Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 The only good band to come out of England in the last five years. Discuss.
KTID Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 One of the many great bands to come out of britain in the last 5 years.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 3, 2005 Author Report Posted April 3, 2005 I should've added the qualifier "that made it to the U.S."
KTID Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 Still doesn't eliminate The Music, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Delays, Razorlight, Kasabian and Bloc Party.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 3, 2005 Author Report Posted April 3, 2005 Save the unheard-by-me Delays and Kasabian, I'm secure in the knowledge that the Futureheads are the best. So, I might be seeing these guys when they come back to the States in June. I imagine they are very animated when they play.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 They're harmless, but I don't dig them much. Saw them on Conan though a while back, and they seem like a pretty passable live band.
KTID Posted April 3, 2005 Report Posted April 3, 2005 But you said they were the only good band to come out of the UK. Not just "the best".
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 4, 2005 Author Report Posted April 4, 2005 I'd say they're the best if they're the only good band.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Still doesn't eliminate The Music, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Delays, Razorlight, Kasabian and Bloc Party. I actively dislike everyone on that list except Franz and Bloc Party. Futureheads are fine too, though I haven't given their album more than a once-over. I'll listen to it again tonight.
DCMaximo Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Still doesn't eliminate The Music, The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Delays, Razorlight, Kasabian and Bloc Party. These bands (with the exception of Bloc Party who seem passable) all make me ashamed to be British. Our music scene is really on a downward spiral the last couple of years and no matter how much the media try to tell me that Keane are interesting (they aren't) or the Kaiser Chiefs will be great (they wont), it doesn't gloss over the fact that these bands are all hype, no substance. The Futureheads do an average enough Jam impression, but there has to be something better in the UK.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 What the hell is so good about them? Everything I've heard was vaguely harmless I guess, but certainly nothing more. 'Hounds of Love' can fuck right the fuck off. And I agree that every current British band mentioned is shite, though I will express my fondness for British Sea Power.
Anorak Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Kasabian are idiots. They try too hard to have an 'attitude' and their music isn't nearly good enough to back any of the posturing up and make it forgiveable. Even declaring their firm support of Leicester City couldn't soften me up enough not to realise they're about as far from being the genuine rock'n'roll article as Showaddywoddy.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 4, 2005 Report Posted April 4, 2005 Showaddywoddy. Showaddywoddy?
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 "Hounds of Love" is fucking great, PLAGIARISM!, shut up. British Sea Power...they're passable, but I'd rather just listen to Echo and the Bunnymen, ya know?
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I'm just sick of the current wave of XTC thievery, and the futureheads are far and away the biggest offenders.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 Oh, other than some Partridge-esque vocal inflections and a general spazziness not unlike XTC's Drums and Wires, the Futureheads aren't ripping off much. Their songs are a bit more muscular than the older band's.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I saw the Delays supporting the Manics Sunday. Fucking bollocks. I don't think there have been any truly great bands yet in the last 5 years from either side of the Atlantic. Bloc Party have the potential though.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 British Sea Power is good, but Inc has a point -- I'd rather be listening to the Bunnymen. Of course, with the Futureheads there is quite an abundance of bands I'd rather be listening to. And all of those other bands are pretty terrible, aside from the Bloc Party, who I have heard mostly good things about but have not looked into too thouroughly because I heard one song and didn't enjoy it that much. Thought it was passable, though, so maybe the rest is better.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 TV On the Radio are the best American band to emerge within the last five years. There are some other good ones, I guess, but not very many.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted April 6, 2005 Author Report Posted April 6, 2005 I would've put the Decemberists alongside TVOTR, but man, I can't get into Picaresque outside of a few songs.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 Well, 'Hounds of Love' was certainly better than the other song of theirs I keep hearing, I'll give it that. Dunno what that one was called. Given the skippy Englishness of their tunes, I think I'll probably come to regard them as somewhat of a guilty pleasure, which no doubt will piss me off even more.
5_moves_of_doom Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 I like Clinic's first album. They're from England.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 British Band. Did 'Under the moon of love'. Which probably doesn't help you. Clinic are good, and I Am Kloot are ok as well. I've heard another futureheads song, after warming to 'Hounds of Love' slightly, and it wasn't good. Something to do with 'false conversations'? The intro wasn't bad.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Impeccably dressed, I'll give 'em that.
PLAGIARISM! Posted April 7, 2005 Report Posted April 7, 2005 Yes. Lucky the photographer happened to be in the playground at the time.
