I don't really feel like trollin' the movie forum so I'm just going to say this here: People who spend time analyzing/thinking about box office numbers and who don't actually work in the movie industry are fucking weird as shit. I literally cannot even begin to comprehend how someone could bring themselves to care so deeply about something so meaningless.

Why do smart marks talk about the ratings of wrestling shows? It's just a method to gauge (or brag about) your ability to analyze how the public will react to any specific thing. With box office receipts, I talk about it because I hope to someday work in the movie industry. The general daydreamy theory is, if I can correctly guestimate how much money various movies will make, I might have a shot at being able to successfully pander to the masses myself. I don't know if that's what it's like for everyone in there, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something along those lines.

I agree. The reason I post there is to talk about movies and tv shows I love (or don't love), and always saw "look how much this will make" as rather pointless.

 

Earlier this year, I was talking to this guy, and his mom calls him. Well, you can see the conversation is getting stranger, and when he gets off the phone, the conversation went like this

TV ratings discussion is mind-blowingly retarded. However, the one thing I could draw from discussing box office numbers is the possibility of future films being released; i.e., if a certain film like say the upcoming Watchmen movie does particularly well, we can expect to see more of it. I don't think it's necessary to start a thread and an entire discussion around it, though. Furthermore, it's just looking at trends in the industry- but in that regard, some things definitely don't look like they change much if at all.

I agree to a point ... but then I think of a sport that's comparatively struggling, like hockey.

 

I want my favorite sport to get better coverage by ESPN, the leading sports channel in the US. If the Stanley Cup shows improved ratings, it increases the likelihood of ESPN pretending to care about the sport.

 

Once a sport or TV show is 'established', though, I'd agree that it's stupid to care too much about the ratings.

Why not? It's fun to discuss how much a big blockbuster will open, or discuss why a movie didn't meet expectations or blew away expectations. I also enjoyed doing my look at movies that opened with a PSA of less than $1,000- I should start that up again.

 

And it's fun to predict opening weekend numbers, and see how close you get.

Oh by the way, the term Vanity Fair is from Pilgrim's Progress. I believe the magazine (a collection of perfume ads with an editorial slant) took the name from the novel, but Pilgrim's Progress was the first time the term had been used, to refer to an actual fair. It's a really direct allegory, you see, like the guy's name is Christian, and other characters are named things like Worldly Wiseman and Giant Despair. His wife's name is Christiana, that's about as ambiguous as it gets.

I'd heard a few times that it was the second bestselling book after the Bible itself... funny how these things never show up on the Amazon bestseller list, though.

 

But yeah, Vanity Fair is probably the most lasting claim to fame it has.

Vanity Fair's editorial stance is really kind of retarded. A lot of shallow Hollywood liberalism at its worst. Granted, I still read it and find some good articles (Michael Lewis on smuggling Cuban ballplayers in the most recent issue), but it's irritating all the same.

Vanity Fair is one of my favorite magazines, spoken as a man who doesn't read magazines. It'd be that and a bunch of pornos.

 

I read Vanity Fair for years when I lived at home, my mom had a subscription, which I think she inherited from her mom. It's not bad jerkoff material when you're 14. Vanity Fair is actually pretty racy, with legit celebrities. Sometimes the articles are even good. The back page always has a Proust Questionnaire, that's good stuff.
