King Kamala 0 Report post Posted April 15, 2005 My favorite right now would be one I saw on VH1 Classic recently for Steve Winwood's Valerie. Its pretty much just Steve Winwood wearing a silver suit playing the keyboard with a wind machine blowing for three minutes. Any early low budget video has a special spot in my heart. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Repeated from the best videos thread, Prince's "When 2 R in Love". Black screen with captions. Also the Prince video that was just clips from other videos. I can't remember what song that was... "Paisley Park" maybe? Prince had balls when it came to videos. Jingus 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 What was that one Alanis video where she just stared at the camera for three minutes straight? The girl may be annoying, but she certainly ain't afraid to buck convention and try to do something different.

BUTT 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 What was that one Alanis video where she just stared at the camera for three minutes straight? The girl may be annoying, but she certainly ain't afraid to buck convention and try to do something different. "Head Over Feet". I like George Michael's "Praying for Time". Just the lyrics on a blank screen, like that Prince video, and it's the only George Michael song I really like.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 "Head Over Feet" would have been unconventional if not for "Nothing Compares 2 U," which is infinitely better as both a video and song.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Which I've also never heard of. Who did it, what album?
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 The Replacements' "Bastards of Young." Just a dude sitting on a couch, listening to the song on his turntable. Nothing happens until the end of the song where it starts to "skip," causing the guy to get up and kick in his speakers. There was another Replacements video in which the band just sat around and did nothing for its entirety. I think it was for "Alex Chilton," but I can't remember right now. Jingus 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Meh. Not that similar. Although I'm sure there have been a billion student art films that looked a lot like the "Head Over Feet" video, I'm not aware of another music video that did the same thing previously. spiny norman 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Which I've also never heard of. Who did it, what album? Whoa, you're strange. Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. Great video, great song.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 When I saw Prince last year, he played "Nothing Compares 2 U" in the encore. It's one of the best songs he's ever written. Works perfectly with a male or female vocalist, too. And Jingus, I don't think Incandenza's discussion of Replacements videos was comparing them to Alanis or Sinead O'Connor. Jingus 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Sorry, thought he was answering my question. I don't like Prince's music all that much and am therefore not familiar with it. Could you please describe the video of the song in question?
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 Ok, I think we're running down different streets here. Prince wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U," but to the best of my knowledge never released a studio version of it (though he does play it live). In 1990 he gave the composition to Sinead O'Connor, who put it on I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got and turned it into her only top 40 hit, ever. It's a beautiful song, and the video is O'Connor in extreme close-up, just singing the song in one take. About halfway through she slips a few tears. That's it. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 One really weird cheap-ass music video is Sarah McLachlan's new one. The whole video is some excitin' graphics, text, and stock footage intercut with her just playing guitar on a porch, while the text and graphics indicate how the budget for her video was used to buy poor Africans various necessities. The weird aspect is that the budget adds up to something around a million dollars, which just leads me to wonder what studio thought washed-up Sarah McLachlan deserved seven figures for her video. B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 That would be "Scrape", I believe. And yes, it's a great vid. I love the "Run to the Hills" video for the old silent movie scenes. and that Bjork video where she's on a flatbed truck going through New York is great too. Gary Floyd 0 Report post Posted April 16, 2005 The new Creatures video for the song "Godzilla". Granted, there's no footage from Godzilla films, but there is plenty of old black and white B-Movie footage in it. Also the Prince video that was just clips from other videos. I can't remember what song that was... "Paisley Park" maybe? Prince had balls when it came to videos. An awesome cheap ass Prince video, is the Pre-MTV, pre-fame, pre-Revolution video for I Wanna Be Your Lover. Its just Prince in a women's shirt and tight pants with long hair and a cattapillar moustache playing all of the instruments.

King Kamala 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2005 I can't believe nobody has mentioned one of the cheapest videos ever made... "Dreams" by Van Halen! 4 minutes of planes flying around, great fun... They have two videos for that and the other is fairly cheapish too. Its just news footage of Van Halen returning to the Whiskey A Go Go and features a bunch of guys with mullets running trying to get in. Pretty funny.

Special K 0 Report post Posted April 18, 2005 Besides breaking a camera on 'Sabotage', that must have been a cheapo. 'Dead leaves and the Dirty Ground' was probably very cheap. My friend's tiny theater company used the same effect very well in a recent play.
