I know you said players, but I can't think Bears and not think Ditka in the next sentence and the same deal with Bobby Knight and Indiana.

You young whippersnappers are showing your age ...

How can you think "Astros" and not think Nolan Ryan? Or Cubs and not think "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks? (hell, I'd put Ryne Sandburg as more associated with the Cubs than Sosa). And a team like the Celtics are like the Yankees or Canadians: too many great players have worn the uniform for one, and only one, to be associated with them.

The only ones that I can think of right now are the new, expansion teams:

Hornets = Larry Johnson

Heat = Alonzo Mourning

Lighting = Vincent Lecavalier (although St Louis might replace him in a year or so)

Wild = Marian Gaborik

Patrick Ewing IS the New York Knicks.

I know some older chaps will say a Willis Reed or a Walt Fraizer, but Ewing=Knicks.

It's weird seeing people associate Roy with the Avs, I still think of him as a Canadien and I'd put him behind Sakic and Forsberg in terms of players I associate with Colorado.

How about Carl Yaztremski and the Red Sox? I mean, he does have the record for most games played with one team.

You can make an argument for AI. Unlike Erving, Iverson has played his entire career in Philly.

Until after this summer (hopefully). It's like the old question and answer,

"Have you lived here all your life?"

"Not yet."

I think that this question has gone a little astray too. There are some teams that don't really have an answer IMO. Like the Lakers, Yankees, Red Sox, Celtics, etc. If a team has a wide range of great players from several different eras, it's hard to say that you associate a single player with that team.

Cubs - Billy Williams*

Was Ernie Banks a close second? And would Harry Carey be third?

Harry Caray is remembered for being a total goof towards the end of his run, but the real voice of the Chicago Cubs was Jack Brickhouse.

Most famous Chicago Cubs:

Jack Brickhouse (WGN announcer)

Billy Williams

Ernie Banks

Ron Santo

Lee Elia (hahaha)

Ryne Sandberg

Sammy Sosa

Bears: Butkus, Sayers, Piccolo, Payton, The Fridge, Singletary, Ditka, McMahon, to name a FEW

Bulls: Jordan, Pippen

Hawks: Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita

Philadelphia: Eric Lindros (sadly)

Most old-time Flyers fans would say Bobby Clarke (hock PTOOEY) or Bernie Parent.

Chicago: Tony Amonte

I don't think he'd even be in my top 5. Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Denis Savard and Jeremy Roenick all come to mind before Amonte.

Toronto: Dave Keon

Either Darryl Sittler or Frank Mahovlich.

Bledsoe associated with the Pats? Maybe 4 years ago, but not now. People probably are still sending Mo Lewis thank you notes for that hit (not because they wanted Drew hurt, of course).

For me:

Celtics: Basketball Jesus (aka to the mortals, Larry Bird)

Red Sox: Ted Williams

Patriots: Tom Brady, although you could also say Belichick (if you want to bend the rules a bit), or John Hannah (the Patriots' only NFL Hall of Famer, I believe).

Bruins: Either Bobby Orr, Cam Neely, or Ray Bourque, I can't decide.

TONY AMONTE???

The Chicago Black Hawks/Blackhawks had Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Keith Magnuson, Stu "I put my picture above my locker so when I forget my name I can still dress myself" Grimson, Glenn Hall, Denis Savard, Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Jeremy Roenick, and the guy that you feel is representative of the organization is Tony Amonte?

By the way, for the Wings...Steve Yzerman of course, but what about Bob Probert?
