What sport calls

Recommended Posts

Be they funny, appropriate at a major moment in sports history, or even bad or depressing?

The two in my signature do obviously, but there's four that really stick out to me:

1986: Jack Nickalus strokes a putt to take the lead on the 17th at Augusta on Sunday...."Maybe? YES SIR!!!!"

2002: "SAKIC? SCOOOOOOOOORES! THAT'S GOTTA BE IT!" Bob Cole when Joe Sakic made it 5-2 Canada in the Men's Olympic finals.

2003: Mike Weir from 94 yards at the par 5 fifteenth at Augusta on Sunday...David Feherty "Find a spot, take one bounce, skid to a halt...That looks like it could be the right spot, OH CANADA!" The sheer hilarity of Feherty in general, coupled with the apt timing and the pride I was feeling as a Canadian and left hander really makes that one stick. If anyone's seen the official Augusta highlight film from 2003, they really play up that Mattiace had finished at seven, not eight under, unbeknownst to Weir, who has the five foot birdie putt to tie.

DF: This to take the lead.

Jim Nantz: Weir doesn't know that.

DF: YES! 3 to Play and we have a tie.

JN: The birdie ties him with Mattiace, but he doesnt know that. A second roar, however, occurs when Mattiace's score is posted. It tells Weir that this tournament is entirely within his grasp. I swear, even writing this, I'm getting goosebumps.

2004: Nantz again, when Mickelson makes the putt that enabled my avatar picture.

"Is it his time? YES! AT LONG LAST!" As happy as I was about Mike winning in 2003, I'd been pulling for Mickelson to win a major for a long time. Weir was never the 'best player never to'....Also, I'd had Phil in my pool 3 straight years. My avatar was also my most recently shed one-manly tear.

"I DONT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!!!" during Kirk Gibson's HR in the '88 WS.

Also during a Knicks-Lakers game a few years ago, Kobe Bryant had a really nice baseline dunk and Marv Albert goes.."OH MY.. KOBE BRYANT.. WITH NO REGARD FOR HUMAN LIFE!"

Well, the obvious one in this category is "Do you believe in Miracles".

Also, although it was long before my time, I think that I have heard "The Giants win the pennant, The Giants win the pennant" more than anything else.

That didn't cross my mind at all.

"Wide Right" for the bad.

"There's the Bas buck..oh no, armbar! ARMBAR!" for the good.

"That's disgusting" for the ugly. Joe Buck you oversensitive bitch.

Czech Republic is a terrible poster.

"GET OUT OF HERE WIT DAT!" during some basketball game, can't remember when. Derrick Coleman completely imposed his physical will on some poor defender and had a massive dunk over him. Can't even remember who it was, some white dude. It was just really funny.

Well for me personally the one that alway stands in my mind is during the Sugar Bowl last year when they broke the huddle at 4th and 10 with a chance to tie and the seconds winding down. I just remember from my local radio...... "They break the huddle and come to the line. 4th and 10 could this be the National title on the line? White in the shotgun hikes the ball and..........HE'S SACKED! HE IS SACKED!"

And of course my favorite call of all time is "HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL! HAVLICEK STOLE THE BALL!"

"And....GOOOOOD! BULLS WIN! BULLS WIN!"

Seriously, you can't get through a segment featuring Jordan without seeing him burn poor Craig Ehlo.

It only happened eight months ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday: Peter Maher's call of the overtime winner against Detroit that put the Flames into the WC finals.

"The puck's in the left corner of the Red Wings' zone, and the Flames have it... Conroy goes behind the net, and he's wrapped up by Lang. The puck into the left corner for Iginla... Iginla with the shot, Joseph save, rebound... THEY SCORE! YEAH BABY! YEAH BABY! MARTIN GELINAS SCORES! THE FLAMES WIN IT, 1-0! YEAH BABY!"

And of course

"NO!.....NO!.....The Cardinals have knocked the Vikings out of the playoffs!"

Oh and this one:

"Manning drops back to pass....throws right and....intercepted by Ty Law (in the background you hear "YOU STUPID PIECE OF...it gets garbled but it made me laugh)."

I can recite the call of Paul Henderson's winner in game 8 of the Summit Series, even though it was 11 years before I was born. Also love the call of Sakic's last goal in the '02 Olympics.

The video of the '93 World Series is awesome, since it has the TV call and both Blue Jays and Phillies versions of the radio call of Joe Carter's homer over the end credits. Obviously, Tom Cheek's 'touch 'em all, Joe' is awesome, but I love the TV version: 'Well hit down the left field line, way back and GONE!'

"OH...what a MOVE by JORDAN" - Marv Albert in full mastubatory shilling form everytime Michael Jordan made even the most routine of plays. It was a little obnoxious.

Max beat me to it.

"Snap, ball down, kick is on the way, and it is.....GOOD!!!! IT'S GOOD!!!! IT'S GOOD!!! Adam Vinatieri, with a 48 yard field goal, and the game is over, and the Patriots are Super Bowl Champions!!! THE PATRIOTS are Super Bowl Champions, the best in the National Football League!!"

"There's a long drive, if it stays fair....home run!!"

The full quote from the Bird steal is (I think): Aaaaand, oh THERE'S A STEAL BY BIRD, underneath to DJ and he lays it in!!!"

Ah, good times, back when Toronto cared about baseball. That was a great time, especially partying on Yonge Street afterwards.

I don't know if you consider it sports but the 1998 Royal Rumble, Jim Ross: "Stone Cold, Stone Cold, Stone Cold is going to Wrestlemania!"

Wow, CanadianGuitarist, thank you for that assortment of compelling golf calls

I don't like basketball but I can appreciate the emotion in big games and memorable calls that follow. Any golf fan will tell you the same thing. The post is called 'That stick in your mind', not 'things that only the Czech Republic likes'. To each their own, dickhead.

I can't believe I didn't put Joe Carter's on there....It's on my top 10 sports moments, with obviously, everything else I've mentioned so far...even 1992, isnt on there, however. Daniel Igali kissing the Canadian flag at Sydney in 2000 usurped it.

The call from the 1982 Big Game.

All right here we go with the kick-off. Harmon will probably try to squib it and he does. Ball comes loose and the Bears have to get out of bounds. Rogers along the sideline, another one ... they're still in deep trouble at midfield, they tried to do a couple of ... the ball is still loose as they get it to Rogers. They get it back to the 30, they're down to the 20 ... Oh the band is out on the field! He's gonna go into the end zone! He got into the end zone! Will it count? The Bears have scored but the bands are out on the field. There were flags all over the place. Wait and see what happens; we don't know who won the game. There are flags on the field. We have to see whether or not the flags are against Stanford or Cal. The Bears may have made some illegal laterals. It could be that it won't count. The Bears, believe it or not, took it all the way into the end zone. If the penalty is against Stanford, California would win the game. If it is not, the game is over and Stanford has won. We've heard no decision yet. Everybody is milling around on the FIELD! AND THE BEARS! THE BEARS HAVE WON! THE BEARS HAVE WON! Oh my God, the most amazing, sensational, traumatic, heartrending ... exciting thrilling finish in the history of college football! California has won ... the Big Game ... over Stanford.

Keith Jackson's call of the Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook hail mary against Michigan just for the "INCREDIBLE" he lets out.

All those come to mind but the first one I thought of was the one on every sports program that shows Boston Championships.

"And Havilchek steals the ball!"
