One and Only Star Wars Geekiness Thread

Recommended Posts

I FINALLY got to borrow the OT DVDs from a friend, and the sound guy is the most boring person who has ever lived. I could listen to Lucas talk about OT stuff forever though. All I've ever heard until recently was PT interviews and stuff, with the exceptions of the interview scraps on the OT Special Edition VHS tapes.

You need to find a copy of From Star Wars to Jedi. Lucas reveals so much hypocrisy in that video. This is my favorite line:

Lucas: One of the fatal mistakes that almost all science fiction films make is that they spend so much time on the settings and creating the environment...that they spend film time on it. And you don't have to spend too much film time to create an environment. What they're doing is showing off the amount of the work they've...generated. And it slows the pace of the film down; the story is not the setting. The story is the the story, it's the plot.

Don't the prequels resemble those remarks?

That was great. I just read the Lucas article in the new Entertainment Weekly where he basically contradicts ALL that shit. He says basically for the prequels that he started with a thin script about characterization and political turmoil, then from there did "jazz riffs and noodling" in terms of creating huge worlds and showing it all off. My jaw dropped when he said 60% of what he originally had in mind is ROTS, whereas the other 40% was stuff done in the previous 2 movies (yes, 20% per movie). Yes, even Lucas admits he was cashing the paycheck on the first two prequels.

Luke was probably always wearing that funky Gilligan hat, and Wattoo kept Anakin indoors most of the time.

Sorry, that's the best I could come up with.

Maybe they had SPF 5000 sunscreen.

Well the National Holiday for Star Wars geeks (I mean that in a good way) is upon us. I am actually excited for this one, as I love action, dog fights in space, and light saber battles. I have also seen the reviews and they have been positive. I just hope we don't another "sand" pick up line (which is one of my all time unintentional comic moments). I am going to wait a few weeks for the crowds to die down, I hate waiting in line to get a front row seat that is off to the right or left. Movies should not require a chiropractor to readjust my neck. This does appear to be the best movie of the first three and still will not be as good as the orginals. I hope that if they do decide to make more Star Wars movies, please give us characters like the orginals, less Jar-Jar annoying, and do not let Lucas anywhere near the dialogue.

Question: Tonight will be the first time going to an opening night premiere and it's Star Wars. I got tickets for the 12:20am showing; how early should I arrive for good seats? I haven't got a clue.

Roughly two to three hours, give or take, until Kotz has a pipe in one hand, cock in his other.

Granted I probably won't be able to see this until next weekend or sio but I'm still excited.

I dunno, when I came out of the theatre I was like 'best movie ever!'

But now that I've slept on it, I dunno, it seemed flawed in places, but I won't be a tight ass and reveal those places. But it was still awesome.

Lucky me, living in Australia, 2 minutes from a MegaPlex with with enough cinema's that every time one was filled up they could simply open another one. Why, I bought my ticket yesterday.

I'm pretty pumped... a random mall visit revealed that the Cineplex Odeon here is showing Episode III. This is good news to me as otherwise I would have had to go to the Famous Players theatre which, despite recent commercial development, is still out in the middle of nowhere in this city when you don't drive. I could have bought a midnight ticket too (unless the machine prompted me to sotp by saying "sorry, this showing is sold out" after the fact) but I wasn't with anyone, I have to go to work tomorrow morning, and I figure I can just go from work to the mall tomorrow afternoon with some friends.

Canadians, is Famous Players and Cineplex Odeon showing the same movie at the same time a usual occurrence in your area(s)? This is one of the first times it's been done in this city.

For me...I have a good theater chain (I think) in United Artists.

So, I'm going to be comfy.

Good, good..

The Mall Cineplex Odeon here has by far the best seats (and serves Coke instead of Pepsi!). Besides being a better location for me than the other megaplex, I prefer it in general anyway.

The current plan (due to it being in a mall) is to go at 4pm after work, buy tickets for whatever time is available, then wander around or whatever, probably stop in the food court to get dinner (unless we can just get right on in to an afternoon show).

Then again my friends are cheap and will probably want to go to the slightly cheaper formerly run-down but recently renovated 3 screen theatre downtown. That's not my ideal viewing location for a Star Wars film.

3 FUCKING HOURS!!!!!!!!!!

Advice: get there an hour and a half early if the theater is sold out or youll be sitting in the front, 2nd row, behind someone in a stormtrooper helmet.

I'll be leaving right after I finish watching Return of the Jedi

Right now, I'm at the main speeder-bike scene.

I just spoke with someone who watched it at the theatre he works at earlier in the week (spman, actually) and he said it was only 2:30 with one trailer. While that is close to 3 hours, it's not quite. But I guess factor in approx. 4 more trailers and commercials for cars and an actor playing a carpenter explaining to me why pirating movies is wrong and yeah, you could be looking at 3 hours.

Remember when Padme fucking blew up Anakin's spot in "Clones"...

"Oh, Anakin's not a Jedi! He's still a Padawan!"

That bitch better get what's comin' to her.

Speeking of which...Luke was lucky to grow up in the time he did.

He didn't have to have that stupid braid the Padawans have while he was under training.

Review from the local fag who hates everything...

‘Sith’ happens

And last movie in 'Star Wars' saga happens to be just OK

By ROBERT W. BUTLER

The Kansas City Star

Yes, it’s an improvement over the last two. How could it not be?

And “Revenge of the Sith” does tie up most of the loose ends of the “Star Wars” saga, chronicling the final transformation of once-promising Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker into the cosmos’ greatest heavy, Darth Vader.

Still this film’s modest step up over “Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones” has less to do with George Lucas writing smart dialogue or actually directing his actors (he either cannot or will not do either) than with the power of a beloved legend finally coming to its conclusion.

Strictly speaking, of course, “Sith” concludes nothing, since it takes place 20 years before the adventures of Luke, Leia and Han Solo. Nevertheless, this film marks the end of a journey that began in 1977 and has, over the years, taken hold on the popular imagination like no other movie franchise.

I was hoping for a movie with genuine dramatic chops. A movie that showed that George Lucas still could make us care. I drew hope from reports that at early screenings grown men were reduced to tears.

Well, maybe on the Planet of the Credulous Fanboys.

While sitting through this movie I felt more obligation than inspiration. And the movie never surprised me. It’s like watching a Christmas pageant with incredibly good production values: You might enjoy the show, but you already know where it’s going.

At least this one goes somewhere. “Phantom Menace” and “Clones” ran around in circles with disposable plots. Their value lay in providing deep background for the George Lucas universe.

“Sith” opens with a dizzying space battle between the Republic and separatist fleets. Hundreds of ships are colliding and blasting away at each other. Either you’ll decide this is incredibly cool or find all this visual clutter nausea-inducing and close your eyes until things settle down.

Anakin (Hayden Christensen) and his mentor, Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor), are still on good terms, but there’s trouble ahead. Denied the status of a full Jedi Master, Anakin gets impatient and is an easy prey for the machinations of Chancellor Palpatine (the oily Ian McDiarmid in the film’s best performance). Palpatine has successfully hidden his evil alter ego, Darth Sidious, but already he’s laying plans to eradicate the Jedis and found his own empire.

There are digressions. A battle on a Wookiee planet (yes, we briefly see our old pal Chewbacca). Another confrontation with Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). A showdown with an android villain called General Grievous (don’t you love these junior-high monikers?) who is far more interesting as a model for a “Star Wars” toy than as a character. At one point Obi-Wan charges into battle on a giant gecko.

Anakin and Padme (Natalie Portman) have managed to keep their marriage a secret, but now that Padme is pregnant (with the future Luke and Leia) they face a crossroads. (“Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo when there was nothing but our love … no plotting, no war.”)

“Revenge of the Sith” completes the big picture and will undoubtedly find favor with a majority of fans.

But it isn’t a very good movie.

Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson are all accomplished actors, yet they give wooden performances under Lucas’ direction. Even Christensen showed in “Shattered Glass” that he can act. Here he mostly looks pouty.

Lucas concentrates so completely on story and the jaw-dropping production values that there’s no room for character development or psychological realism. If we can see that Palpatine is a Machiavellian creep, why can’t a Jedi knight like Anakin figure it out?

The dialogue is less wince-inducing this time but even more pompous — every line is spoken with stentorian coolness. It’s as though anything resembling real dramatic delivery would violate the sanctity of these solemn proceedings.

Much has been made of the film’s darkness and violence. True enough. But what’s really missing is anything like a sense of humor. This joyless effort seems unrelated to the thoroughly enchanting original “Star Wars” of 1977.

That movie was a lark that for all anybody at the time knew might be destined for obscurity. It was meant to be fun and was fueled by a subversive slyness (references to car culture, Westerns and Saturday matinee serials; Harrison Ford’s wondrous insouciance) that nicely balanced its sophomoric moments. That’s why it holds up under repeated viewings.

“Revenge of the Sith” ends by strongly implying that when it comes out on DVD fans will be able to watch all six movies in chronological order, going directly from “Sith” to “A New Hope.”

All that’s going to do, though, is showcase how good the original was and how dreary, self-important and empty the series has become.

While it pisses me off to no end that I can't go to the midnight showing, I am totally in the Star Wars hype. I'm gonna see it this weekend, and I've been viewing the other movies in the past two weeks.

Phantom Menace was not as bad as I remembered. Sure, it's flawed but there some good moments in it. In the scene near the end where Jar-Jar kicks one downed robot and accidently kill other robots with it, if you look in the background, you'll see a gungan fighting one-on-one with a robot and he punches it straight in the face......for some reason, I found this totally hilarious.

They should put this quote on the box of future editions of the DVD.

I got to see it Wednesday night (midnight session) here in Australia, and it was bloody fantastic! So much was happening!! My favourite part was definately Yoda Vs Emperor in the Senate... Fucking awesome, and Yoda pretty much gets owned by Palpy!!

I thought Anakin's turn was done maybe a bit too fast with the timeframe they had, but I think GL did a good job with it regardless. Obi Vs Vader turned out really good too, and the whole lava surfing bit everyone was worried about actually turned out alright. It was more of a stand-off on rocks floating in lava...

A part that really moved me was when the Emperor initiated Order 66, and the clonetroopers turned on the Jedi... Very powerful stuff. Padme's death and the twins birth I thought was really well done, and you really get a sense of loss and darkness when Yoda, Obi and Bail Organa are on the Tantive IV discussing all the shit that just went down.

God damnit my friend just called (and interupted my HOF viewing... pretty good, btw) to remind me he has some sort of work training tomorrow and the earliest we could go with everyone is Saturday. This leaves me in a bind... do I go tomorrow anyway assuming I'll want to see it again with friends on Saturday or just wait it out? I did the former with Spider-Man (and a similar deal with Spider-Man 2 where me and another friend saw it at the previously mentioned cheap downtown theatre before going to see it 'proper' at the Megaplex with a group).

As pumped as I am for this thing, I think I'll just hold off until Saturday. It was only an off chance I found out I'd even have the ability to see it on tomorrow and all along Saturday was the date I had in mind anyway.
