Guest Redhawk Report post Posted July 14, 2004 From the 7/12 - 7/19 issue of Sports Illustrated: ...last week [ESPN] announced that from July 26 through July 30, Sportscenter will include in-studio performances from Kid Rock, Alania Morissette and others. "This is the evolution of Sportscenter," says ESPN senior vice president Norby Williamson. "You'll still get highlights and journalism and all of that. But we should also be experimenting and taking risks." The TRL-like segments will be followed in August by "Old School Week," featuring appearances by such anchors of yore as Craig Kilborn and George Grand... Mr. S£im Citrus 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 Good fucking grief! I personally don't really care about any sport but basketball (any level/gender of basketball), and even I have to feel sorry for guys like Anglesault if they're watching this Sportscenter*; they've spent the whole first half-hour talking about the Lakers/Heat trade! * Disclaimer - I don't really feel sorry for guys like Anglesault... EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 ESPN stopped doing Sports Journalism a long time ago. Its sad that they essentially control the sports news market at this point.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 If you want Sports Journalism you have to watch ESPNews and not the basic cable channels of ESPN or the Deuce~ ESPN is now the MTV of sports channels.

They showed a bunch of redneck racecar drivers getting into a fight over something or other. I was able to Tivo through that nonsense.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted July 14, 2004 So Sportscenter is being dumbed down into Cold Pizza type of show?
nogoodnick 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 I love ESPN. But Sportscenter seems to focus too much on rumors and speculation (Kobe, Shaq). Also some segments are pretty dumb. The Budweiser hot seat is cool only if someone with some personality like Warren Sapp is on it. And the Scout shorts were just dumb. PTI is awesome though, I love Tony K and Wilbon. And it doesn't really matter what ESPN does because Fox Sports Net sucks. I Max...

Guest Smues Report post Posted July 16, 2004 This morning everytime the sports ticker thingy showed tonights Braves game it would say "Wright ERA: 2.04 (leads majors". Nice fuckup there. His ERA is like 3.50 and he's no where near the majors lead.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted July 16, 2004 So how long until ESPN doesn't show actual sports anymore? That's at least a competition. How long until ESPN becomes a station to show athletes cribs and to have their own little Real World type show instead of actually showing games?

Guest Redhawk Report post Posted July 16, 2004 So the question is: should ESPN be more like CNN or more like MTV? CNN is regarded as the No. 1 news source on TV, ESPN is seen as the No. 1 sports source, and MTV is seen as the No. 1 music source. On one hand, CNN has stayed true to the "all news, all the time" format; only debate shows like Corssfire and interview shows like Larry King Live break from their 24-hour newscasts. MTV, on the other hand, has all kinds of sitcoms, dramas and other shows that seem only related to music in that they play music during the show. ESPN seems to be struggling with which way they want to go, but it looks like it's leaning toward MTV.

Guest Redhawk Report post Posted July 16, 2004 When big shit like 9/11 or Saddam getting arrested happens, most people I know who have cable go to CNN first (I didn't include CBS/ABC/NBC, because I wanted to compare ESPN to other genre-specific cable networks). kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2004 OK, this got on my nerves. I had on ESPN's 25 most outrageous sports figures for its last 10 picks. They spend more freaking time announcing the people than they do actually talking about them. I mean, Jesus, there was NOTHING on Howard Cossel, and with me being in diapers or in the womb/tubes for most of his career I was hoping for some old sound bites. Can't have that -- we need to hear more of Stu Scott...

Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2004 Want another reason ESPN sucks? How about people naming THEIR KIDS after it? Apocalypse Now: The first ESPN siblings Now, the name Espen is actually a real name (Espen Knutsen from Norway played for the Columbus Blue Jackets), but I'm sure those parents didn't know that. And naming your kid ESPN (in caps no less) really ought to be illegal.
