Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 For the life of me, I cannot make sense of this God forsaken album. It makes little to no sense musically and I think it's generally just WAY out there. Is it supposed to make any sense? If so, I would greatly appreciate someone helping me with it. Or some people, for that matter.

Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 I don't smoke anything, let alone something that could get me arrested. Should it be making sense given those limitations, or should I just trade this in a Strawberries?
Guest Phenom Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I don't smoke anything, let alone something that could get me arrested. Should it be making sense given those limitations, or should I just trade this in a Strawberries? Hey, I don't support the usage of Marajuana. So yes, do that Strawberries thing. Sounds delicious.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 The album revolves loosely around the music industry and the effect it can have on a person. Syd Barrett factors heavily in the album with what happened to him when he started becoming a star.
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 You're not going to get arrested for smoking marijuana. I mean, c'mon.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Don't try to make sense of it, just sit back relax and absorb the music...maaan The maryjawanna enhances it, but isn't required...or so I hear. You'd have to be possesion of alot to get arrested, simple personal use possesion is a misdemeanor...or so I hear
Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 But what about the weird way the songs are put together...long instrumentals then all of sudden in the middle of a track they'll start singing and it just seems so oddly put together. I don't know, maybe Pink Floyd just isn't for me.

Guest El Satanico Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 perhaps not...best thing is to not analyze them, it may make you insane.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 Heck, I can deal with nonsensical lyrics, I listen to Jpop and They Might Be Giants. My main problem is what I stated earlier, the funky structure of the songs.
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 They were trying to make it mesh with the Wizard of Oz.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 That was intentional? Okay...I guess now it makes more sense...
Mr. S£im Citrus Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Don't try to make sense of it, just sit back relax and absorb the music...maaan The maryjawanna enhances it, but isn't required...or so I hear. Call me a fuddy-duddy (or whatever the term is nowadays), but I'm of the opinion that if you have to be in an altered state of mind to appreciate an artist's music, then it isn't very good music.

Call me a fuddy-duddy (or whatever the term is nowadays), but I'm of the opinion that if you have to be in an altered state of mind to appreciate an artist's music, then it isn't very good music. Ding ding ding... exactly. I *hate* people that don't like to listen to certain types of music unless they are tripping. I have a friend like this who doesn't listen to Pink Floyd unless he's high. It makes me sick. Most stereotypes like that are beyond rational thought in the first place.
The Czech Republic Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 The album revolves loosely around the music industry and the effect it can have on a person. Syd Barrett factors heavily in the album with what happened to him when he started becoming a star. I think Wish You Were Here is more of an indictment of the music industry, though both, and The Wall for that matter, are heavily based on Syd Barrett. The Dark Side Of The Moon is a study on what causes insanity, with the conclusion that if you're not dead, you're crazy. Roger Waters and friends surveyed people hanging around the studios with questions about these matters (Paul McCartney was surveyed but his comments didn't make the cut) and placed them into the song. The causes of insanity that DSotM points to are wealth (Money), war (Us and Them), death (The Great Gig In The Sky), and time (Time), to name a few. I've heard people add avoiding problems for "On The Run" and drugs for "Any Colour You Like" but those aren't widely accepted. "Speak To Me" and "Breathe" serves as openings and "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" wrap things up. I don't know what you're talking about with long instrumentals and "then they just start singing." To me, everything is done just the way it should be. It is hardly "way out there." A lot of the music is really rather simple. But Money is in 7/4 time. w00t! The Wizard Of Oz synchronicity is not intentional. Bear in mind that there were no VCRs and CD players in 1973, so even if you were just watching it on TV, you'd have to flip the record over between "Great Gig In The Sky" and "Money" and then you'd lose your place. Also, some of the connections they make are really a reach. So yeah that should just about cover it. Enjoy the album.
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Well, if they were in an altered state of mind when they made it, wouldn't it make sense?
Edwin MacPhisto Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 It makes you sick? Nerd. Dark Side is decent, but even in my limited exposure to Pink Floyd, I've learned that it's not close to the best they've done. I don't even like em that much.
The Czech Republic Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Edwin, you gotta listen to Atom Heart Mother, now there's some great Floyd. Obscured by Clouds is a great one that gets lost in the shuffle. "Wot's...uh the Deal" should've been a much bigger song.
Nighthawk Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Yeah, but be on drugs. I'm sorry, that's just the way it is!
The Czech Republic Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 I missed it the first time around: this guy says J-Pop is good but Pink Floyd isn't? That explains everything.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Dark Side of the Moon is as straightforward as a progressive rock album gets, really. Obviously has some sort of cross-appeal to it, since it sold a bajillion copies. If anything, it's too obvious. I like the early Waters material best, but they're really a band I used to like a lot more before I heard King Crimson.
The Metal Maniac Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Well, if they were in an altered state of mind when they made it, wouldn't it make sense? IF?? This is Pink Floyd we're talking about, right?
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 I have Animals. I like it. That's it though.
1234-5678 Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 But what about the weird way the songs are put together...long instrumentals then all of sudden in the middle of a track they'll start singing and it just seems so oddly put together. I don't know, maybe Pink Floyd just isn't for me. Bingo, trade it and move on to the latest hip new band.
Guest dr. deaf Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 wow, to be arrested for some weed. Shit, if you just say the word do they put your name on file or something? A global patriot act data base......weed, weed, mota, doja, mary jane, hashish, keif, shake, bammer, mexi mix, banger, give me something to drink as I enjoy the import from british columbia, the dank, the groceries, the green, my love mary jane. The only ones that say you need it to enjoy the music are living idiot stereo types they've decided to live by. Imagine putting yourself in your own box so you can fit in with a culture that doesn't exist. The only thing you need to enjoy Floyd is a sincere interest in the music, if you don't have it, no matter how high you are, you won't enjoy it sober of fucked up. I want me a lid, a dime bag, nickle sack, snack of that great green devil with it's arms around our children. Long live ignoranc and paranoia!
Dobbs 3K Posted January 15, 2005 Report Posted January 15, 2005 I've never been into Pink Floyd, or any other '70s prog-rock. I just don't like the over-produced sound that most of it has. Plus songs like "Another Brick in the Wall" have been ruined by being so over played on classic rock radio...they're just cliche now.

If freakin' Pink Floyd is "overproduced" to you, I'd hate to see what you think of Def Leppard and their ilk. 2. Good thing that's one song from one album out of many over the course of almost 25 years, right?
