Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Out of the following, which is the best or worst All-Star game? Pro Bowl NHL Major League Baseball NBA McDonald's All-American Game (H.S. b-ball) College football (Blue-Gray Game, Senior Bowl, etc.)
LivingLegendGaryColeman 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Pro Bowl is definately the worst, as no one watches it, players back out among other things. It is after the season, so less people care. Best fluxates between basketball and baseball for me, although I've never seen a complete hockey one.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 I think the baseball All-Star game is the best. The core of baseball is the batter/pitcher matchup. Two sets of unfamiliar teams doesn't effect that. So you don't see the problems that a lack of team familiarity brings like you do in the Pro Bowl and other games. When you watch an All-Star game in other sports, you see insane scoring games. An all-star baseball games bears a resemblance to a REAL baseball game. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 I'd say the NFL is the worst, only because there's a greater chance of injury, imo, to the players that are taking part in a meaningless game. Since I don't care about all-star games, or anything of that sort, then I guess I'd go with the high-school one -- let the kids have a good time I say... nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 They're all junk now, because the players are too concerned with getting hurt or looking bad, so they either change the rules (NFL), play no D (NHL and NBA) or take out superstars after a short period of time (MLB). The high school and college ones really don't count, IMHO, because they're more an audition to go to the next level than an all-star game per se. Not too long ago, players actually cared about winning or losing these games (e.g. Pete Rose steamrolling that catcher to score a run; of course, it basically ended that guys career and is one of the reasons players don't try so hard anymore). Hell, there's been fights in the NHL all-star game. Compare that to today's ole style of defense, and it's like an entirely different game.
Kahran Ramsus 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 The MLB All-Star Game is by far the best (and probably the only one I would consider good). And I have no problems with taking the starters out early. I am more interested in seeing everyone play. The Pro Bowl is the worst because it takes place the week after the Super Bowl and by that point both the fans and players don't care anymore.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Has to be the MLB game. It's usually the only one where the guys try and put on a real game. I don't think anything else comes close. The NHL and NBA ones are just players showing off and racking up the points. But it was cool watching Owen Nolen (I think) call the top of the net and put it there. And the pro bowl is a joke. the max 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 The best game is the baseball game. Only now though, since they play harder with the World Series home advantage on the line. The best weekend is NHL though, as the Young Stars game and the Skills Competition are fun to watch every year.
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 Only now though, since they play harder with the World Series home advantage on the line. Beh. They wouldn't shut up about that last season. Kept pushing it as a game that meant something. It's a friggin exhibition, the fans don't care a bit about th world series gimmick.

Anyone else think the NBA should do this too? No, because it's a stupid idea. Players should have cared about beating the other league like they did in the past and managers should have stoped trying putting in all the pitchers for 1 inning. yankovic fan 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2004 I love the pro bowl. I watch all star games for the fun factor, and football has that. Well, that's for me anyway.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 29, 2004 With the advent of free agency, there is no way you're going to make players ever care about the All-Star Game like they once did. Guys like Bill Russell and Jerry West played with the same team their entire careers, with mostly the same guys, so you built more of a loyalty. Now the only loyalty is to the team you're on for the moment (which could switch at any time, as even the best players in the League can be traded) and to yourself. Guys switch teams every few years, even the superstars. So when they get to the All-Star game, they're playing against former teammates and friends. That said, I like the NBA game the most, complete with the All-Star weekend stuff. The worst is the Pro Bowl. The guys whose teams made the playoffs are tired, and the ones who didn't haven't played in a month. Add to that the "dicking-around-in-Hawaii-for-a-week" factor, and no one plays well. phoenixrising 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 Best: NBA All-Star game. I like to see scoring, especially in exhibition games, and the NBA All-Star game does not disappoint. The players seem to understand it's an exhibition and like to show off with dunks, wild three point shots and fast breaks at every opportunity. Worst: NFL Pro Bowl. I don't blame the players for trying not to get hurt, and the timing of the game after the season is bad, because the players will either be rusty from a month or more of inaction, or tired for the Super Bowl teams who had to play nineteen weeks of football. I do not like the rule changes either (no four/five wide sets, no bump and run, no blitz), it turns the game into something a bunch of guys play in the park rather than the NFL's elite playing each other. ant_7000 0 Report post Posted April 30, 2004 Best: I say the NBA because I like the way show off and have fun with it, Players get serious in the last 5 minutes of the game. Worst - Pro Bowl

NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 For some reason, the baseball all-star game still has the "Real game" feeling to me. Even though I know the outcome doesn't matter. Definately the best is baseball. The worst is the probowl.
therealworldschampion 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Best - MLB All-Star Game: More of a real game feeling Worst - NFL Pro Bowl: for the same reasons that are already posted
Lando Griffin 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Pro Bowl is (you guessed it) the worst. I agree with Mike Wilbon, just name the Pro Bowl teams, but forget the game. Let the players go to Hawaii on their own money.
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted May 1, 2004 So this brings me to wonder.. What exactly would make the NFL Pro Bowl better? The timing of it, adding a gimmick ala MLB's All-Star game, what? Idea: Do away with the preseason and let teams scrimmage each other if they want to instead, and place the Pro Bowl in August. That way, you're showing off the league's best players from the season before and you get people excited about the upcoming season. Oh, and for me I like the NBA's All-Star game the best. The NHL one is pretty fun as well.
Slayer 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 Nothing new here. Best - MLB. Worst - NFL. The rest are just kind of there And add me the MLB game winner getting the WS HFA is stupid, but the funny thing I remember were the promo commercials for the AS game, saying "What if Barry Bonds got his last chance at Pac Bell? What if Derek Jeter could get the last at-bat at Yankee stadium?" Then the Yankees get HFA and fail to do jack shit with it
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted May 1, 2004 The amusing thing was that HF advantage was the "solution" to the 2002 All-Star game, which ended in a tie. The only problem is that is doesn't answer the issue of what happens in case of a tie, and in fact makes the problem WORSE.
