Many are figuring he's got the record hands down, but he's been slumping a lot lately. I think he'll do it, but not until the last week of the season. Still not complaining--first player ever with 200 hits in each of his first four seasons in the league, and of course the forthcoming (early 05) honor of quickest to 1,000. He won't get the pitches if the M's have runners on (of course you wouldn't know that mattered from THIS series), do Oakland or Anaheim want the honor of struggling with the fucking Mariners? Looking his stats, he has a great average, and alot of hits most which are singles. Gammons posted Sisler's 1920 numbers and they blow Ichiro's away. Ichiro's career batting average is .338, while George Sisler's was .340. But Sisler did it while the league average was .295, while Ichiro has done it while the career average was .260. Sisler hit for power in 1920, but that power dissapated quickly after he turned 30. Ichiro is a better basestealer, and a better fielder. And here is a short list of players who have better career OBPs than George Sisler. Nice nice work. The worst was during the game for the Brewers, when they'd go to break and show you who was due up, it would look something like this. Going to the bottom of the inning when the Brewers were up: DUE UP: 8 Ginter 9 Santos 1 Podsednik But when San Francisco was up and the #4 spot was due up... DUE UP: BONDS Jesus H. Christ. I was joking with one of my friends that they'd probably cut away, mid-game, to show each of Bonds' at-bats. And, mid-way through the conversation it dawned on me: I wasn't really joking. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if they'd done that. Sorry, that was way off-topic. I don't think that Ichiro will be able to do it, unless Texas falls WAY out of the race and thus doesn't really care about winning each game. Total combined times I've checked a Mariners boxscore in my life before this: 0 Total times after this season: (Probably) 0 I really really hope he does it. One, because he is my favorite player and two because I own a lot of things that would shoot up in price if he did it! Although I think that's an inattainable goal. I couldn't even begin to imagine the hype something like 800, 900, or God forbid 1000 HRs would generate on ESPN. He's not even passing anyone like he did when he hit 661 and passed Mays. I could care less if he hits #700...wake me up after 15 more and he passes Ruth.
