Daredevil movie vs. Hulk movie

Guest The Midnight Rocking Warrior

A lot of people didn't like these two movies, yet they have their number of supporters. I think they both have their good points. I was just curious as to which you think is better. Here's my analysis of the acting :

Leading actor: A lot of people complain about these two, but I'll try to defend them both. I won't argue that Afleck was good in Daredevil, but he would have never " Won" the razzie if it weren't for Gigli. Bana's performance is really misunderstood. While, it wasn't Oscar worthy, I don't think that it was razzie worthy, either. The thing is that Bruce Banner was supposed to be emotionally distant, they even said it in the movie. Some people thought it was a bad performance, other people thought it was good. I happen to think the latter. So if I had to choose, I would say Bana was better, hands down.

Villan: I thought that Duncan was decent, as was Nolte. But Colin Farrell's performance as Bullseye surpassed them both.

Lead actress- Jennifer Connely, without a doubt.

Opinions?

Both were good movies, but having watched both multiple times, I'd vote for Daredevil. Somewhat more solid plotted, and it has Colin Farrell as Bullseye.

DD was horrible beyond belief which is so offensive because DD has the potential to be the most dramatic, emotional super-hero movie ever.

HULK was better although it had its share of problems, too.

Daredevil has been bashed a lot, and when I rewatched it, there was a bit of corny acting, but all in all, an entertaining flick.

***1/2

Hulk? Hmmm... I'm not going to say that I didn't like it, but it wasn't great either. It was probably about what I expected. I did fall asleep in it, but I think that lack of sleep contributed to that. The film did have it's merits.

***1/4

Daredevil is vastly overrated.

And it's not really rated that highly by many.

But it's STILL overrated.

Hulk's better.

Daredevil had Colin Farrell. And that's it. But that ain't enough to save that movie.

I don't think that I knew a great deal about Daredevil going into see, having not read the comic.

Critics' opinions aside, I don't think that it was over-rated - I think that it had the right amount of popularity among it's target audience.

It's obviously not up there with the best of them, and almost falls into the "entertaining, but not exactly good" category (if you listen to upbeat movie crticics), which, if I'm not mistaken is obsolete due the fact that movies are for entertainment.

Almost falls into that category, but it has a decent storyline and some great effects (not necessarily SFX) that gives it a thumbs-up from me.

I liked both very much. Daredevil was better in the sense of staying truer to the story. Hulk was better action-wise, plus I liked that little comic strip thing they had going throughout the movie.

That comic strip effect in Hulk was cool.

Deon, why don't you put Rico in your sig? It'd look cool below the top text.

I honestly think that these are the two best of the Marvel movies thus far, but I have to go with Daredevil. 90% of Hulk is really good, but the ending is just bad. That is enough to make the difference.

There was nothing in Hulk that was really bad, but yes, it had a corny ending.

What did you think Spider-man?

I liked both movies a lot, but I'm gonna have to give the slight edge to DD, just because it stayed truer to the comic book, and all those little things and details it had (check the extras on the DVD, you'll see what I mean) made me appreciate it even more. I'm positive it would've been a better movie with all the rumored scenes that got edited. And the Elektra/Bullseye fight, man alive, it's almost panel-for-panel and word-for-word exactly like the comic book. I didn't mind Affleck as DD, although I think he did a better job as Matt Murdock mostly.

The Hulk movie is very well done, but I agree it was kinda slow sometimes, specially the first 30 minutes, and that ending made little to no sense to me. I know they already greenlighted for Hulk 2 but I'll be truly surprised if they actually released it. They need like a 100 zillion to make a decent CGI Hulk so I'm not sure if the studio is willing to do it.

Hulk was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Old School Lou Ferigno Hulk was better. In fact, the movie was so bad, that my dad bought it for $1 at a yard sale...watched it once, then cussed the movie and gave it away.

It was the biggest letdown of that year. Ruined by horrid acting and over the top CGI.

Daredevil was a lot better. It was at least watchable.

I honestly can't compare to the comic books, as I haven't read them - just the film itself, although I've heard that X-Men sucked, and X2 was much better, as the characters started forming, and you got the impression that they were more of a cohesive unit.

I'll give all five films mentioned a thumbs-up, even if they all do have their low points.

What did you think Spider-man?

Spider-Man had a good origin sequence, but once Parker graduates from high school the movie completely falls apart. Goblin never seemed like a real threat, at least on the level of Bullseye, the final fight was really weak, and the bridge sequence with the New Yorkers nearly made me gag. The effects are some of the worst I've seen since the beginning of the CGI Era. People complain about the CGI Hulk alot, but it is much better than the CGI Spider-Man. JK Simmons was fantastic, although criminally underused, and like I said, the first third to half of the film was well done. I am looking forward to Spider-Man 2, and I do find Dr. Octopus to be a more interesting villain than the Goblin. I think a lot of the problem with Spider-Man was that, although it was the part of the movie I liked, the origin took so long that they didn't have enough time left to build up a plot for the second half of the movie, so they just threw together some thing with Goblin wanting Spider-Man to work for him and getting pissed when he chooses not too. The next film should be more focused.

X-Men doesn't hold up at all. Other than Ian McKellan & Ray Park, there is nothing in that film that stands out and it really feels like it is incomplete. X2 was far more polished with lots of great stuff in it, but it doesn't flow well at all. X2 is less than the sum of its parts. It is a good film, but not what its hyped up to be. More Aaron Stanford and less Halle Berry would have helped as well. I'm worried about X3 though. There are only so many things you can add without it getting too convoluted and with fans screaming for Gambit, Beast, Angel, Colossus, Psyclocke, Apocalypse, Sentinels, Sinister, etc., I am worried that Singer will give in and bring these guys in. There isn't enough time in the films to develop the characters properly now, let alone with 10 other characters coming in. And everyone knows (or should) that Wolverine will still get most of the screentime, whether it makes sense storywise or not.

I've never understood the hatred of Daredevil; I liked it more than any of the other Marvel movies I've seen. In fact, I'd rate them as such:

1. Daredevil

2. Spider-Man

3. Hulk

4. X-Men

5. X-Men 2

Actually, none of these films are even close to being the worst comic book movie ever. Anyone else remember Steel? Superman 3 and 4? Supergirl? Dolph Lundgren's Punisher? Any Crow movie other than the first one? Spawn? Those shitty made-for-TV Captain America flicks? The incredibly lame Generation X pilot that never made it to a series? Comic books have a long, long tradition of being adapted into really shitty movies, which has been the rule until recently. Even a boring, badly acted crapfest like The Hulk was way better than 90% of those made more than a few years ago.

1. X2 - It was a good stand alone movie with a great villian which made the movie entertaining in my opinion.

2. Hulk - Disliked the ending but Bana did have a good performance.

3. Spiderman had a good cast of characters from Willum Defoe as the villian to Toby as the superhero.

4. X-men had too many sub plots going on.

Did not see Daredevil.

Heroes

1. Daredevil (Ben Affleck) - Without a doubt the Marvel movie hero that I identified the most with. He tries to be a hero, but never seems to do much good. Even by the ending, he saved his soul, but he's still not very successful in what he does. Yet he keeps fighting anyways. Affleck, like him or not, pulls off Murdock very well and his scenes with Jon Favreau are great.

2. Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) - Probably my favourite X-Man in the comics and cartoons as well. I always found it interesting how the guy who looks like a demon is the most at peace out of everyone.

3. Jean Grey (Famke Jannsen) - Not the greatest performance-wise, but the character has more depth and goes through more than either of her suitors. Most versions of Jean are really annoying, but I like this one.

4. Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) - I always loved Spider-Man as a kid, and I really emphasize with him here as being someone who is not really ready to handle the powers that he has.

5. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) - He kicks ass, but his character is pretty standard. He is actually better in the first film. In the second, everything he does is pretty much the result of the events and people surrounding him.

Villains

1. Magneto (Ian McKellan) - The X-Men movies would be so much worse without him, it is sad to think about it. Aside from the age difference (which they had to change in order to keep him as a Holocaust survivor), his Magneto is tragic and deadly at the same time.

2. Pyro (Aaron Stanford) - Another X-Villain. Stanford perfectly played a character which showed how easy it was for Magneto to gain people for his cause. The scene he shares with McKellan on the Blackbird in X2 is the best in the film. There are subtle things in the performance too. He is the darkside of Iceman.

3. General Thunderbolt Ross (Sam Elliot) - The best character and performance from Hulk. Ross isn't really evil, but does what he believes he has to do to protect people and his own daughter. He sympathizes with Banner, but feels he has no choice but to kill him regardless.

4. Bullseye (Colin Farrell) - An awesome comic character, with plenty of dark humour. Out of all the villains (besides Magneto) he is also the only one that is ever presented as a truly serious threat. The character is in danger of going too over-the-top, but Farrell pulls it off perfectly.

5. William Stryker (Bryan Cox) - The third X2 villain on this list. He is someone who was deeply affected by the actions of others (ie. Jason) and has let it consume him. The human version of Magneto. I just happen to find Magneto more enjoyable, because where Stryker is 100% serious, Magneto can be very mocking and sarcastic at times.

I liked "Hulk" better than "Daredevil", but I enjoyed them both. I thought DD tried to cram too much into one movie. Perhaps it would have been easier to go with a standard "origin - villain fight" formula (see Spider-Man) and save the whole Elektra / Bullseye thing for the sequel.

Slightly off topic... I've never understood the love for "The Crow". I guess I never got what was so interesting about an invincible zombie that gets revenge on the bad guys while angsting about his girl. I don't know. I saw it and I thought "Bleh". It was too dark and gothy for my tastes in general and I feel like the whole Brandon Lee thing got it more attention and love than it deserved.

I'll admit - I liked both (Daredevil and Hulk). I saw Daredevil again on DVD, and I didn't like it as much as at the cinema. Will it go the other way for Hulk?

And yes, The Crow - I think that I'll go and watch that soon.

Deon, obviously that's not your pic, but is that out of a tour book? Hang on. I think that that picture's in the Ruthless Aggression book. Allow me to go and check.

...

Yep, same picture, but we don't see as much.
