

TMNT 1 & 2

Guardian heroes

River city randsom

Double Dragon 3

AvP

Golden Axe 2

Cadilliacs and Dinosaurs

The Simpsons

And the newest one Viewtiful Joe

X-men is so overated.

Heh, I like SOR3 as well, so count me in on that. You forgot to mention that it makes good use of the six-button controller, Sakura. The animation and music were disappointing, though.

With a Game Genie, you can play as Ash in the American version.

I was playing Beats of Rage a little while ago--it is a little short on play mechanics but still is a blast. It actually has a sizable fan community as well since it is customizable:

The Peacekeepers gets my vote, because of the best feature ever: Getting angry.

If you got beat up enough, you'd become invincible and all your moves did extra damage. Man, it was so satisfying to break out of a crowd of goons by suplexing them halfway across the screen.

Oh, and you could give people rolling german suplexes.

I must play this game......

To be fair, only one guy could do it, he could only do 2, and he was a special character that you either had to cheat to get, or play to a certain point...but it was still pretty sweet.

And once he got mad (which was actually his super move; getting mad) he could only throw one german...but I mean, THROW. You could clear the screen with some guys. It was great.

There's been some beat em ups since Tekken Force. Like I'd say the Buffy games are beat em ups.

Dr. Zan does kind of suck in SOR3. I didn't like Max in SOR2 either though.

Robot Y is indeed the robot final boss. I like Robot X, the robot version of Mr. X. Its cool how you go up to his office and he's in his chair like the end of SOR1 and 2 but then his skin burns off and it's a robot decoy.

The third one was better with the addition of supermoves.

Time for me to download the ROM then. :D

I too love the beat 'em ups. Sadly, I never got to play Streets of Rage.

wildpegasus: At least try Streets of Rage 2. The others are kind of iffy, but SoR2 is a bonafide classic. If you don't have a Genesis, SoR2 is on the Smash Pack and there's ROMs around.

SoR3 suffers from basically lacking in some areas compared to 2. The music isn't as good, the animation has been downgraded, and the difficulties have been bumped up one (the "Easy" mode in SoR3 is approximately like Bare Knuckle 3's Normal mode).

SoR1 is fun, but really shows its age, with smaller sprites, poorer colors/animation compared to 2, lacking attacks compared to 2. It's still rather fun today, but doesn't have the lasting appeal.

Pegasus, by all means, go download a Megadrive Emulator and get some SOR ROMS. It'll take 10 minutes tops and you can literally blow a whole afternoon away just tearing through thugs.

I guess you could say the Lord of the Rings games for PS2 (I've no clue if they are available for other systems), such as Return of the King, are beat 'em ups, however there are other gaming elements mixed in there as well.

Someone should make a new Altered Beast or Golden Axe. Those were always 2 of my favorites.

The GBA got a sequel to Altered Beast. I haven't played it, but despite it being made by the same people who gave us that bad Revenge of Shinobi for GBA, it is supposed to be good.

Golden Axe got a Sega Ages revamp, but it is supposed to be bad.

Thanks for the responses. I've never gotten into the downloading video game thing yet. I play Pac Man which for some reason makes me dizzy (the only game ever to do so) but that's it. Do the games take up much space on your computer? Are most games joysick compatible?

Has anyone played the new TMNT game? Is it any good? It looked like it was in the spirit of the old ones.

Ahh... a Gamecube version of the original TMNT arcade game with full 4 player action.... I would go out to home depot and start building an arcade cabinet for it right now, if that title were ever announced!

Posted

The new Ninja Turtles games is pretty much like the older arcade game...with the single most annoying sounds in the history of gaming. It is a great, shortish, beat-em up game with the mute button on.

Oh yeah, that Cadillacs and Dinosaurs game...or Dinaosaurs and Cadillacs...what the fuck ever it was called...it kicked ass.

Posted

I know nobody else liked Fighting Force, but I did. It was a decent, albeit mindless (but isn't every one like that?) beat-em-up.

Has anyone mentioned Die Hard: The Arcade Game? Another good one. I remember putting in tons of gametime for that.

Posted

I liked Fighting Force as well, but it hasn't aged well.

Die Hard Arcade I haven't played in a long time, but the sequel, Dynamite Cop, is very good as well. DHA was basically just the first game with new textures slapped onto the hero.

The Shenmue-esque cinema sequences can be slightly annoying, but that's not too much of a problem. Besides, there are some hilarious weapons.

Zombie Revenge, also on Dreamcast, is rather fun as well, but gets pretty difficult once you get to the first real boss. Controls are iffy sometimes, but it's dirt cheap.
