Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 I'm on a big SMITHS kick right now. Will anyone explain to me why?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 Incandenza's voice makes me laugh so hard. I want to meet him and take a picture of us standing side by side with our arms around each other. It will be the new goatse.cx
Nighthawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Report Posted December 6, 2004 I'm on a big SMITHS kick right now. Will anyone explain to me why? It's because you're gay, like Incandenza and me. That's what Marilyn Manson says, anyway. Seriously, there's a chapter about how you're gay if you like the Smiths in his book.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 And you're gay if you still liked Judas Priest after you found out that Halford was gay.
godthedog Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 the fact that you've read marilyn manson's book makes you more gay than anyone who listens to the smiths. Â and i mean that in the best possible way.
Nighthawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Report Posted December 6, 2004 I also listen to the Smiths. But I'm comfortable with who I am.
Nighthawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Report Posted December 6, 2004 Ten Years After is pretty good. Classic rock is a largely neglected genre, unfortunately suffocating under the mud shark stinking corpse of Zeppelin.
5_moves_of_doom Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 So... for you Can fans... I finally got the first album. It's very, very, very good. Â But I'm wondering -- HOW exactly did Mooney have a breakdown (onstage, apparently)? Like, what happened? What'd he do? Â Anyway, yes, I'm going in chronilogical order from here. Â Â Â And here's one to research -- how many officially released studio albums (NO live albums or compilations) did Zappa actually release?
Dr. Zoidberg Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 - So, I decided to make a mix CD for my friend. He's into such things as Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Trapt, Dredg...all that MTV-esque stuff. Hopefully, I can turn him around.  TITLE: Random Songs that are better than "Rock Your Body." 1. Warsaw - Joy Division 2. I Woke Up This Morning - The Mooney Suzuki 3. Blue Monday - New Order 4. More Than This - Roxy Music 5. Shakedown on 9th Street - Ryan Adams 6. Electric Sweat - The Mooney Suzuki 7. Five Years - David Bowie 8. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones 9. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan 10. One More Cup of Coffee - The White Stripes (cover) 11. Blame it on Cain - Elvis Costello 12. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 13. To be Young (is to be high, is to be sad) - Ryan Adams 14. Arabian Knights - Siouxsie and the Banshees 15. Bodies - The Sex Pistols 16. Slow Hands - Interpol 17. Bitchin' Camaro - Dead Milkmen 18. The Modern Age - The Strokes 19. Handsome Devil - The Smiths 20. That's Life - Frank Sinatra  - I hate Morissey, but I like The Smiths. I don't get it. I mean, it's the same stuff, basically, but Morissey's solo albums just...ugh. I don't know. I'm weird.  - I really need to re-listen to Elvis Costello's My Aim is True. I remember liking it when I got it last year, and that was all I would listen to, but I haven't listened to it since, probably, December '03 - January '04.
Spaceman Spiff Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 A----w, did you like that I dedicated "Skin Poppin' Slut" to you. It made me feel all tingly. Down there.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 And here's one to research -- how many officially released studio albums (NO live albums or compilations) did Zappa actually release? A thousand
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 Ten Years After is pretty good. Classic rock is a largely neglected genre, unfortunately suffocating under the mud shark stinking corpse of Zeppelin. Alvin Lee is one of the best guitarists you'll ever hear. Period.
The Czech Republic Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 "Sister Christian" isn't a very good song at all.
The Czech Republic Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 Hey Incandenza, do you think my avatar is cute. Â She'd be your type if she wasn't like ten years younger than you
B. Brian Brunzell Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 Night Ranger sucks period. So does Asia. Â So I found a stash of great albums in the closet at my house the other day. They're my aunt and uncle's from way back in the day. I found The Wall as well as Ummagumma, not to mention Bitches Brew. There's a bunch of King Crimson in there, some Taj Mahal, Elvis Costello, Beatles, Echo and the Bunnymen, Leo Kottke, the list just goes on. Â I've stumbled upon a musical fucking goldmine. Musically speaking, life is good right now.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 Hey Incandenza, do you think my avatar is cute. She'd be your type if she wasn't like ten years younger than you I dunno, I adblocked whatever avatar you had a few weeks ago, so I can't see any images from the website where you host your pics.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 TITLE: Random Songs that are better than "Rock Your Body." I'd say that while over half of those songs may be better than "Rock Your Body," less than half are better than "Cry Me A River."
Nighthawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Report Posted December 6, 2004 Heeding Incandenza's advice, I didn't spend any money on anymore Microphones albums, but I heard somebody else's copy of It Was Hot And We Stayed In The Water and found it ok but dull. He was probably right.
Dr. Zoidberg Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 I'd say that while over half of those songs may be better than "Rock Your Body," less than half are better than "Cry Me A River." Whaaaat? Which ones?
Nighthawk Posted December 6, 2004 Author Report Posted December 6, 2004 Well, I'm not him, but here's what I think: unless you want to compare pop to pop, it's apples and oranges anyway, and "Cry Me A River" (and "Rock Your Body", for that matter) is a better pop song than many of those songs are of their respective genre.
Ravenbomb Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 anybody else have songs where you can sing along perfectly and remember all the words when you're listening to them, but can't remember any of them when you're not?
godthedog Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 yes. namely, "against all odds" by phil collins and "hello" by lionel richie.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 TITLE: Random Songs that still are better than "Rock Your Body." 1. Warsaw - Joy Division 3. Blue Monday - New Order 7. Five Years - David Bowie 8. Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones 9. Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan 12. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division 15. Bodies - The Sex Pistols 17. Bitchin' Camaro - Dead Milkmen These are better than "Rock Your Body," which is not to say I don't like 70% of the stuff on your mix. "To Be Young" is the one Ryan Adams song I sort of like. I don't know the Dead Milkmen song, so I left it on there rather than kill it. I love Interpol, but "Slow Hands" is no "Rock Your Body." "Evil," sure. Same for Elvis Costello; "Blame it on Cain" ain't bad, but it's in the lower tier of My Aim Is True. "Handsome Devil" is a good but not great Smiths song. Â I heard the new Ashanti song today and I was reminded that, moreso than anyone else, I think, she says her own name at the beginning of every song. I kind of wish David Byrne had done that while he was in the Talking Heads.
Guest The Shadow Behind You Posted December 7, 2004 Report Posted December 7, 2004 anybody else have songs where you can sing along perfectly and remember all the words when you're listening to them, but can't remember any of them when you're not? Every song ever recorded for me fits that bill.
Nighthawk Posted December 7, 2004 Author Report Posted December 7, 2004 Half of Xtina's Stripped is her saying how she's the cat's pajamas and if you say she's not it doesn't matter because she's better than you and your words make her even better than that. But then, nobody was saying much before she went into Stripped mode anyway, so I wonder if it was like rain on your wedding day or if it was a conscious preemptive strike. Truth is, it's really a pretty sharp album, a better version of what Pink tried to do with M!ssundaztood. The album still gets beat up because her image is unpopular and her persona unnaceptable to some... which is again, exactly what she said on the album. One of the larger cases of "Shut up, you pretentious baby. Wait a minute... she's right." since Marilyn Manson. I'm not sure how much was by design, but Stripped is one of the more avant-garde pop albums I've seen.
Ravenbomb Posted December 7, 2004 Report Posted December 7, 2004 I find that when I listen to "World at Large" by Modest Mouse I can sing along word for word, but I can only remember the first couple lines and then it's like "hmm hmm hmm something about moths...hmm hmm" then I remember the last couple lines
godthedog Posted December 7, 2004 Report Posted December 7, 2004 after listening to it probably 4 times in 2 days, i recant my opinion of 'kid A'. it's not 'ok computer', but it's good stuff, and i now like it better than 'amnesiac'. seems way more assured than it did before, with lots of solid moments. Â "everything in its right place" is still an essentially perfect song. Â even though i don't think the title cut or "the national anthem" are particularly good songs, the 1-2-3 punch of mashing them together with "everything in its right place" makes it dynamic enough for me not to mind. Â "how to disappear completely" keeps the cool dynamics going, and stands on its own as a song quite well. and i kind of like "treefingers" now. Â "optimistic" seems a pretty weak song, and an especially weak choice for their most "song-oriented" production on the record, but the crunchy sound is cool and gives another cool dynamic shift. Â "in limbo" is just blah. Â "idioteque" and "morning bell" make a good 1-2 punch, and "morning bell" particularly is just fucking creepy. Â "motion picture soundtrack" is bitchin, except for the harp & the backup vocalists, which remind me too much of 'let it be'. i know it's supposed to be excessive and syrupy, but the harp in general as an instrument really bugs me. still a really good song, & a great closer.
The Czech Republic Posted December 7, 2004 Report Posted December 7, 2004 Defiance, Ohio isn't that bad.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 7, 2004 Report Posted December 7, 2004 The new Nasum cd reassures their dominance of blast n groove shaped grindcore.
