Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 it's been discussed here numerous times, but i'll once again go on record as to say that it was one of the best fueds of all time, IMO but unfortunantly it didn't have a proper blowoff thanks to the whole Montreal thing, which may be why i wouldn't call it THE best fued ever...now if Austin and Bret both showed up on like TNA or something and renewed their fued, that would kick major buttocks, but im sure that is highly unlikely... Aero 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 First of all, I'll point out that it's FEUD, not fued. But it's definitely my favorite feud of all time. It had two of the greatest WWF matches of all time, if not the greatest. WM 13 match was voted best match in Polls/Lists. As much as I loved Bret, I could never hate Austin, because he was the cool heel. Their WM 13 match is my favorite of all time.
redbaron29 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 Being that that feud was prominent in a very impactive time in my life, I will go on the record to say IMO the greatest of them all. Funny enough, my brother and I were just discussing how the storytelling process was possibly at it's best at that point. Close second would be Austin McMahon. algrim 0 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 That feud was what got me interested in wrestling again. I stopped watching wrestling a little after WM 12.
Guest krazykat72 Report post Posted July 26, 2004 It was a great storyline and prodcued some great matches in a bleak WWF business period. It would have been nice for Austin to get the blowoff victory, but his desctruction of Bret on RAW in 4/97 was good enough and remains one of my favorite wrestling memories. -Paul Jacobi-

Australian Pride 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 It was easily the best one-on-one feud I've seen. Great wrestling, great mike work, a nice heel screw-job (royal rumble) and a perfectly executed double-turn (at and around WM13). Austin did a great job of building this up at a time when Bret wasn't even on TV, and then they followed up with some of the best matches in history. And thank god Shawn Michaels 'lost his smile' because otherwise we wouldnt have gotten the WM13 submission classic.
reign 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 Blow off or no blow off Bret passd the torch that night at Mania and the the WWE took a wrong turn by delagating Austin to the I.C division to fight with Owen although they had little choice with UT, HBK and Bret all in the top spots...it is the best feud in my opinion simply because of how real it was...Bret was the top face and stood for what was good and noble when Austin comes along as the exact opposite and the people began to hate Bret...people may think Austin/Rock was great and it was but it never came close to the feeling of hate that Bret and Austin had between each other...and the double turn at Mania was possibly my favorite match of all time... Guest Ray Report post Posted July 27, 2004 Owen beat Austin at Canadian Stampede, so Ausitn had to get revenge. Austin/Bret was a truly great feud. Bret sinking to Austin's level was wonderful drama. Aside from Mania 13 and Survivor Series 96, they also had a good match at IYH Revenge of Taker 97.
Austin3164life 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 Probably the WWF's greatest feud of all time. That's what happens when Vince lets two of his best workers cut loose. Austin's rise to immortality and Bret's degeneration into heelness is such a great spectacle to watch. You could truly feel some hatred. If the Montreal episode didn't happen, the blowoff was supposed to be Bret vs. Austin at WM 14, in an Iron Man match (read the plans for Bret after SS in one of his articles)! Bret was supposed to beat Shawn at RR 98, Austin would win the Rumble, and at the Feb ppv, Bret was supposed to put his career on the line, but only lose by DQ (I believe), and then the Austin/Hart feud would resume, to conclude at WM 14 when Bret passes the torch. Guest krazykat72 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 Actually according to Meltzer's article, linked on Bret Hart.com after Survivor Series(where he would lose to Michaels, Bret would lose in Springfield on the 12/7 PPV to Shawn he would then lose to Shawn at the Rumble he would then beat Shawn on RAW the next night to win the title back and then lose to Austin at 'Mania 14 It's believed that this plan was orchestrated in a way for Bret to "stay" while encouraging him to leave. It's a really good read. -Paul Jacobi-
Crimson G 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2004 I remember the RAW magazine that came out after the WM13 match was sooo graphic (with Austin's face all covered in blood) that they couldn't allow you to buy it without parent permission (or if you were over 18, of course). But then they hyped this on TV, including showing the magazine cover.

It's always bugged me that I've never seen it. I need to see this match too. Austin/Bret....I totally bought the hatred shown by these two (was just a stupid mark, back then), it's evident in their eyes, words and actions. Very enjoyable moment in wrestling, for me. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted July 28, 2004 i have that match on tape, it wasn't GREAT like the SS 96 match and the WM13 match but it continued to sell the angle well...if i recall, both men were hampered big time with leg injuries so they weren't able to provide the best match possible at the time but at least made it very watchable... Guest Ray Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Yeah, it is clearly a step below their previous two matches, but it's still very good. I loved the way Austin was fired up at the start, and the way Bret kept going back to Austin's injured knee. And the knee brace/sharpshooter spot was awesome. There was a Raw magzine cover (May/June 1997) with Vader covered blood from In Your House: Final Four but not a Stone Cold Steve Austin one.
