Downhome Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I am SHOCKED! Mary-Kate Olsen seeks treatment for eating disorder Reuters News Service LOS ANGELES - Teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who with her twin sister Ashley has grown into an American pop icon and fashion brand, has entered a program for treatment of an eating disorder reported to be anorexia. The 18-year-old co-star of last month's film New York Minute recently "entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue," publicist Michael Pagnotta said Tuesday. "She is thankful for the encouragement and support of her friends and family, who are with her every step of the way," he added. A person familiar with the situation told Reuters that Olsen was suffering from an eating disorder. Olsen entered a facility during the past week or 10 days and was expected to remain in treatment for about a month, the person said. Us Weekly magazine, in the cover story of its upcoming issue, identified the disorder as anorexia. Speculation about Olsen's rail-thin figure has been the subject of tabloids, gossip columns and the Internet for weeks. The actress herself poked fun at the issue during the twins' recent appearance on Saturday Night Live, shouting to an extra playing herself, "You're too skinny! Eat a sandwich!" Pagnotta said both sisters, who turned 18 on June 13, were going ahead with plans to attend New York University together in the fall. But Ashley Olsen will be making a planned trip later this month to Australia and New Zealand without Mary-Kate to launch overseas promotion of New York Minute -- the sisters' first theatrical feature, he said. The twins have been in the public eye since they were 9 months old, starring in the television sitcom Full House. Since then, they have sold millions of videos, DVDs and books and have launched their own fashion line. But director-producer Michael Kruzan, who has worked with the twins for years, was quoted in Us Weekly as describing Mary-Kate as the "more competitive" of the two girls. Sincerely, ...Downhome...
Art Sandusky Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 WHOA! I hadn't seen many recent pictures of them. Geezus. (calls Ashley instead)
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Never understood anorexia - too many people in this world suffer from not eating enough and have no choice in the matter...

LaParkaYourCar Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Wow....looks like both of them need to be treated.
Youth N Asia Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I don't think anyone is shocked by it. And while I'm not for kicking people while they're down...she's a fucking idiot
Guest netslob Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Never understood anorexia - too many people in this world suffer from not eating enough and have no choice in the matter... "I just can't feel sorry for an anorexic...rich cunt don't want to eat...fuck her. 'I DON'T WANNA EEEAAATTT!!!'...go fuck yourself. Don't eat, I give a fuck. I wonder what they'd call a restaurant for anorexics...'The Empty Plate'...'The Lonesome Chef'...'Start Without Me, Guys'." ---George Carlin. pretty much sums up my stance on the topic.
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 netslob with my favorite post of the day. Time to put that in the sig.
razazteca Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 I do not like this transition of becoming Hilton Sisters.

Guest FrigidSoul Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Wow...she's in pretty bad shape. Also, for those making fun of anorexia you do know its a mental condition right? Your mind actually makes you feel fat and repulsive no matter what along with convincing your body to actually vomit. Its fucking awful, I've met people who have suffered from this.
Youth N Asia Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 This also goes with my theory about which one would turn out better. Mary-Kate...double name, too hillbilly, doomed from the start. While Ashley's are always hot.
Guest netslob Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Mary-Kate...double name, too hillbilly, doomed from the start. "Y'know what i have a problem with? hyphenated names. hey, asshole, pick a fuckin' name, would ya please. women think's a radical statement, it isn't...castrating a man in a parking lot with a broken bottle is a radical statement. Yuna_Firerose Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 Allow me to be the first to say "Ha Ha". Allow me to second that. I could barely stop laughing when I read this. It's just too fuckin' funny! In their movies they're all "Oh, look at us, we're so innocent and pure and sweet and NEVER do anything wrooooong!". Well, I'll bet this brought that image crashing down, doesn't it? Fuckin' bitches needed to be brought down a few pegs.

I don't believe any of that mental shit. I call it being a moron.
Guest Nanks Posted June 22, 2004 Report Posted June 22, 2004 You beat me to it Frigid. I don't know how anybody can laugh at someone for having anorexia. If they'd turned into drug addicts or something like that, then maybe, but you're making fun of someone with a mental condition. It's tantamount to laughing at Michael J Fox or Mohammed Ali for having Parkinson's. Tools.
1234-5678 Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Drug addiction isn't mental, but anorexia is? They're both for the weak, but still, if you're gonna consider one mental, then the other surely is.
Guest Nanks Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 You make a good point, but I couldn't speak for the chain events that lead to either problem. The point I was getting at more is that someone thought it was funny because they generally portray Little Miss Perfect characters who "never do anything wrong", as if developing anorexia was doing something wrong, whereas if one of them turned out to have a $500/week coke habit or something that would be a valid point.
Guest FrigidSoul Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 JAxl, its been medically stated as a mental disorder. I wouldn't steer you wrong. How is a disease that isn't brought on by doing something questionable "wrong"? At least the girl is attracted to men who actually care for women rather than your fetish for queers that wouldn't touch you no matter how large the strap-on you purchase is.
LaParkaYourCar Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Whoa I didn't even notice that Yuna was back. I think the mental part of anorexia is a build up of years of bad self image, which could have it's basis in something else completely...like being in the limelight at such a young age. When you say it's a "mental" thing you're not saying it's some chemical imbalance or genetic. It really is something they allowed to happen over the years by not ignoring what other people think of them. So in a way they could have avoided this. I know the knee jerk reaction is to blame society and TV, but everyone has the power to not listen to those things.
CanadianChick Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I'm not condoning anorexia by any means, but some people just feel the need to be 'perfect' in the eyes of everyone else. I would imagine that would increase 10 fold if you're in the public eye. After she goes to this centre, she should go into therapy.
Nighthawk Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Now now, I came to know anorexia pretty well because of my sexual fetish for it, and it's not funny. I'm about as cruel as they come, but there's just nothing to laugh at here.
Guest Askewniverse Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 FrigidSoul is right. The American Psychological Association (APA) has classified anorexia nervosa as a legitimate mental disorder in the DSM-IV. I don't think it's fair to blame Olsen. As far as I know, there isn't a definitive answer as to what causes anorexia. It could be caused by chemical inbalances in the body, environmental/social factors, or a combination. The Olsen twins achieved fame at a very young age. The stress that comes with fame might be a significant factor in Mary Kate's development of anorexia. Combine the stress from fame with the upcoming transition to college, and you have a recipe for disaster. You also have to take into account the fact that Mary Kate Olsen is a teen. Teenage females are at the greatest risk for developing an eating disorder (average age of onset is 17). Females who are "overachievers" or "perfectionists" have an even higher risk of developing an eating disorder. It wouldn't be entirely out of the question for Mary Kate to be an overachiever. As a celebrity, she might be pushed to strive for perfection, whether it's by her own volition or by someone else. It's good that she's getting help. Anorexia nervosa can lead to other mental disorders if not treated properly. I can understand if you don't like the Olsens. For the record, I'm indifferent towards them. I don't see the big deal that some people make over them. However, I can't understand how people can say things like "Good. Fuckin' bitches deserve it" or "This is so damn funny!" As a psychology major, I don't find mental disorders (such as anorexia) to be funny at all.
Guest Anglesault Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 I'm glad Ashley bleached her hair. It's easier to distinguish.
Guest Anglesault Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 FrigidSoul is right. The American Psychological Association (APA) has classified anorexia nervosa as a legitimate mental disorder in the DSM-IV. Are these the same people that decided a drug addiction was a "disease?"
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 If it's mental, why isn't Ashley suffering from it too? They pretty much have lead the exact same lives I can guess.
Nighthawk Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 That's the dumbest question I've ever heard.
Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Correct me if I'm wrong, but usually twins are VERY close to each other, so I don't see how it's not logical. Plus the fact the only times you see them are together... Edit: To add to this, I'm questioning how one of them has it, and the other being COMPLETELY oblivious. I'm sure anorexia is a noticable disease, and the fact they are always together is more mind boggling that ashley didn't talk to her about it or whatever.
