2GOLD Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Then another fan hits Artest, who is being held, in the face. Jackson defends the defenseless Artest since he's being held. Then Artest gets punched in the damn head, twice by a "fan" It wasn't until one steps on the court that Ron Artest throws a punch. Up until then, he does NOTHING that should warrant a fine or suspension. Gotta disagree, especially about Stephen Jackson, he ran right by Artest to punch someone. Watch it again. A fan throws a drink RIGHT into the face of Artest, THEN Jackson starts swinging. Remember, I'm being forced to watch this tonight. Over and over and over again. I've watched on repeat for the last...god how knows long now. And Rant, I gotta disagree. The rules should not be there to punish the players for defending against assault. Artest did nothing but subdue the guy, that is all he does. I cannot believe he is going to be punished for basically arresting his attacker. Obviously he will be because it is a rule, but that rule should not be there in a situation like this.
GreatWhiteNope Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 No fan deserves any money from this insane situation, it was the fans fault to begin with so they don't deserve anything. I'm sure that 60+ year old woman that ended up on her back would disagree.

I also love John Saunders, but he is being a little too preachy for me.
Conspiracy_Victim Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 All I've got to say is that the chunky guy who went after Artest on the floor and got nailed by Artest, jumped on by someone in a suit, then absolutely DECKED by O'Neal was both horrible and hilarious. That dude looked like he wanted to go after Artest from behind and got caught and didn't know what to do. Always remember, drunk basketball fan: if you're going to start a fight with a player, try to get inside and negate his reach advantage!
iliketurtles Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I've never seen Sportscenter cover a story this long.
GreatWhiteNope Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 This Sportscenter episode should get an emmy or something - great stuff.

He was defending a helpless man. He should be fined though. But Artest deserves nothing and that is my stance. He does nothing, he even tried to grab Jackson and stop him. Ron Artest does nothing wrong, nothing at all. That is my only stance. The only one who should be punished is Jackson and perhaps Tinsley. Artest should not receive punishment.

2GOLD Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Tinsley + Dustpan > You Tinsley is my hero for attacking with a dustpan. I expected him to go back into the locker room and return with a ball pin full of weapons and "Natural Born Killaz" to kick on.
starvenger Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Thoughts - Is it wrong for me to think that the Detroiters miss hockey more than they've let on? - Props to Rasheed for going into the stands and trying to protect his fellow players. - Artest throws a pretty vicious right hand. - I feel sorry for any innocent bystanders that got caught in the middle. - Yes, the fan started it, but it doesn't give you the right to charge into the stands after the guy. - This is the first time I've ever seen Screamin A Smith talk at a normal volume. - I hope Bill Davidson has the hockey setup from when the Vipers were at the Palace, because I'd put those up and stick everyone behind the glass next Pacers-Pistons game
Cuban Linx Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Finally got to see the replays with Sportscenter coming on here. Alot of fans should be in trouble over this, the guy that tossed the first bottle at Artest, the at least two guys who came from behind to attack Artest and Jones in the crowd, the one or two guys that ended up on the court, whoever sent the chair flying, and probably a lot more in the whole mess, even without the crowd at the Pacers entrance dumping all sorts of crap on them.

Gert T Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Hey I'm not saying it was assault, and in that situation I probably do react the same way, but the fact that Jackson was ready to fight any Piston does not help his case in my opinion that he was just trying to help Artest.

He was going after fans that were trying to attack Artest. Simple.

Actually, after watching for my...hell, I've lost count...Jackson went into the stands to stop Ron. When Ron gets hit while being restrainted, then Jackson just goes off. This is 100%, without a shadow of ANY doubt, the fault of the fans AND the fault of the secruity in Detriot. They didn't even MOVE towards the fan till Artest did. They seemed more than happy to just let it go. Also, ESPN has already went with the pussy "think of the children" approach? God, took them all of what? 40 minutes?
Cuban Linx Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Looking at another replay Stephen Jackson just hammers a guy in the melee in the stands, almost on the level of the O'Neal slide punch. Most sports brawls seem to have guys throwing a hundred punches but not hitting anything, there were some real good ones landing in this.
muzz Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I like how the fight was reported on my local news station here in Adelaide, but as a quirky and amusing story. "Ho ho, those are some big guys throwing punches!" "You're telling me!"
Gert T Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Were those 6 guys all punching Artest or trying to restrain him? I guess that is the gray area for the league and the police. I have no problem disagreeing on Jackson's role, but I am unanimous with everybody else that the fat man who went after Freddie Jones needs to go to jail. Freddie looked like the calmest person in the crowd.
Guest Smues Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 ESPN2 right now is replaying the whole game. Too bad the rest of the game was pretty dull.
alfdogg Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Artest and Jackson were the only guys that actually went into the crowd *after* fans...everyone else was trying to stop it and then were attacked.
Guest Posada20 Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Most entertaining thing ever in crappy Basketball. Artest is a disgrace.
Guest Brian Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I'm trying to find some kind of common moral ground between this and the Rangers bullpen incident, but the role of the fans is totally throwing off my judgment for now.
Ced Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I just got home and this was the first thing I saw. Damn it's just unreal to watch tempers absolutely melt down. I found humor in the guy that threw the drink at Ron Artest as he was lounging. His expression goes from "Yeah, how you like that, bitch?" to "Oh shit, Ron's gonna kill me" the moment Artest got in striking range. Obviously there will be stiff fines and suspensions, especially for Artest. Though I don't necessarily support what he did in reaction, Artest had every right to be angry at that fan. I'd never expect somebody I didn't know to take me throwing a drink at them lightly.
Guest Brian Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 That's about the most vicious sports fight I can remember.
