BBC asks Bob Marley for an interview...

Recommended Posts

...he's fucking dead!

Here's the link

LONDON (AFP) - A red-faced BBC apologised for requesting an interview with Bob Marley, the Jamaican reggae legend who died 24 years ago.

BBC Three, one of the public broadcaster's digital TV channels, sent an e-mail to the Bob Marley Foundation saying it wanted to do a documentary about his hit song "No Woman No Cry".

It said the project would involve Marley -- who died of cancer in May 1981 at the age of 36 -- "spending one or two days with us", and that "it would only work with some participation from Bob Marley himself".

In a statement, the BBC said: "We are obviously very embarrassed that we didn't realise that the letter to the Marley Foundation did not acknowledge that Mr Marley is no longer with us."

Marley would have been 60 last February 6, a date that was celebrated with great fanfare by his legion of fans worldwide.

A BBC press officer, contacted by AFP in London on Friday, confirmed that the gaffe was not an April Fool's joke.

Remind me why when the BBC does a news story I should listen or believe them again?

I'm not entirely sure how you forget Bob Marley DIED.

What's next? Calling Jim Valvano's wife to see if he is around for coffee?

(yes, I know it's possible this is a gag but I don't care, I'm having my fun)

Bah...the BBC is generally regarded as the most credible news organization in the world. Sounds like someone just messed up on this one.

American news is fucking awful compared to BBC news no wonder most americans have no idea what is going on in the world and a decent persective of world issues.

I'm not having a go at americans only at their shitty news

You're probably right. Though Fox News could improve exponentially by firing Shepard Smith. Seriously that guy is like the worst person on there.

Also, Bob Marley. Overrated and I can't stand people that go through their Bob Marley worship phase in high school where they smoke lots of pot and carry around tote bags.

In a related story, Hulk Hogan was quoted as saying pro-wrestling matches aren't staged.

You can say that if you want. Like I can say washington apples taste good, but if they're the only apples I ever ate I can't say washington apples suck. Maybe I just don't like apples.

I happen to like reggae. I don't own any CDs or anything, but I'm not opposed to listening to it.

Pfft. Don't call him overrated unless you listen to reggae. And don't tell me you do, because nobody does.

Because it's bad.

Exactly, Bob Marley isn't overrated, you just don't like reggae. But Bob Marley is beyond music. He's in the class with Presley, Morrison, and Robert Johnson. Calling his music overrated is missing the point. I don't love the guy, I'm just pointing it out.

Reggae is ok. I like ska better, and I don't like ska that much. But it is impressive that an extremely culture based style, from a small and in some ways insignificant area became world recognized and appreciated, mostly because of Bob Marley. I can respect that.

Nicely put.

He's more of an icon, what he did is way different than the reggae today, and by reggae I mean all the shitty dancehall music that's passed around as reggae. The guy was loved for a lot more than his music. I personally love the music he put out, regardless of how you'd want to generalize it, and that's all that matters to me. I'm not gonna let a bunch of dumbass pothead kids who pretty much love anything the weed culture shoves at them ruin it for me.

You mean musicians whose likenesses are worn on t-shirts by stupid kids at the mall who pretend to "totally respect everything they've done for music, man, because, dude, they're like, they're fucking legends."

You've just proved why you're the best poster on this board.

And to think I used to be weirded out by you.

I went back and re-read his apple analogy though and realized it doesn't make sense...

I think it would be more like "I can say washington apples taste good, but if they're the only apples I ever ate I can't say that all apples suck, just those apples"

Translating to music, it's like I can't say all metal sucks just because I think Metallica sucks

At least I think that's what he was getting at

Not exactly. In the metal parlance, if you don't like any metal bands, you shouldn't really say Metallica sucks because you're not in a position to decide. A person who doesn't like metal at all would say that Slayer sucks as well (I'm assuming you like them based on naming yourself after them). So it's not really this band or that band that they're judging, it's the style.

The same is true here. Without liking reggae, you can't really single out Bob Marley as being particularly bad. Whatever standard is used to judge how good or bad he may be, you're already prejudiced against it.

I argue the exact same way IDRM does and agree 100%. Plus, I've been told that my mom is hot as well. It's a little unnerving, frankly.

Pix plz!!!

Oh yeah well *I* saw a guy at the mall who thought Che was the lead singer of the Doors. Oh brother.

Yeah, they're both genres of music with good and bad. It would be stupid to completely dismiss either.
