Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 ESPN's page two put together a list of sports feats they'd like to see Here and who they predict will accomplish it; including 5 homers in one game (Pujols) and a sub 2:00:00 mile (some Kenyan. I'm not saying that because I can't remember his name, they really said it would just be 'some Kenyan') What sport feats would you like to see, or repeated in the modern era (like batting .400) I'd like to see: - A player go from High School to the NFL and compete in any reasonable manner. (Who knows who'll be the first to do it, or how many failed attempts will litter the road to achieving this goal) -World Series No-Hitter (Kerry Wood) - If the Cubs can get there and Wood has his stuff going I think theres a chance he could sit down 28. Mik 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 Sit down 28? So we'd be seeing of those passed ball strikeouts where the runner still makes it to first? Sweet. Now the Clarett lost his case to get in to the draft I don't think we will EVER see a high school player go straight to the NFL. At least not until I am old and gray, which is about 30-40 years off. Guest Redhawk Report post Posted May 3, 2004 300 yds rushing in a pro game -- Versus a team with a weak run D (Bears, Browns, Raiders, etc.), I could see LaDanian Tomlinson or Jamal Lewis getting 3 bills. 500 yds passing in a pro game -- It has happened before (Norm Van Brocklin, Warren Moon), but with the shorter "dink-and-dunk" passing style so popular now, I can't see it happening any time soon. The guy would have to complete a very high percentage of his passes and have more than a handful of deep balls. If it does happen, it'd be Daunte Culpepper or Marc Bulger. 300 yds receiving in a pro game -- It has also happened before (Flipper Anderson). See above for reasoning. Maybe Randy Moss or Chris Chambers. 10 sacks in one game -- I'm sure Deacon Jones did it a few times (they didn't keep sack stats back then), but the official record in one game is seven (Derrick Thomas). But for today's defenders to get 10? LT couldn't even do it. Maybe some super-fast LB could one day, and that's only if the coach was like "Fuck it, rush the QB on every play." I don't know...Brian Urlacher? Maybe Jevon Kearse if they lined him up at LB for a day. 70 pts in an NBA game -- It would have to be someone shooting for a scoring title on the last day of the season (a la David Robinson). I could see Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant (after he leaves the Lakers) or LeBron James doing it. No one will ever get to 100 again. Average a triple-double for a season -- I don't think this will ever be done again like Oscar Robertson did. I thought Grant Hill could have before he got hurt. Maybe LeBron James could do it. Jason Kidd is a longshot. A boxer retiring undefeated as champion -- Barring serious health issues (like blindness in one eye, can't walk anymore, etc.), boxers hardly ever stay retired if they retired at their peak, so I doubt this will even happen. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted May 3, 2004 World Series No-Hitter (Kerry Wood) Ugh. Especially not this year. I never, ever want to see another World Series no hitter, and I never want to see 57 games.
Gert T 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2004 From the ESPN list: 50 TD passes - I just do not see anybody getting to that number. I know the rule changes helps, but I think defenses are too good, and if the QB passes that much, he better have a quick release like Marino, or he will take a lot of hits. 100% free throw shooting - If anybody can do it, it could be Redick, but I think this is a long shot, that a miss is bound to happen. Man wins Grand Slam in one year - This would be highly unlikely, due to the fact that the surfaces are different. The clay courts tend to favor great basline players while Wimbledon is great for serve-and-volley specialists. If anybody does it, it will almost certainly be a player from a Western European country. 5 HR's in a game - This will not be easy, but most likely from the list. Really it could be many different people. Mike Cameron and Shawn Green aren't exactly Aaron and Ruth so there's plenty of candidates. U.S. Men's team wins World Cup - This could happen, but no way will it happen by 2010, I just don't think they will be that far along. The biggest problem is that with it only being every four years, it isn't like Freddy Adu will get more than 5 chances. A sub 2 hour marathon - This will happen I believe as people are just getting fast with new technologies and methods of training. 57 Game hitting streak - I am doubtful about this because of all the cameras and media attention, along with better relief pitching. A woman winning a PGA tour event - If anybody is going to do it, it will be Wie, but I think it will be tough. .400 - Bonds, because the number of walks take so many possible outs away if he doesn't have to swing at all. It could happen. How about one ESPN doesn't have that I want to see: a horse win the Triple Crown in my lifetime.

The biggest problem is that with it only being every four years, it isn't like Freddy Adu will get more than 5 chances. I don't see the US winning a World Cup for around half a century - so many other nations are so far ahead of the US and as fast as they can catch up learning the game, other nations will always be miles ahead. Only thing on the side of the US is the numbers game - but that hasn't proved fruitful thus far. The best known 'US' player right now was born in Ghana... Lightning Flik 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2004 200 Points in one regular season. Sydney Crosby Ahem... Wayne Gretzkey completed this feat in 1997, when he got 215. So to make it worth wild, Sydney Crosby would have to get 216 for me to notice. However, if he made 200, I'd be impressed. Although, I would like to see an NHL player get 300. Impossible, but to have one player dominate like that would be exciting to see.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 4, 2004 I'm calling bullshit on Eli Manning's getting the 50 TD season. He hasn't proven a damned thing yet. I doubt Bonds will get .400. I could see Ichiro or Pujols doing it well before I see Bonds doing it. Bonds gets thrown out more than anyone's willing to admit for either dogging it or standing and admiring his fly balls for too long.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted May 4, 2004 ? I was referring to the fact that Bonds gets thrown out a lot at first when he could make actually make it for dogging it on the run or because he has to stand around and admire anything that he hits into the air. I'm not saying that because I can't remember his name, they really said it would just be 'some Kenyan') That may be impossible ,in fact, I think it is humanly impossible to run a sub two minute mile, considering the World Record for the 800m which is the half mile is 1:41.11 by Wilson Kipketer of Kenya(1997). For a two minute mile one would have to run 30.00 flat for four laps. A 30 second quarter mile is only about 13 seconds faster than the 400m world record of 43.18 held by Michael Johnson. and btw.... The USA will win a World Cup before 2018.

Al, maybe you can add spelling "Ripken" correctly to that checklist of yours. As for me, I'd like to see another 30-win season. I'd like to see a starter with a sub-2.00 ERA over a full season. I'd like to see a player get 200 points in a season in this era of the NHL. I'd like to see someone (read: JAMAL~!) rush for at least 2200 yards. And I'd like to see another Orioles World Series win before I go blind and die.
