Dr Dre attacked at Vibe Awards

Recommended Posts

MTV News

The second annual Vibe Awards, an evening meant to honor hip-hop and R&B, was disrupted by a melee Monday night (November 15).

Reports are sketchy, but according to eyewitnesses, as Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were getting ready to present Dr. Dre with the Vibe Legend Award, Dre was attacked near the stage. Witnesses said Dre was standing next to his wife when the man approached in a friendly manner, and then all of a sudden began throwing punches at the rapper/producer's head.

When bodyguards and people with the G-Unit jumped in to protect Dre, things quickly got out of control. While there were some reports that a man with the G-Unit's entourage was stabbed, a spokesperson for the group had no comment on the matter.

After the dust settled at least 10 minutes later, the show went on. Dre picked up his award and told the crowd he wouldn't let incidents like that one slow him down. Later, the audience at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, was treated to a performance of "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop with Pharrell Williams. Jadakiss also performed and was joined by Anthony Hamilton and Common.

The Vibe Awards are scheduled to air Tuesday at 8 p.m. on UPN.

According to another source Suge Knight was also causing some trouble at the show getting onstage and yelling "fuck G Unit" and other insults.

Do these hip hop "beefs" ever remind people of six year old kids, "My Dads bigger than your dad", "Well my dad has a better car than your dad"

There's now conflicting reports to whether Suge was there or not, but if he was there, shame on Vibe's part for inviting him with Dre, Snoop, and many others in the crowd.

Anyways seems like everything went back to normal and Dre got his props like he deserved.

The guy who attacked him should have yelled "Yo Dre. You really shoulda known by now, Eazy does it" before he clocked him. That would have been gold.

Suge Knight honestly amazes me. He does nothing in the music business whatsoever nowadays except start fights and talk shit on people when he's on TV.

Well, it'll be interesting to see who finally will just kill the fucker.

How about teenagers?

They're certainly no strangers to ego-wars and the resulting violence thereof

Suge HAD to be behind this, because he has a track record of starting shit at award shows, From the Source awards ten years ago, to the BET awards, and now this shit. I know Quincy Jones knows better than to invite Suge, whats the purpose of Suge being there but to start shit, he doesn't have any new material from artists of his to promote anything. Another black eye for Hip Hop and the black community because this type shit prepuates stereotypes that are going on in the mainstream media towards blacks. Grown rich men acting like that is silly.

SANTA MONICA, California — The Santa Monica Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of G-Unit rapper Young Buck on Tuesday (November 16) in connection with the melee at Monday's Vibe Awards.

After reviewing a

videotape of the fight, investigators believe Buck (born David Darnell Brown) stabbed 26-year-old Los Angeles native Jimmy James Johnson after Johnson assaulted Dr. Dre during the ceremony at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport hangar (see "Dr. Dre Attacked, Man Stabbed During Melee At Vibe Awards").

Buck, who will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, was one of three men seen on the videotape with knives. The other two have not been identified.

"Mr. Brown is seen lunging over another male and swinging the knife at Mr. Johnson's upper body while Johnson is looking away from him," Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson J.T. Butts Jr. said at a press conference Tuesday (November 16). "He is clearly depicted holding the knife after the assault and was a number of fight participants sprayed by pepper spray. Brown then fled the scene and was not identified until earlier this morning. ... We are asking Mr. Brown to surrender himself to the Santa Monica Police Department immediately."

The encounter began around 7:25 p.m., when Johnson approached Dr. Dre for an autograph and began punching him several times.

"As private security persons attempted to control Mr. Johnson, several males attempted to assault him," Butts said. "Two uniformed officers attempted to intervene and they themselves became victims when unidentified men threw chairs at them."

James was stabbed in the chest and suffered a collapsed lung. He was rushed to a local hospital and is in stable condition, Butts said.

James, who is on parole, has not yet been interviewed, nor has Dr. Dre. "We have a call in to him, he has not responded, but we will interview him at his earliest convenience," Butts said. "This investigation is continuing and we are in the process of identifying several other assault suspects. We have a lot of people to interview."

Butts said he has no idea what sparked the assault and made no connection between Johnson and Suge Knight, a longtime Dre rival who attended the awards.

Initially only two officers intervened, but Butts said 56 officers were on the scene within minutes, including more than 30 who were patrolling the Vibe Awards. l detectors were used at the doors, Butts said.

Young Buck has several arrests in Nashville on his record for minor offenses, Butts said. A spokesperson for the G-Unit had no comment.

Yo, well its good to see G-Unit come to Dre's aid but, this is perfect example of "When keepin it real goes wrong"

Does anyone else find it odd that while Vibe's spokesperson claims there were metal detectors present at the doors, that supposedly as many as three knifes were pulled in the melee of it all? ;)

Suge had no business being there, as stated before. They invited him, knowing something would go down. I doubt they intended it to be something of this calibre, however.

It's terrible how they manipulate the artists for their own profit. They still don't realise they're playing with people's lives.

I wasn't getting at the violence of the attack more the pathetic things these rappers fight over.

Maybe you should think about these things before you type them.

I suppose you'll call me gay for this.

Holy shit did that give me a flashback.

After punching Dre he should have said to the crowd "Nobody move, nobody gets hurt..."

How Suge Knight still gets his face on TV for anything other then that he once had Vanilla Ice hung outside a window by his ankles amazes me.

Rap is such a joke now.Thank god for underground.

Suge won on all counts...flawless victory.

1) Ruined Dr. Dre's special night by having some nobody sock him in the face and causing an uproar.

2) Caused platinum artist Young Buck to face extended prison time.

3) Caused multi-platinum artist 50 Cent to get arrested.

4) For the price of his admission, he's getting thousands of dollars of publicity with his name on blast just in time for ...

5) His appearance on Xxtra or whatever that show is this friday.

Suge siphoned heat off G-unit and brought them down to his level.

Did you see Suge's interview where he says: "People should move on, and forget about (Feuds) that were in past." I starting laughing because anytime interviewer in the rap magazines mentions anybody in Shady/Aftermath or Snoop, Suge is quick to diss them.

The sad thing is that there are people who probably will respect Young Buck more now that this has happened.

^ Yeah on rap message boards, 15 year olds talking about how G-Unit is gangsta now. Eventhough about 20-30 people jump on the guy and Buck shanks him, now he's gangsta. Jimmy Iovine is proably thinking that its gonna to increase G-Unit (minus 50) sales because they're gangsta.

well considering "gangstas" never can do their shit one on one all by their lonesomes, you can't get anymore gangsta than that...

also ant, I slightly disagree on your take about this incident hurting black people as a whole...it hurts the rap/hip hop world, sure, but I don't think anyone other than the racists are gonna sit back and say "those fucking black people, they're at it again"...
