The NFL Offseason/Pre-Draft Thread

Recommended Posts

Man my boy Mark Bradley is having himself a nice game in there. And John Madden keeps saying that they think he's going to be a big component of the offense....now my heart swells with joy.....even though I could care less about the Bears.

I missed what they were saying. Did Manuel Wright cry b/c Nick Saban chewed him out?

Yeah Saban was yelling at him because he felt Wright was doing outstanding the day before and he was like "WTF" that he didnt feel like he could practice the next day (the day in question).

The Bears looks to have a good QB on their hands, now if they scratch Hutchinson out and put Orton there in the #2 spot, we'll be set.

It seemed like both rookie QBs were the best QBs tonight. Kyle Orton and Mark Bradley could be a dangerous combination in a couple of years. Add in Cedric Benson and the Bears should have a great offense for the future.

Well, I really don't feel like re-treading 32 pages to find out so I'll just ask. Sorry if this has already been gone over. I see everyone making predictions on all kinds of teams, but what about the Patriots? Are they no longer looking like they're in contention or something? I don't really keep up with a lot of pro offseason stuff so i figured I'd ask those who do.

Yeah, people are saying the Pats will have a down year. My guess is that they'll still win 12 games, +/- 1, and advance to the AFC Championship if not the Super Bowl. I doubt that they'll win, just because I can't see any team winning 3 in a row. But I also thought that they were unlikely to repeat last year and they proved me wrong, so I'm not going to bet against them.

Of all their losses, only Weis & Bruschi really matter. Law played so little last year, and the team did so well without him, that he's a non-factor. Plus, Starks, Gay, Samuel, & Poole are deeper than any four CBs that they've had in years. Johnson is a good run-stopper but Beisel & Brown are more than satisfactory replacements. And Crennel's void will easily be filled by Mangini.

And if they can find a way to keep Bruschi on the sidelines and in film studies, his loss will be minimized.

Rule of thumb is to always bet on the defending champs. This year though, I think the Pats train will come to a halt in the 1st round of the playoffs. Losing two heads off their 3 headed coaching hydra *is* hard to overcome and is one of the factors for why Dallas fell apart in the mid 90's after they lost all of their great coordinators (along with losing their head coach Jimmy Johnson sometime later).

Someone convince me why the Vikings could make the SB this year too. I just don't see it.

The Vikings will find out just how important a WR like Moss is to an offense this year. I have heard people say that they still have Burleson and Campbell and whomever else was there last year, but those guys benefitted big time from the attention that Moss received on the other side.

If Culpepper throws anything above 25 TDs this year I would be fairly surprised. However if he does, he should be considered one of the best QBs in the game right now.

I don't think the Boys/Pats comparison is that fitting, at least on the defensive side of the ball ... Mangini replacing Crennel won't mean a reinvention of the wheel, as he'll still be using the same D allignments and calls. It's not like they took a guy from outside the organization that needs to change everything ... it's just the guy on the sideline that's changed.

The loss of Weis will be a bigger obstacle.

I've attended Titans training camp every day for the past week, and, let me tell you, Norm Chow is gonna have the Titans putting up some kind of numbers this year. McNair is slimmed down and AGILE, and Henry/Brown with a little dose of Jarrett Payton is gonna be the dark horse running attack of 2005. Brandon Jones is gonna be a solid #3 receiver behind Bennett and Calico(who is looking very impressive as well).

Bold Prediction: Titans make playoffs this year as Wild Card. Book It.

The Vikings still have Daunte so thats a good start. Even without Onterrio Smith the ground game will still be very good. New OC Steve Loney is putting in an aggressive play action package. On defense they added two very good DB's in Smoot and Winfield. They made the playoffs last year and even without Moss they are a more complete team. They should win the division easily in my opinion because I'm not sold on the Packers and I will remain skeptical about Detroit until they win some games. With Mike tice as head coach I dont think they will be able to make it over the hump but they could very well make the NFC championship game and maybe even the Super Bowl.

Yeah Jones is from OU. Good to see my boys doing well.

I also heard they planed on using Rocky Calmus and Andre Woofolk a lot more. How are they in practice?

Calmus looked good in 7-on-7 drills, and I didn't see much of Woolfolk although I'm sure he'll be on the field a lot what with the whole Pacman Jones debacle.

Calmus' family was there when he was signing autographs afterward and I must say that his significant other is quite the looker. ;)

Well the Titans had a thing up about all the OU players on the Titans and they were talking about how Woofolk and Calmus will start.

I know he won't play ever but how did White look?

Hate to break it to you, but White didn't get one rep during the whole afternoon practice. I wasn't there in the morning but he's got "cut" written all over him.

I hate to beat a guy while he's down, but me and my friend couldn't help but laugh while he practiced dropping back over in the corner of the near field while the other four quarterbacks were hanging out at least 50 yards away during water break. He seems almost like an outcast or recluse.

Was he like that at OU?

Truthfully I didn't really go to any OU practices when he was there. From what I understand Mark Clayton was more of a leader than he was though. Makes me wonder how he won so many games and scored so many TD's if he wasn't much of a leader and didn't command his team.

I actually heard that Norm Chow likes him and that's the reason he even got picked up by the Titans.

Titans as a Wild Card??? I guess anything can happen in the NFL, but they are in a very tough division. I don't question the offesnse, but has their defense improved from last year?

Not so much improved, but healthy. EVERY single starter on defense missed at least one game last year and nearly half of the second-teamers did as well. Instead of Samari Rolle and Tank Williams, we were playing Michael Waddell and Donnie Nickey. Besides, the defense doesn't need to be spectacular(although I can't help but think the front seven might overachieve) for the Titans to win games. The question mark is the secondary, but with lots of young guys getting experience last year and hopefully a lift from the addition of Pacman Jones and Reynaldo Hill, I think they can at least do better than last year.

See what I mean? At this time of year, everyone's getting optimistic about their team's chances.

Then the season hits and most of us come crashing down to reality.

Unless he agrees to a pay cut, one that reduces his 2005 salary cap number and his scheduled base salary of $2.2 million for this season, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Peter Warrick could be cut by the team.

Warrick, who has not practiced in training camp as he continued his rehabilitation from a leg injury that limited him to four games in 2004, visited with Dr. James Andrews, the renowned Birmingham, Ala.-based orthopedics specialist earlier this week and was told he could return to the field. But the Bengals, wary of the injury and suddenly deeper at wide receiver than in recent years, might not clear Warrick to practice unless he agrees to rework his contract.

The decision for Warrick could come down to acquiescing to the Bengals wishes or being released and hoping there is interest in him as a free agent. It is also possible Cincinnati might trade Warrick if any potential suitors stepped forward.

The fourth overall selection in the 2000 draft, Warrick enjoyed a career season in 2003, with 79 receptions for 819 yards and seven touchdowns while working principally out of the slot. But the leg injury scuttled his '04 campaign and the former Florida State star had only 11 catches for 127 yards in four appearances.

Cincinnati coaches have privately questioned Warrick's diligence in rehabilitation and indicated in training camp that they were prepared to play without him. Even Warrick said this week that he did not "know my role in Cincinnati [anymore]."

Certainly the wide receiver landscape has changed in Cincinnati, where the Bengals have become young, talented and deep at the position. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who replaced Warrick as the starter opposite Pro Bowl performer Chad Johnson in 2004, is coming off a career year and this spring signed a new four-year contract to stay with the club.

In what is a make-or-break season for third-year pro Kelley Washington, the former Tennessee standout is having a solid camp. And the coaches are high on rookie Chris Henry, a third-round choice from West Virginia.

Coach Marvin Lewis said two weeks ago in camp that the team "has moved on" in regard to Warrick, meaning the coaches were preparing as if he would not be available. "Once we did that last season," Lewis said, "we became a better team."

Warrick has appeared in 66 games, and started 55, in five seasons. He has 264 receptions for 2,811 yards and 18 touchdowns.
