Guest Choken One Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 I think 13 Going on 30 will be Hit with young girls and the teen market. My Pick for next week 1. 13 going on 30 2. Kill Bill 2 3. Man on Fire 4. Johnson Family Vaction (starting to get that small word of mouth spread) 5. Punisher 6. Scooby Doo 2 7. Ella Enchanted 8. Walking Tall 9. Hellboy 10. Passion of Christ
Vyce Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Ouch. I thought Punisher would do better than that. I thought it'd at least pull in 20 million or so.
2GOLD Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 I think the poor reviews hurt "The Punisher" and I can't understand the poor reviews at all. It's a damn good movie and a perfect franchise starter. I think it would have done better to fall back to next weekend against "Man on Fire" and "13 going on 30" instead of going against Kill Bill V2 like it did. I hope this doesn't hurt the chances of a sequel cause I want to see this become a franchise. However, I think it may have died already.
Guest Choken One Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Please...13 Going On 30 will be a huge hit...Kill Bill is a niche film...while 13/30 has more appealing market overall.
Guest Choken One Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Well that too but It's geared Mainly towards Young Males that covet violence. 13/30 sells to Young Girls, Family...bigger markets and it has that cheesy but fun lighthearted comedy that always does pretty well around this time of the year working for it.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Does anyone else get tired of Choken One acting like an expert on EVERYTHING? Fuck. And Kill Bill will remain on top slot. That 13 going 30 will debut at #4-5.
Guest El Satanico Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Kill Bill is where I expected it to be, but I expected Punisher to do alot better. It seems that audiences are liking Punisher, so hopefully it won't fall too much next week. Calling Kill Bill a niche film isn't an insult, it's just the truth. 13 Going on 30 appeals to a much larger audience.
BlackFlagg Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 I can see Punisher having a good 2nd week as I'm sure alot of people that wanted to see it chose to see Kill Bill first.....and hopefully good word about it will get others who weren't sure about it to check it out.
El Psycho Diablo Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 What niche is that...awesomeness? or the "Quentin Tarantino legion of fanboys" niche?
kkktookmybabyaway Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 *Looks at the Alamo* Hahahahahahahahahahaha...
Youth N Asia Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 11 The Whole Ten Yards $3,715,000/$12,618,000 12 The Prince and Me $3,450,000/$24,423,000 And while it's something I wouldn't see, Johnson Family is doing great considering its screen count. 1,326 screens...that's less than HALF of Hellboy's count
haVoc Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 *Looks at the Alamo* Hahahahahahahahahahaha... Didn't that movie cost 160 million to make? And people have the nerve to say Aflack is a bomb.
Lord of The Curry Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Well that too but It's geared Mainly towards Young Males that covet violence. 13/30 sells to Young Girls, Family...bigger markets and it has that cheesy but fun lighthearted comedy that always does pretty well around this time of the year working for it. Of course it being geared towards people who enjoy good films is impossible, right? Of course not, it's all young males going to see KB2.
Kahran Ramsus Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 *Looks at the Alamo* Hahahahahahahahahahaha... Didn't that movie cost 160 million to make? And people have the nerve to say Aflack is a bomb. The Disney brand name has about as much value as WCW these days, aside from the theme parks. Just look at how horrible the new animated movie did too. Alamo is suprisingly a good movie, but nobody will see it because of the bad buzz surrounding both the film and the company, and because of the stench of Pearl Harbor, a movie many people feared Alamo would be like.
The Fett Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 13/30 sells to Young Girls, Family...bigger markets and it has that cheesy but fun lighthearted comedy that always does pretty well around this time of the year working for it. It's acceptable for the whole family to see but I don't really see it as movie that will be a huge hit for the family. It doesn't look like the type of movie that will make parents go "I got to take my kids to see this". I don't know if it'll be a big hit with young girls either with a 30 year old as the star of the movie. The "Mean Girls" movie that's coming out soon looks more like the type of movie that appeals to young girls than this one.

I don't see "13 going on 30" being the big surprise film but I think it will do well. I think "Man on fire" will do much better since it's Denzel returning to a role very much like "Training Day". I'm going to go see it, that's for sure.
Guest Choken One Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 The last Denzel Movie didn't do so well...
Youth N Asia Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Yeah, Out Of Time didn't clean up. And this one's getting even less promotion.
MrRant Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Alamo wasn't promoted as a Disney film though. So that arguement holds no water. It's just a bad movie that shouldn't have been made.
Vyce Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 I think the poor reviews hurt "The Punisher" and I can't understand the poor reviews at all. It's a damn good movie and a perfect franchise starter. Have reviews really been that bad? The one's I've seen have been somewhat mixed, but the worst review I read had the film at around two stars (out of the standard 4), which isn't great but it's not as if it got totally panned. I've seen a fair share of decent to good reviews of the flick, and the people in the theater when I saw the film seemed to enjoy it. I'd like to see this become a franchise as well. It has greater potential. The "Mean Girls" movie that's coming out soon looks more like the type of movie that appeals to young girls than this one. While I'd never fork over money to see such a film, I must admit that Lindsey Lohan is looking very doable these days. And the film has Lacey Chabert in it as well, who I've wanted to defile for quite some time now.
2GOLD Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 I've seen some reviews that called "The Punisher" the worse movie of the year. I think it's stuck suffering under the Super hero movie banner right now. X2 and Spiderman have set the bar so high that it'll be hard for many comic book films right now.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Next Week: 1. Kill Bill Vol. 2 2. 13 Going On 30 3. Man On Fire 4. Johnson Family Vacation 5. The Punisher BTW, 2GOLD... weren't you the one who said The Prince And Me would make 30 Million opening weekend.
KingPK Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 The "Mean Girls" movie that's coming out soon looks more like the type of movie that appeals to young girls than this one. BROTHER!!! *Does secret handshake* I finally got around to buying Not Another Teen Movie, and that, coupled from what I've seen in the trailers, has finally convinced me to make this statement in full confidence: Yep, I'm gonna say it: Lacey Chabert is hotter than Jennifer Love Hewitt at this point. There, I said it and I won't take it back.
Guest El Satanico Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Well it's best to ignore any review that says "worst movie of the year" about a movie that clearly isn't. Not liking a movie doesn't make it total cinematic trash. No matter how imperfect Punisher may or may not be, it will be much better than whatever the real "worst movie of 2004" happens to be.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 A lot of Punisher comic fanboys seem to have a problem with the film. It apparently isn't even focused on the Punisher character for a pretty good portion of it, just on the wacky neighbor types. But thats just what I've heard second hand. Kill Bill 2 is a somewhat niche market but it is a woman kicking the shit out of a lot of people and other women do tend to enjoy it. I think it has a fairly wide appeal, film critics/buffs tend to like Tarantinos stuff a lot, young males will like violence, women will like the female empowerment and sentimental ending, so yeah, bit more than a niche movie. It's downright pop culture like frankly. 13 Going on 30 may be hurt in the family market via the pg-13 rating. Little girls may wanna see it but overprotective mothers aren't gonna wanna let them.
Mole Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Well that too but It's geared Mainly towards Young Males that covet violence. 13/30 sells to Young Girls, Family...bigger markets and it has that cheesy but fun lighthearted comedy that always does pretty well around this time of the year working for it. Well, I hate to break it to you but "Family" movies aren't big box office movies. They have smaller budgets so they will make more money, but they aren't breaking many records. Here are the top family films and their rank for all time (domestic). The non-cartoons are in bold. 4. ET - $435 million 10. Finding Nemo - $340 million 12. Lion King - $328 million 13. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - $318 million 21. Home Alone - $286 million 23. Shrek - $268 million 24. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - $262 million 25. How the Grinch Stole Christmas - $260 million 27. Monsters Inc. - $256 million 30. Toy Story 2 - $246 million 44. Aladdin - $217 million 49. Back to the Future - $211 million 54. Gone With the Wind - $199 million 57. Toy Story - $192 million 59. Grease - $188 million 61. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - $185 million 77. Ice Age - $176 million 80. Home Alone 2 - $173 million 85. Beauty and the Beast - $171 million 86. Tarzan - $170 million 96. A Bug's Life - $163 million 99. The Sound of Music - $159 million Cartoons are a different kind of family film because they can draw more people. For example, I'll see any Pixar movie because they are all so damn good. But you would never catch me paying to see 13 Going on 30. My point is that I'm not counting cartoons in my calculations, but I put them in the top 100 anyway. Only 10 of the films in the Top 100 are family films, that aren't cartoons. Family films aren't the biggest draws; action movies are. 41 action movies are in the Top 100, which is the majority. Besides, 13 Going on 30 is actually a romantic comedy. There are only 5 romantic comedies that are in the Top 100 and 5 romantic comedies from 101-200. There are 30 action movies from 101-200. Kill Bill Vol. 2 is a action movie. 13 Going on 30 is a romantic comedy. If you go by the numbers, Kill Bill Vol. 2 has a "bigger market" than 13 Going on 30.
Placebo Effect Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 Prince and Me looked fucking terrible. Even a young girl could see that. The trailers for What A Girl Wants (the Amanda Bynes movie with a similar plot, except with a lost father) looked much better, and had a more marketable star. 13 Going on 30 will do pretty well. It actually looks like a half interesting movie, despite the whole BIG connection, and seeming like a pedophile paradise. Mean Girls will do well. Lindsay's last movie, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, had horrible promotion. Mean Girls, however, will likely get better than normal reviews (written by Tina Fey), and has a better campaign.
