tommytomlin 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2005 Chaos as blasts rock London tube, bus London's entire Underground railway network has been suspended after a blast and another "incident" shook the system, leaving several people wounded, officials and rescue workers said. In a separate incident, an explosion also ripped through a bus at Tavistock Square in the centre of London, just minutes after the blast rocked the Underground, a police spokesman said. Police closed off the area around Tavistock Square. A policeman, who declined to be identified, said there had been an explosion on a bus. "We heard a big boom and we were all told to evacuate the building," an officer worker said. There was no word on casualties from the bus explosion. Bus union sources said they had received reports of explosions on a total of three buses in central London. People were seen streaming out of a London Underground station covered with blood. Similar scenes were reported by witnesses outside other stations in the capital. The whole of the system was shut down and major thoroughfares were closed. The cause of the incident, which occurred at rush-hour on the Underground network, was as yet unknown, although a massive power outage was reported. "There have been some casualties and this has been declared as a major incident," a spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan Police said. Emergency services rushed to the Aldgate East Underground station where police reported one incident at 8:59am local time. Witnesses said passengers were seen emerging from the station at Aldgate East with blood on their faces and their clothes ripped. "There were people streaming out of Algate station covered in blood," 27-year-old Kate Heywood said, on her way to work. A Reuters correspondent at Oxford Circus station, at the heart of the underground system, heard an announcement over the public-address system saying: "A power outage has occurred London-wide. All train services are suspended." A station official said: "All the power has gone down. I don't know when it'll come back." Britain's Scotland Yard said it has received reports of "multiple explosions" across London. "At 8:50am [local time] we were called to Aldgate station to assist the City of London Police and British Transport Police regarding an incident on the Underground system," a spokeswoman said. "There have been further reports of multiple explosions in London. It is too early to say what has caused these explosions. "There has been a confirmed explosion on a bus at Tavistock Place. "The Metropolitan Police, British Transport Police and City of London Police are working together to ensure officers are deployed to each scene. "There have been reports of numerous casualties but it is too early to say numbers at this stage," she said. Kings Cross Station The BBC's Mark Easton describes the scene at Kings Cross Station. "What I did see was half a dozen people who, and this chimes in with other reports, who have blackened faces, and in some cases I saw head wounds," he said. "In fact I've just seen one young man who was being treated and a huge bandage being put around his head - it looked to me as though he had a fairly minor headwound. "There are a number of other people who were standing around and sitting around. "But they all had this tell-tale black complexion - it looked to me like soot rather than a burn or anything else." - AFP/Reuters http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200507/s1409463.htm These are all very early reports, first fatalities have been reported. This is horrible.

London has absolutely ground to a halt right now – without the underground (and, to a lesser extent, the bus services), navigating London is utterly impossible. This has less to do with the Olympic bid and more to do with the G8 and the fact that most of our resources are holed up in Edinburgh to fend off those fucking idiots who are "demonstrating their public right to protest" – thus, leavingour capitol completely open to attack. Not that there's really anything you can do to protect a mass transit system like London's – or New York's, Paris' or any other system, for that matter. The only plus point is that we've been dealing with terrorist attacks for decades, so at least people are smart enough not to panic, and savvy enough to know what to do (people on the streets were dragging tourists off the roads after the bus blew up in Tavistock Square, well aware of the risk of secondary blasts). Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2005 Group Claims Responsiblity CAIRO, Egypt - A group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" posted a claim of responsibility for Thursday's blasts in London, saying they were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. ADVERTISEMENT The authenticity of the message could not be immediately confirmed. The statement, which also threatened attacks in Italy and Denmark, was published on a Web site popular with Islamic militants, according to Elaph, a secular Arabic-language news Web site, and Der Spiegel magazine in Berlin, which published the text on their Web sites. "Rejoice, Islamic nation. Rejoice, Arab world. The time has come for vengeance against the Zionist crusader government of Britain in response to the massacres Britain committed in Iraq and Afghanistan," said the statement, translated by The Associated Press in Cairo. The AP was unable to access the Web site where it was posted, which was closed quickly after the reports. The group al-Qaida in Europe claimed responsibility for the last major terror attack in Europe: a string of bombs that hit commuter trains in Madrid, Spain in March 2004, killing 191 people. Two days after that attack, a video was found in a trash can outside a Madrid mosque with a statement purported to be from the group's spokesman, called by the nickname "Abu Dujan al Afghani." In the new statement, the group said "the heroic mujahedeen carried out a blessed attack in London, and now Britain is burning with fear and terror, from north to south, east to west." "We warned the British government and the British people repeatedly. We have carried out our promise and carried out a military attack in Britain after great efforts by the heroic mujahedeen over a long period to ensure its success." "We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all crusader governments that they will receive the same punishment if they do not withdraw their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan," the statement went on. It was signed "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe." What fucking crap, saying it was the U.K's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan was the reason. Al-Qeada has been operating for more then the past 5 years. If anybody buys this crap needs their head examined, 5 years ago it was for Americas involvment in Suadi Arabia. May those who committed these deeds, those who planned it and those who support these fuck heads rot in hell for all eternity
redbaron29 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2005 Well According to reports a group called "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Now is it just me or does that sound like a bogus name. Something is really fishy about this whole situation. Regardless God speed the victims in this tragedy. Prime Time Andrew Doyle 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2005 You would assume it was not the IRA. If that Secret Organisation of Al-Qeada arent the real culprits, would you think it would be sfae to assume that it was the real al-Qeada? And if so, would they claim responsibility, because if I remember correctly, didn't it take a while before bin Laden came out and definatley say that it was them. Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted July 7, 2005 (edited) BBC's coverage That's probably your best resource. I'd agree it's something to do with either the G8 or the Olympics. This is awful, obviously, but unfortunately (and please, don't take me to be cold hearted, I'm anything but) unless you turn a country into a police state this sort of thing happens. Good luck to everyone on the board in London Edited July 7, 2005 by Masked Man of Mystery
