Guest thebigjig Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/linkto/mgrind.day.html "As they prepare for Reagan's arrival, some congressional Republicans are pushing the limits of tribute. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist wants to rename the Pentagon the "Ronald Reagan National Defense Building." Rep. Dana Rohrabacher wants to put Reagan's face on the $20 bill, replacing Andrew Jackson. Sen. Mitch McConnell wants to put him on the $10, replacing Alexander Hamilton. Rep. Mark Souder wants to put Reagan on the dime." These conservative fucks are really pushing it here... Jesus Christ, let's just put his fucking face on ALL of the money!
Vyce Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Renaming the Pentagon is a bit much. However, Andrew Jackson was an awful human being, so I got no problem with them putting the Gipper's mug on a 20-spot.
Guest Brian Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I wouldn't mind putting anyone's face on the $20 other than Jackson.
Guest Goodear Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Man with the airport already named for him about ten minutes down the road, I can't imagine re-naming the Pentagon. Its not like Ronnie has like a rest stop named after him and we need to redress the difference.
Guest thebigjig Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Reagan can replace Jackson for all I care... but they're going overboard here and they're going to use his death to try and push every kind of memorial possible through... it's only a matter of time before serious consideration is given again to putting his face on Mount Rushmore... a fucking line needs to be drawn
Hogan Made Wrestling Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I mentioned this in the other thread. This is really one of the stupidest ideas I've heard. "The Pentagon", both in name and in appearance, is one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. Can you imagine how crappy this would make Tom Clancy-type movies? Harrison Ford: GET ME THE PENTAGON! vs. Harrison Ford: GET ME THE RONALD REAGAN NATIONAL DEFENSE BUILDING!
Guest BobbyWhioux Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Let's just go ahead and call it the United States of Reaganica and get it over with.
Guest thebigjig Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Oh well... it's just cheap exploitation and hopefully most people will see it that way
The Czech Republic Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 How about a 75-cent piece? You wouldn't know how often I need 75 cents but don't want to carry three quarters.
Highland Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 What's wrong with Jackson? Anyone that beats the shit out of someone that tries to shoot them fucking owns.
snuffbox Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 What's wrong with Jackson? Anyone that beats the shit out of someone that tries to shoot them fucking owns. He was a bleeding heart liberal.
Guest INXS Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 People getting silly...the introduction of say a $1 coin with Reagans face on it should suffice.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I find it sad that Reagan, a person who always talked about the "big picture," is now the subject of all this petty let's-name-this-after-him...
Spaceman Spiff Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 Man with the airport already named for him about ten minutes down the road, I can't imagine re-naming the Pentagon. Its not like Ronnie has like a rest stop named after him and we need to redress the difference. Doesn't he also have an aircraft carrier named after him, too?
Guest Hero to all Children Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 I am expecting a wave of merchandising to roll over us like a tsunami any second now. Ronald Reagan Memorial Handbags, Ronald Reagan Memorial Money, Ronald Reagan Memorial Monopoly Money, Ronald Reagan Memorial Pill Dispenser, Ronald Reagan Memorial Bible, Ronald Reagan Memorial Maple Syrup, Ronald Reagan Memorial Douche, Ronald Reagan Memorial Beer Jug, Ronald Reagan Memorial .380 Double Action Sidearm, Ronald Reagan Memorial Catnip, Ronald Reagan Memorial Panties, Ronald Reagan Memorial T-Shirt, Ronald Reagan Memorial Knife Set, Ronald Reagan Memorial SUV, Ronald Reagan Memorial COINTELPRO, Ronald Reagan Memorial UNIVERSE. Seriously people. A man has died, an important man who influenced our lives for the better or the worse. We will all most likely remember him as a lovable scamp, a big crook or the best president EVAR. Let him rest in peace and not in our wallets. Though the removal of Jackson is seconded.
Toshiaki Koala Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 As long as we get the William J. Clinton Presidential Residence in return...
Guest MikeSC Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 The ironic thing is that the guy who would most vehemently fight putting his name on all of these things would be...Ronald Reagan. -=Mike

I think it's awesome that he's getting one, but for some reason I am thinking he would've wanted something a little simpler and quieter

I think it's awesome that he's getting one, but for some reason I am thinking he would've wanted something a little simpler and quieter Nope, he wanted a state funeral. Presidents, on the day they leave office, are asked to make funeral arrangements. Everybody but Clinton has done so. This is for his family to remember him --- not for Reagan. Reagan would have wanted whatever would make this a little easier for his beloved family. -=Mike
Jobber of the Week Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Couldn't agree more... do you think he wanted a state funeral? I think it's awesome that he's getting one, but for some reason I am thinking he would've wanted something a little simpler and quieter The sad thing is this funeral, while respectful, will set a trend of Presidents wanting a funeral as lavish as Ronald Reagan's. You know Dubya's thinking "Damnit, I want that!" MikeSC: Everybody but Clinton has done so. Because he was impeached? Or did he simply decline or what?

You know Dubya's thinking "Damnit, I want that!" I doubt that. Most don't have a burning desire to, you know, die. MikeSC: Everybody but Clinton has done so. Because he was impeached? Or did he simply decline or what? He just hasn't turned in any paperwork signifying his funeral arrangements --- he was asked when he left office to do so. I suppose it's because he's younger than most ex-Presidents and feels he has time to do so later. -=Mike

Actually, he was the President who's attitudes and policies towards Native Americans facilitated and allowed for the Trail of Tears, which was tantamount to genocide. Speaking as someone of Cherokee descent, trust me when I say that he's not the sort of guy that Democrats want to hold up as great party icon. He's something of an anti-Lincoln, if you want a point of reference.

He's something of an anti-Lincoln, if you want a point of reference. I think he did more than facilitate it. He outright friggin' ignored the Supreme Court when they ruled against him. Though I'd have a friend that would argue for Jackson b/c of the giant cheesewheel he had.
Styles Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 The Pentagon idea is way overboard but I would have no problem with dropping Jackson and putting Reagan on the 20. Just a much better person to honor. If changing the 20 is too radical, how about the 50? Why is Grant on a fairly commonly used bill anyway? Maybe to honor him as a military leader but as a president he was awful. So, putting Reagan on the 50, or even the 20 has my support. Leave FDR and the dime alone though.

He'll suffer the same fate as Elvis or Attila The Hun. Maybe he'll find a novel, and kinky, way to do both.
Lil' Bitch Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 They can replace Hamilton, he wasn't even a fucking President.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America Posted June 10, 2004 Report Posted June 10, 2004 Hamilton was one of the framers of the Constitution, though. Jackson was a xenophobic, genocidal hick.
