In other news, I think I might be getting into hip hop again. Cannibal Ox's "Iron Galaxy" came up on shuffle the other day, which inspired me to put on The Cold Vein for the first time in a very long while, which, in turn, reminded me of how great it is.

Edwin - While they showed them at their lowest, didn't you think all of their stories of overcoming the despair and becoming happy were a little far-fetched? How did Julianne Moore end up on top? Ditto with Heather Graham, and the limo scene had no place in the movie, where they beat the shit out of that guy. They didn't really build on it, or have any of the characters evolve from that scene. I also really liked everything up to the New Year's eve party, but I thought the movie went downhill from there for the most part, save for a few funny spots.

Since this is one of my favorite movies, I'll jump in...

 

The downward spiral many of the key characters experience isn't all that far-fetched when you consider the business they're a part of of. Remember, Dirk's based on John Holmes, who DID have drug problems that affected his work. He did become difficult to work with and eventually, began prostituting himself. The failed robbery near the end's based on the Wonderland Murders.

 

As for the limo scene, it captured how much the business had changed and how Jack had been left behind by refusing to change with it. In the span of a few years, he'd gone from having dreams of his pictures being considered legitimate film to watching the business become a video-dominated industry with no concern for cinematic quality. The lime sequence illustrates a defeated Jack trying to be a innovator in a business he has reluctantly agreed to change with.

 

I've always viewed the '70s as the honeymoon portion of the film, with the '80s kicking in harsh reality. As an aside, the transition from from decade-to-decade's tremendous.

 

Superstar, the bells used during those sequences are used as the opening music for P.T. Anderson's Hard Eight, another great film from one of my favorite directors. Like Boogie Nights, it helps create the perfect atmosphere.

When I said build on the limo scene, I meant afterwards. I understand how they got to that point, and how far Reynolds' character had fallen at that time, but afterwards it's like everything became happy again.

Windham Hell's South Facing Epitaph is the most fucked up thing I've listened to in a long while. .Interpols Antics is a better album than Turn Off The Brightr Lights, IMO. The songwriting's better, and the album as a whole just sounds more focused. Also, "Song Seven" (that's the name of the song) is awesome.

 

.The new album from Pzychobitch (they are an electro/EBM (aka "industrial dance)act) is cool. Fun electro with some dark bits, and even German vocals. Plus, the frontwoman is really fucking hot. Basically, it's Goldfrapp's Supernature , only darker and sleazier. Milky (get well soon) would probably like it.

 

.Peeping Tom (Mike Patton's new project) is awesome. I can't quit listening to it.

I have a question about "The Summer of 69" music video. I remember watching it in my youth and the end of the video Mark Metcalf who starred in the Twisted Sister videos asks his daughter something to the extent of "What are you looking at?" when they're driving in the car.

 

However, now when I watch the video it seems to cut off right before that point. All you see is the girl looking at something and than the video ends. Does anyone else remember this? Was this part of the video taken out?

No, TOTBL is better. All the songs basically sound the same, but it's a really good sound. If they'd have put "Specialist" on there, it'd have been even better still.

Antics benefits from two songs that are arguably better than the best moments of TOTBL—"Slow Hands" and "Evil"—but yeah, Czech got it, the album is just too samey, especially in light of the debut. "Evil" should've been all over modern rock radio; I'm sure that the insanely stupid accompanying video with the puppet didn't have a hand in the song's lack of mainstream airplay, but you gotta wonder.

They are, but it's a nice enough sound to carry for two albums (though a little bit less on the second one). Antics made for a good listen, but they could've called it More Songs About Bright Lights and Turning Them On and it would've been truth in advertising.

Like a lot of recent New York bands, I used to think Interpol was terrible and shallow before hearing a single note they played, but I came around on them last summer, and on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs this summer. Still not impressed with the Strokes, though. Has to be an exception.

Basically, it's Mike Patton's "pop" album, or his collaberations with various artists and producers (Jel, Doseone, Kool Keith, Dub Trio, Norah Jones (yes, you read that right. It's suprisingly good), Odd Nosdam, Kid Koala, Dan The Automator, Rahzel, Amon Tobin, and Massive Attack), and it's fun.

TOTBL is the better album, I think. Antics is way good, but I think they actually show more range on the first album, which is kind of funny considering that its sameness was one of the nitpicks lots of people had with it.

 

That Mike Patton album sounds fun.

 

Girl Talk's Night Ripper is extremely, extremely fun. Basically a gigantic 42-minute mash-up with tons of extremely recognizable samples. Some of the combinations come off cheesy, particularly whenever the album veers towards shitty techno club beats, but most of it is inspired.
