If the A's hang on in the West I now actively hope the Red Sox win the East so the A's don't get them in the ALDS. The A's are starting to suck ass. Out with Moneyball, in with some winning ball. You wanted to watch them just because you knew you'd be in for a treat. It's the little things that make the difference, too. On that groundball from Bellhorn that should've been two, you saw Damon haul ass just to break it up. By putting forth a little more effort, the Sox got another run. Justin Miller's only given up 1 hit and faced only 2 over the minimum into the 7th, but the Jays are only up 1-0 on a run on off a 1st inning Delgado double that only happened since no one in the outfield picked the ball up and Adam Kennedy couldn't come up with it. The A's did look like the better team last year in the regular season, between them and the Red Sox, and look what happened in the playoffs, so that just goes to show that if they happen to meet this year it could be a reverse of.........eh who am I kidding......ugh. Couldn't they have found someone a little better than Kruk? At least Harold Reynolds isn't a complete fool and he's a good TV personality to boot. I see little redeeming value in John Kruk at all. I certainly hope that this keeps up, so that Dusty Baker gets canned for betting the house (and the careers of his young pitching staff) on reaching the playoffs the last two years. I'd imagine that Moises is gone after this year, despite being the team's anchor earlier in the year. Even though Sosa's got another year to go, they have to find a way to get rid of him. I seem to recall him saying that once the fans let him know it was time to go, he'd go. Well, I'd say the Wrigley faithful booing you on a regular basis qualifies. "By gawd, Sosa's only got a couple of years left, we've got to strike now!", cried the desperate fandom (and, apparently, upper management), deciding not to realize the possibilities that: A) Sosa wasn't going to hit 50 HRs a year for the rest of his career B) Their young pitching, if properly managed, could keep them in contention for the rest of the decade (Exhibit A: the Oakland Athletics) If they had just been patient, the Cubs could have had filet mignon for the next five years on that pitching staff alone, but the franchise was so hungry to dispel this ridiculous curse that they absolutely had to gorge on candy bar after candy bar as though they'd never be able to eat again, without thinking of future digestive consequences. ... Now it's clear that if they hadn't messed with their rotation and added some more potent bats they were able to get without Sosa's huge contract, their chances would've been better. I don't understand this, though, since he was god-awful the one year they didn make it to the postseason and he was just okay last year. Even if he's got another year on his contract, I'd still like to see him walk away with some semblence of dignity left. If he sticks around for another year, it's not going to happen. Like him or not, this is certainly tough to watch the guy go from being a sports icon to a true shell of his former self. But whatever, ya know. Sosa and Alou are deemed leaders of the club when they've become more like cancers. Dusty and his idiot crew of coaches will continue to make stupid decisions and then find a way to put a positive spin on it. But above all else, we know who's really to blame. Chip and Steve. It's scary though how often we're getting to hear, "Well, that's a dandy piece of baserunning," these days. But what do you expect when you've got Dusty and Sarge leading the ship? Actually, I'm not sure if you got it - let me clarify that a little bit: Having Sammy Sosa on your team gives you a better chance at a title - after all, they could be starting Tom Goodwin out there - but I think that his legacy as a Cub may have actually affected the Cubs' managerial philosophy in a way that will prove to be detrimental to the health and future of the ballclub.
