It's really an altruistic gesture to the third world so that a crisis like this can be averted. Seriously though, after things get cleaned up, there's going to be a LOT of problems with disease, considering that some of the places hit didn't exactly have exquisite water supplies to begin with, and now they're full of bodies and debris. What country's medicines and people do you think will be over there? I'd argue that's more important than boards and nails or what have you. Look at how the money's being used. They were reporting this like a sign of the end saying that where the tsunami hit in Sri Lanka, there was a hotel called Vision of Paradise and in 3 minutes it became hell. The US is already up to 350 million, the World Bank has put up 250 million, and others are starting to ramp up their relief aid. It's well past the billion dollar mark. I've grown so used to tv networks exploiting every bad thing they can for a quick buck that it is almost a done deal that one of the networks will be tasteless and make a film. The question isn't if so much as when they will do it. Which is another truly sick thing about this. My prayers go out to everyone involved and to those who lost loved ones. The death toll has just climbed well over 120,000. It could take years to get the area back in order enough for people to live there. This is a tragedy of epic porportions. "Mummy, we must get off the beach now!" she told her mother. "I think there's going to be a tsunami." The adults didn't understand until Tilly added the magic words: "A tidal wave." Her warning spread like wildfire. Within seconds, the beach was deserted — and it turned out to be one of the only places along the shores of Phuket where no one was killed or seriously injured. Last night, Tilly was being hailed as a savior. "I think it's phenomenal that Tilly's parents and the others on the beach are alive because she studied hard at school," said Craig Smith, the American manager of the JW Marriott Hotel where Tilly's family was staying. He said a tsunami is not like you see in the movies, where a huge wave wells up on the horizon and can be seen for miles off shore. "It is more like a sudden surge of water," he said. By the time killer waves crashed over southern Thailand last Sunday the entire 181 population of their fishing village had fled to a temple in the mountains of South Surin Island, English language Thai daily The Nation reported. "The elders told us that if the water recedes fast it will reappear in the same quantity in which it disappeared," 65-year-old village chief Sarmao Kathalay told the paper. So while in some places along the southern coast, Thais headed to the beach when the sea drained out of beaches - the first sign of the impending tsunami - to pick up fish left flapping on the sand, the gypsies headed for the hills. I really think they were going to try to get away with giving just the $15 million the initially offered until people (rightly) pointed out how callous that was considering how much coin we shell out to blow shit up. Whatever it took, I'm glad we're finally stepping up. What would really be cool is if we did what Canada is doing and have the government match donations people make. Besides, I don't think it's "hating America" or "America bashing" to point out that since all you hear about is how we're the bestest country in the world, when shit like this happens we should take the lead in the recovery effort instead of waiting until we get called out by some number-cruncher from the UN.
