New Avengers Lineup Announced

Recommended Posts

So the new lineup will be:

Captain America

Iron Man

Wolverine

Spider-Man

Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman)

Sentry

and a mystery person

I don't think I really like the new lineup. Spider-Man has never been a team player and Wolverine doesn't fit in with the PR friendly image. I'm indifferent to Drew and Sentry. Why can Wolverine be in 3 million team books but fucking Beast can't have another stint on the Avengers?

I won't mind Wolverine's membership, but only if he's relinquishing his X-Men duties. He would propably be the biggest "loose cannon" in any super hero team ever, especially with the Avengers goodie reputation on Marvel earth. Taking in a really twisted, violent mutant in really shakes up the status quo.

Cap and Iron Man I really don't mind, as they are the usual. Spidey is an interesting choice, but doesn't make sense. I do like Jessica Drew being added, but I hope that doesn' mean that Alias and the Pulse is cancelled. But two Spider-powered members on the same team is a litle questionable.

Sentry is a very interesting character, being that he's one of the most powerful members of the Marvel Universe, but very reclusive and having low self esteem.

It is a very odd line up, especially since Marvel said that they wanted the Avenges to be more like the JLA in DC...the A-list heroes. They are in a sense with Spidey, Wolv, Cap, and IM, but then it drops down to C-listers.

Jessica Drew isn't Alias. Jessica Jones is Alias. Though technically Jones is a rip-off of Drew because Bendis originally wanted to make Drew be Alias but had to create a bastardized version of Drew in order to get Marvel to let him make Alias be a mature audience book (since Marvel didn't want one of their existing characters being revealed to like taking it up the ass).

That being said, the fact that Cage is on the line-up is clue enough that Bendis's Anal Sex loving Mary Sue will be a major part of the book. It's the only reason Cage is on the team.....

I'm thinking Wolvie and Spidey will only be there for a few issues, and then realize it isn't working for them, and be gone. At least, I hope that's what happens, since neither is suited to a book like this, and both are overexposed as it is.

Personally, I'm alot more interested in Brubaker doing Cap, and Ellis doing Iron Man. Both should be pretty good, considering the writers.

I'm so confused. I never knew that Jones and Drew were seperate. Luke Cage is on the team, too?

I had heard that Luke Cage was going to be on there but didn't see him listed in the article above.

And what's up with Wolverine on the team. I had heard for years that the higher ups wouldn't let Beast be used because he was in the X-Books. So why are they putting Wolverine in his 4th team book? Is he teaching at Xaviers, doing X-stuff and being an Avenger all at the same time while still doing his solo stuff?

Spider-Man, at least, IS an Avenger.

And since Wolverine = $$$ he's Marvel's bicycle.

I've said on the Nexus that Cage isn't needed as long as Rage is a reservist. He's more interesting anyways.

This lineup is ass.

Man - after winning me over a few years back with the whole Marvel Knights concept, Marvel is really trying hard to make me - and probably lots of comic fans - hate them again.

It's working so far!

To be fair, Spidey's been a reserve Avenger for a while now. He may not always enjoy the team thing, but if there were a situation where Peter saw that he was neccessary, I think he'd stick it out.

Wolverine is another book? Sheesh, what's next? Wolverine joining the Power Pack?

I don't get this, first Marvel tries to make the Avengers a marvel superstar team by killing off the crappier or lesser known members, but then decide to put in people like Spider-woman and Luke Cage? Kind of defeats the purpose on why they're doing this whole disassembled thing. You'd think they would try and pimp Daredevil in there.

I was about to say I would think Daredevil would appreciate being an Avenger. By the way, what ever happened to the Vision(he was a cool character) and at any point did any member of the Fantastic Four join the Avengers? One other thing, since they seem to offer emembership to just about everyone, did they ever try to get Punisher to join? I mean, they once tried to get the Hulk for God's sake.

Hulk was in the Avengers. A founding member in fact, along with Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and Ant Man.

I don't think Daredevil would work. In the Marvel Universe he's a fairly small timer and rarely comes out of Hell's Kitchen to fight crime.

To answer your question, MOM, everybody but the Human Torch has been a member of the Avengers. The Thing was a part-time member in the West Coast Avengers while reed and Sue were members from Avengers(vol. 1) 300-303. As for the Vision, if you've read Avengers #500, you know what happened to him. :(

This line-up reeks of the New Defenders. Bendis pussed out in the grand scheme of things and missed his Scourge quota for killing folks off. This line-up looks dumb since half the team is composed of loner's (Spidey and Wolvie) and people fans have never cared about (Spider-Woman in any incarnation and Marvel's "SURPRISE GOTCHA~!" character Sentry).

Since Bendis' Avengers is all but dead on arrival, who do you think will next get the task of making the Avengers cool?

Busiek. Again.

I don't think he'd want it, but give Waid a shot.

I'd like to see Waid writing Avengers, but it's really unlikely at this time. I do see them letting him have a shot once Quesada gets canned.

What about JMS? He'll need something to do once he gets bored of Dr. Strange...which EVERYONE does.

As much as I am a fan of JMS, he'd be all wrong for Avengers. All wrong.

What if the Avengers were stuck on a space station with the Kree, Shi'ar and Skrulls? Call me crazy, but I think JMS could work with that :)

btw Supreme Power #12 is really good. What's bad is that I want to switch to TPB, but I don't know if I can wait the 7 months for #13-18...

Patience, little grasshopper, patience...

BTW, I still have my Avengers #500 sitting there waiting to be read, but with all the shit being reported I've still to muster the strenght to pick it up.

Busiek. Again.

Alternatively, Fabian Nicieza or Keith Giffen/DeMatthies/McGuire (AKA the guys behing the late 80s JLA and the "Formerly Known As Justice League" mini).

Hell, Tom DeFalco would be a good choice.

As for major no-nos:

JMS: He's wrecked Spiderman with his obsession to make Spidey a magic character and the current God-Awful Gwen Stacy had twins storyline. Keep him away from the Avengers.

Mark Waid: Again, keep him away unless Waid agrees to work with an editor who will keep his egotism to a minimum....
