Any good ghetto movies?

Recommended Posts

I was watching Manito and Do the right thing and I was surprised to see how real americans live and not the way I've been told my whole life that your all blonde and rich and pretty. So I was wondering if you guys know any movies that are about like you know black ghetto or hispanic that I could see.

Juice

Paid in Full

Belly

Menace II Society

Boyz in the Hood

Poetic Justice

Jason's Lyric <--- underrated "hood classic"

Fresh <--- powerful ending

Those are all dramas. And pretty good ones too.

8 Mile was actually okay.

Maybe it was because I'm a big fan of rap music and enjoy watching freestyles.

I used to be a big fan of Eminem's until he gayed up every guest appearance he made in 2004 and dropped one of the worst albums of the year.

razazteca already said them both, but I think that Menace II Society is the best "black ghetto" movie & American Me is the best Latino one.

Not sure how real "ghetto" movies are since I'm a mighty whitey from the suburbs (Where's Ripper when we really need him?), but I always liked Menace II Society. Also on the "Training Day" DVD they said they shot a lot of scenes in the ghetto, so you might want to watch that just for the background...

Juice - Crap. Only famous because of Tupac's overrated performance

Paid in Full - actually a pretty good movie. You have to ignore scenes with the bad non actors, although Cam did a good job. Pretty real too.

Belly - The worse piece of trash in the history of film. Seriously bad, unrealistic crock of bullshit. NO ones life is like this bullshit. To summerize I hate this movie.

Menace II Society - Pretty good depiction of the time. Everyone in the film is ignorant as hell, even the "hero" of the pict. Pretty good movie.

Boyz in the Hood - I still think its a lil overrated, but a damn good movie. Also pretty real for the time period, although I still say Menace is a lil more real.

Poetic Justice - CRAP. Although if you want to hear 10,000,000,000,000 curse words in a 60 second span, just go to the Tupac/Janet argument. The only cool thing about this movie is Chicago brushing his hair all day and Tupac once again proving that there is no way he can fight in real life when you see him and Tone Loc beating up dude in the beganing. Just a dumb movie. Not realistic...just stupid.

Jason's Lyric <--- underrated "hood classic" my ass. THIS is on Belly levels of dumbass movie. Only good things about this movie. Eddie Griffith and his hair...and him in rollers. Treach was pretty good being a country boy. Thats...about.....it.... Bokeem Woobine being his usual over acting self and a couple of overated sex scenes with Jada. This is just a trash ass movie and not a classic in anysense. Reason it is forgotten.

Fresh <--- Thats a damn good movie, although a LITTLE unrealistic. Still a DAMN good movie.

Blood in Blood Out - Good movie but way too mutha fuckin LONG. But a very good movie.

Mi Vida Loca - Shitty movie. Thats all I can say about it. Not very good, but some like it.

American Me - another damn good movie. Plus the ending kicks large amounts of ass.

Training day offers up one of the realest portrayals of the bad aspects of the hood I have seen. THAT movie's parts were real.

How about 187?

I liked that movie too. Also, not sure how real it was, but I liked it as a movie. Although the guy at the end was really stupid. If he paid any kind of attention he would have known what was in the chamber.

Juice isnt crap. Its a pretty good movie. And considering it was Tupac's first acting gig and he did a damn good job, I dont see how he was overrated.

Belly, ok, the movie is pretty stupid. But its something to watch if you are bored.

Poetic Justic is nothing more than a "hood love story". I think its actually decent. Same for Jason's Lyric.

These aren't movies that are going to get 15 Oscar nominations. Take them for what they are, good movies in their genre.

No, I won't take them for what they are. If these movies stared white actors, they would be called the stupid bullshit that they are. Because they are "black" films we have to pretend they are decent? No. A bad movie is a bad movie. There is nothing loving or love storyish about Poetic Justice. It was a poorly written, poorly acted, poorly paced, horrible movie. The dialouge was laughably ridiculous, as it was in Jasons Lyric. Just bad acting left and right, bad story, and purely unbelieveable "romance" in them.

Juice, like New Jack City, looked like a great movie when I came out, but they aged horribly. I dare you to go watch those movies today and still be able to call them good. They are really cheesy and corney little movies.

Poetic Justice was supposed to be a romantic/drama. It failed miserably. Juice was supposed to be a drama...it failed miserably. I don't judge acting in a horror movie or a martial arts flick because I don't expect them to be have great acting. You are watching for another reason. Drama/Action/romance...those are all genres that good film making should be expected. And I don't care if it is a all purple cast, when a movie sucks, like these do they suck.

Now I can understand if you like them, but i am not with the whole "taken for what they are they are good movies" they aren't. Taken for what they are, they are failed attempts at good film making.

I work at blockbuster, and i swear, if I ahd a dime for everytime someone came in asking for a "ghetto" or "gangster" movie, I'd have a shitload of dimes.

If you're looking for ghetto as in black movies, all the good ones have been said

if you're talking about poor, city ghetto types, I gotta pimp In America. It's about a family of poor irish immigrants who move into, and live in, new york. It's a great movie.

Tony Jaymz-Keeping it gangsta, fo'shizzle my nizzle, my real name is k-rizzle dizzle, soon I gotta go take a drizzling shits, since 1986

Colors, New Jack City, Training Day are basically the same thing.

Colors-a movie about LAPD's CRASH unit trying to knock out gang violence...

New Jack City-a special unit, with two members being cops that do whatever it takes to take out the bad guys, is assigned to take down a drug kingpin...

Training Day-a young rookie cop is assigned to a hard edged, heavily decorated cop who also happens to be corrupt and evil...

they're all cop movies, I guess, if that's what you meant...
