Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted June 27, 2008 No wonder you're getting into screenwriting. I'm getting inspiration from your dreams now. Although Cameron Diaz is a bad choice; I don't think she's that hot.

Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2008 So, I'm in an online class for the summer and some girl posted the following as her introduction on the site for the first week of class: My name is Jess. I'm a liberal studies major and a student of life. My hobbies/interests are travel, literature, cinema, art, music, herbalism, sewing, sampling exotic foods, contemplating the role of corporate hegemony in society, biology, theology, philosophy, metaphysics, history, geography, astronomy, astrology, mysticism, political science, permaculture, tantric sex, shamanism, linguistics, and macrame. I have an IQ of 140 and I wear my hair in dreadlocks. My favourite colour is green and my favourite band is Pink Floyd. .... About half of that is normal, and the other half is just fucking OUT there. Oh, nobody with a 140 IQ has, does, or ever will go to Portland State. What, that's the first time you've run into a precocious gifted girl-turned-knowitall hippie chick? I've known at least a dozen women just like that. I end up escaping by befriending one of the attendants, an anthropomorphic bucket of slime known as Filth the Worthless. Unsure of Filth's gender, I have sex with it anyway, then betray its trust and fashion a crude bomb out of it using jailhouse Kool Aid. . . . I really gotta see your first movie whenever it eventually, inevitably gets made.

Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Why do smart marks talk about the ratings of wrestling shows? It's just a method to gauge (or brag about) your ability to analyze how the public will react to any specific thing. With box office receipts, I talk about it because I hope to someday work in the movie industry. The general daydreamy theory is, if I can correctly guestimate how much money various movies will make, I might have a shot at being able to successfully pander to the masses myself. I don't know if that's what it's like for everyone in there, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something along those lines.

That would fall under the label of "no shit". Why do you care? People want to guess how successful stuff is gonna be, that happens in every single industry on the planet, especially ones like the popular media where they talk about this shit on primetime television every week. PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 I just think it's weird/sad that ppl in the movie forum here spend as much/more time talking about how much money some stupid blockbuster is going to make this weekend then actually engaging with and discussing movies themselves. It just seems like such a pointless, dead-end endeavor.
Retard Girl 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Why do smart marks talk about the ratings of wrestling shows? ..... and the ratings come in for each segment. that's the part i don't understand. yeah, the ratings for the first hour were x.x and the second hour were x.x. that i understood. but this every segment, every 15 minutes, that's just really...anal. not even geeky in a cool way. it just seems desperae. It just seems like such a pointless, dead-end endeavor. I agree. The reason I post there is to talk about movies and tv shows I love (or don't love), and always saw "look how much this will make" as rather pointless. Earlier this year, I was talking to this guy, and his mom calls him. Well, you can see the conversation is getting stranger, and when he gets off the phone, the conversation went like this Me: Who was that? Him: It was my mom. Me: What did she want? Him: She wanted to borrow some of the porno tapes I own.

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted July 1, 2008 TV ratings discussion is mind-blowingly retarded. However, the one thing I could draw from discussing box office numbers is the possibility of future films being released; i.e., if a certain film like say the upcoming Watchmen movie does particularly well, we can expect to see more of it. I don't think it's necessary to start a thread and an entire discussion around it, though. Furthermore, it's just looking at trends in the industry- but in that regard, some things definitely don't look like they change much if at all.

It drives me up the fucking wall when people start discussing things like NBA Finals ratings. There's just no reason for fans to care. I agree to a point ... but then I think of a sport that's comparatively struggling, like hockey. I want my favorite sport to get better coverage by ESPN, the leading sports channel in the US. If the Stanley Cup shows improved ratings, it increases the likelihood of ESPN pretending to care about the sport. Once a sport or TV show is 'established', though, I'd agree that it's stupid to care too much about the ratings.

Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 Which is a more well known Christian allegory... the Chronicles of Narnia or the Pilgrim's Progress? I've seen both described as "arguably" the most well known Christian allegory. I anticipate this being a hotly debated issue.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2008 I'm not sure that's something that could really be debated. I mean, unless you conducted some kind of wide-reaching survey. But then you'd have a concrete answer and thus no debate. Furthermore,

It's fun to discuss how much a big blockbuster will open, or discuss why a movie didn't meet expectations or blew away expectations. I also enjoyed doing my look at movies that opened with a PSA of less than $1,000- I should start that up again. And it's fun to predict opening weekend numbers, and see how close you get. Kinetic 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Tonight at the store, a very cute girl told me that she loved my hairdo. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Oh by the way, the term Vanity Fair is from Pilgrim's Progress. I believe the magazine (a collection of perfume ads with an editorial slant) took the name from the novel, but Pilgrim's Progress was the first time the term had been used, to refer to an actual fair. It's a really direct allegory, you see, like the guy's name is Christian, and other characters are named things like Worldly Wiseman and Giant Despair. His wife's name is Christiana, that's about as ambiguous as it gets. I'd heard a few times that it was the second bestselling book after the Bible itself... funny how these things never show up on the Amazon bestseller list, though. But yeah, Vanity Fair is probably the most lasting claim to fame it has.
Ketamine Disaster 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 I always assumed it came from the Paul McCartney song off Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. Then again, I don't read perfume ads.
Guest !!! Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Vanity Fair's editorial stance is really kind of retarded. A lot of shallow Hollywood liberalism at its worst. Granted, I still read it and find some good articles (Michael Lewis on smuggling Cuban ballplayers in the most recent issue), but it's irritating all the same. Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Vanity Fair is one of my favorite magazines, spoken as a man who doesn't read magazines. It'd be that and a bunch of pornos. I read Vanity Fair for years when I lived at home, my mom had a subscription, which I think she inherited from her mom. It's not bad jerkoff material when you're 14. Vanity Fair is actually pretty racy, with legit celebrities. Sometimes the articles are even good. The back page always has a Proust Questionnaire, that's good stuff.
