UZI Suicide Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Anyone get it today? I think it's pretty good. I wasn't expecting anything on the level of "The Downward Spiral", but it's better than "The Fragile", IMO. All The Love in the World, The Line Begins to Blur, Every Day is Exactly the Same and Right Where it Belongs are my favorite songs off it so far.
mister foozel Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I've wanted to listen to them before, but don't really know where to start. What kind of music do they play? (I'm assuming metal) Any favorite songs or suggestions?
Nighthawk Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 They play the popular conception of industrial. First two albums are good, after that you don't need anything.
BUTT Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Any favorite songs or suggestions? Head Like A Hole Terrible Lie Sin Wish Last Happiness In Slavery Mr. Self Destruct Heresy March of the Pigs Closer A Warm Place Hurt The Perfect Drug I haven't heard anything from The Fragile that I've liked. I heard a few songs from With Teeth yesterday and they sounded good, but not Trent's best work or anything.
razazteca Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Any favorite songs or suggestions? Lost Highway OST
EricMM Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Wow I really like The Fragile. We're In This Together The Day the World Went Away The Great Below The Pilgrimage Just Like You Imagined No, You Don't Wow those are all off Left. Well, I've enjoyed the whole album, I just never memorized the track names. Anyways I gotta get off my ass and buy this new CD, since I've liked his previous works so much.
Jingus Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 The Fragile? Meh. Personally, I think Reznor is yet another case of an artist blowing their wad too early. He used up all his best ideas in his early work, and then sat around thinking "okay, NOW what the fuck do I do?" for the rest of his career. Sorta like Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Elvis, etc etc etc.
cabbageboy Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Industrial is kind of an abrasive style that is difficult to do, and hard to define really. Imagine someone doing a metal version of techno, with simulated hard guitars, machine sounds, just really abrasive and fucked up sounding stuff. I'd get Pretty Hate Machine for some vital tracks like Head Like a Hole, but man that CD doesn't really stand the test of time as well as Downward Spiral does. It has a slightly dated late 80s synth style. Downward Spiral made my head spin when I first heard it, but be warned, it's REALLY abrasive and full of headache inducing songs if you aren't into this sort of thing.
5_moves_of_doom Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Sorta like Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Elvis, etc etc etc. Yeah Tom sort of blew his load on his piano singer/songwriter tunes too early and then spent the rest of his career idea-less, meandering in that Rain Dogs crap.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Trent Reznor's a pussy. He's "really abraisive" like Marilyn Manson's "really abraisive." If you like corny self-loathing and conveniently packaged nihilism, NIN is for you. My opinion of his worthwhile material is the same as IDRM's. Yeah, I was going to what the fuck Jingus on his Tom Waits mention as well.
Jingus Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 Sorry, I only have a limited selection of Waits' stuff and I was in a really altered state last night, so I take back that comment.
Sideburnious Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 whats with all this Fragile hate? I think its great. The new album's great too.
Gary Floyd Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 I don't have any personal feeling about Reznor or NIN. However, I wouldn't really label them Industrial, since NIN is really more of a Goth Rock band IMO. Groups like Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, and Clock DVA are Industrial. I know, I sound like a purist, but that's just my opinion.
Nighthawk Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 You think you're a purist, I consider Throbbing Gristle to be the only industrial band ever.
mister foozel Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 So its music I might only listen to if I'm baked? Doesn't sound like the kind of music Id listen to on a regular basis is what I'm saying, but I'll give em a listen anyways. Edit: Listened to The Perfect Drug, good vocals..
Edwin MacPhisto Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Jesus & Mary Chain industrial? Fuzzy, but nah. The common opinion is the good one here, first two albums are pretty fun/impressive and "The Perfect Drug" is a pretty neat song. The Fragile is just overdone to all hell and is probably the silliest CD I still own. The new single, at least, is worse than what I remember from that.
Guest Vitamin X Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 My opinion on NIN is the same as Edwin's, especially the part about The Fragile being ridiculously overdone.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 I'd tolerate NIN a lot more if Reznor got someone else to write the lyrics. That said, I thought he was a fucking poet when I was 13 and thought Broken was just about the best thing going.
Matt Young Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 I'm really liking it. I'm actually listening to the streaming audio version on MySpace Music now. I'll be picking it up later today if Wal-Mart has a copy in and they can price match to Best Buy's $9.99, and I can use my gift card.
RedJed Posted May 7, 2005 Report Posted May 7, 2005 Well this is definately their best effort since Spiral, thats for sure. Alot more thought put into this album than Fragile was. More aggressiveness for sure than what I've seen from Reznor in years. If you want a hell of an experience, pick up the dual disc and throw it in a nice 5 channel plus system - I got 7 speakers in my apartment here and most of the tracks on the disc are so well seperated with unique sounds per each output channel that you can't help but enjoy the hell out of the album. I hope more artists go this dual disc route as it will actually make me buy these albums (and they are still cheap if you buy them right away - I got the NIN DD for only $10) v. finding them for free by downloading online.
Matt Young Posted May 8, 2005 Report Posted May 8, 2005 I bought a legit copy, and I'm still really liking the album throughout the third listen. Is it supposed to not come with a booklet or insert of any type?
Guest Crimson Idol Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 I hear its not too good, I tried to get tix to their show in toronto but both dates sold out in under 5 min
Use Your Illusion Posted May 16, 2005 Report Posted May 16, 2005 How old is Reznor now? 40 or something? He sounds even more idiotic than usual.
