So I found a stash of great albums in the closet at my house the other day. They're my aunt and uncle's from way back in the day. I found The Wall as well as Ummagumma, not to mention Bitches Brew. There's a bunch of King Crimson in there, some Taj Mahal, Elvis Costello, Beatles, Echo and the Bunnymen, Leo Kottke, the list just goes on.

 

I've stumbled upon a musical fucking goldmine. Musically speaking, life is good right now.

Well, I'm not him, but here's what I think: unless you want to compare pop to pop, it's apples and oranges anyway, and "Cry Me A River" (and "Rock Your Body", for that matter) is a better pop song than many of those songs are of their respective genre.

These are better than "Rock Your Body," which is not to say I don't like 70% of the stuff on your mix. "To Be Young" is the one Ryan Adams song I sort of like. I don't know the Dead Milkmen song, so I left it on there rather than kill it. I love Interpol, but "Slow Hands" is no "Rock Your Body." "Evil," sure. Same for Elvis Costello; "Blame it on Cain" ain't bad, but it's in the lower tier of My Aim Is True. "Handsome Devil" is a good but not great Smiths song.

 

I heard the new Ashanti song today and I was reminded that, moreso than anyone else, I think, she says her own name at the beginning of every song. I kind of wish David Byrne had done that while he was in the Talking Heads.

Half of Xtina's Stripped is her saying how she's the cat's pajamas and if you say she's not it doesn't matter because she's better than you and your words make her even better than that.

But then, nobody was saying much before she went into Stripped mode anyway, so I wonder if it was like rain on your wedding day or if it was a conscious preemptive strike. Truth is, it's really a pretty sharp album, a better version of what Pink tried to do with M!ssundaztood. The album still gets beat up because her image is unpopular and her persona unnaceptable to some... which is again, exactly what she said on the album. One of the larger cases of "Shut up, you pretentious baby. Wait a minute... she's right." since Marilyn Manson. I'm not sure how much was by design, but Stripped is one of the more avant-garde pop albums I've seen.

I find that when I listen to "World at Large" by Modest Mouse I can sing along word for word, but I can only remember the first couple lines and then it's like "hmm hmm hmm something about moths...hmm hmm" then I remember the last couple lines

after listening to it probably 4 times in 2 days, i recant my opinion of 'kid A'. it's not 'ok computer', but it's good stuff, and i now like it better than 'amnesiac'. seems way more assured than it did before, with lots of solid moments.

 

"everything in its right place" is still an essentially perfect song.

 

even though i don't think the title cut or "the national anthem" are particularly good songs, the 1-2-3 punch of mashing them together with "everything in its right place" makes it dynamic enough for me not to mind.

 

"how to disappear completely" keeps the cool dynamics going, and stands on its own as a song quite well. and i kind of like "treefingers" now.

 

"optimistic" seems a pretty weak song, and an especially weak choice for their most "song-oriented" production on the record, but the crunchy sound is cool and gives another cool dynamic shift.

 

"in limbo" is just blah.

 

"idioteque" and "morning bell" make a good 1-2 punch, and "morning bell" particularly is just fucking creepy.

 

"motion picture soundtrack" is bitchin, except for the harp & the backup vocalists, which remind me too much of 'let it be'. i know it's supposed to be excessive and syrupy, but the harp in general as an instrument really bugs me. still a really good song, & a great closer.
