Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 31, 2004 In fact, we're invading Iraq for their sand. It's really an altruistic gesture to the third world so that a crisis like this can be averted. Seriously though, after things get cleaned up, there's going to be a LOT of problems with disease, considering that some of the places hit didn't exactly have exquisite water supplies to begin with, and now they're full of bodies and debris. What country's medicines and people do you think will be over there? I'd argue that's more important than boards and nails or what have you. Look at how the money's being used. To look at it as plain dollar figures would be foolish.

Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted December 31, 2004 The cash is starting to flow now that the scope of the disaster is becoming clear. The US is already up to 350 million, the World Bank has put up 250 million, and others are starting to ramp up their relief aid. It's well past the billion dollar mark. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2005 The thing is, I wasn't joking. I've grown so used to tv networks exploiting every bad thing they can for a quick buck that it is almost a done deal that one of the networks will be tasteless and make a film. The question isn't if so much as when they will do it. Which is another truly sick thing about this. My prayers go out to everyone involved and to those who lost loved ones. The death toll has just climbed well over 120,000. It could take years to get the area back in order enough for people to live there. This is a tragedy of epic porportions. Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2005 I was thinking about this the other other day, and the way in which America reacts to this could possibly have an effect on the War on Terror. If they make sure that the resources are wisely spent and that their impact is overwhelmingly positive, then terror cells in SE Asia may dwindle, as public perception of America might change, leading to people not joining those cells

chaosrage 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2005 http://www.nypost.com/news/worldnews/37579.htm QUAKE ANGEL By DUNCAN LARCOMBE Quick-thinking 10-year-old Tilly Smith is being hailed as a hero after saving her parents and dozens of fellow vacationers from the deadly tsunami - thanks to a school geography lesson. Tilly warned the doubting adults at a resort that a massive tidal wave was about to strike - just minutes before the deadly tide rushed in and turned the resort into rubble. Tilly's family, from Surrey, England, was enjoying a day at Maikhao Beach last Sunday when the sea rushed out and began to bubble. The adults were curious, but Tilly froze in horror. "Mummy, we must get off the beach now!" she told her mother. "I think there's going to be a tsunami." The adults didn't understand until Tilly added the magic words: "A tidal wave." Her warning spread like wildfire. Within seconds, the beach was deserted — and it turned out to be one of the only places along the shores of Phuket where no one was killed or seriously injured. Last night, Tilly was being hailed as a savior. "I think it's phenomenal that Tilly's parents and the others on the beach are alive because she studied hard at school," said Craig Smith, the American manager of the JW Marriott Hotel where Tilly's family was staying. He said a tsunami is not like you see in the movies, where a huge wave wells up on the horizon and can be seen for miles off shore. "It is more like a sudden surge of water," he said. "There's very little warning. She's a hero." Tilly shrugged off the attention and modestly said, "Last term, my geography teacher, Mr. Kearney, taught us about earthquakes and how they can cause tsunamis. "I was on the beach, and the water started to go funny. "I recognized what was happening and had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami." Her mother, Penny Smith, 43, recalled how their family, including Tilly's father Colin, 46, and 7-year-old younger sister, Holly, were enjoying a Christmas vacation before tragedy struck. "When the water went back, I was like most people on the beach. I wanted to walk down and look at what was going on," she recalled. "It was only when Tilly explained what she thought was going to happen that I had second thoughts. "We ran off the beach as fast as we could and went to the first floor of the hotel where it would be safe. Minutes later the water surged right over the beach and demolished everything in its path. "It was terrifying to watch but I'm very proud of her." http://apnews.myway.com//article/20050102/D87BKBO80.html Elders' Sea Knowledge Spares Some Thais BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Knowledge of the ocean and its currents passed down from generation to generation of a group of Thai fishermen known as the Morgan sea gypsies saved an entire village from the Asian tsunami, a newspaper said Saturday. By the time killer waves crashed over southern Thailand last Sunday the entire 181 population of their fishing village had fled to a temple in the mountains of South Surin Island, English language Thai daily The Nation reported. "The elders told us that if the water recedes fast it will reappear in the same quantity in which it disappeared," 65-year-old village chief Sarmao Kathalay told the paper. So while in some places along the southern coast, Thais headed to the beach when the sea drained out of beaches - the first sign of the impending tsunami - to pick up fish left flapping on the sand, the gypsies headed for the hills. Few people in Thailand have a closer relationship with the sea than the Morgan sea gypsies, who spend each monsoon season on their boats plying the waters of the Andaman Sea from India to Indonesia and back to Thailand. Between April and December, they live in shelters on the shore surviving by catching shrimp and spear fishing. At boat launching festivals each May, they ask the sea for forgiveness. Guest sek69 Report post Posted January 2, 2005 It is kinda sad how the US had to be shamed into giving more aid. I really think they were going to try to get away with giving just the $15 million the initially offered until people (rightly) pointed out how callous that was considering how much coin we shell out to blow shit up. Whatever it took, I'm glad we're finally stepping up. What would really be cool is if we did what Canada is doing and have the government match donations people make. Besides, I don't think it's "hating America" or "America bashing" to point out that since all you hear about is how we're the bestest country in the world, when shit like this happens we should take the lead in the recovery effort instead of waiting until we get called out by some number-cruncher from the UN.
