What's the point in changing up shit, since the bulk of the people who'd be interested in seeing the movie are people who grew up watching the cartoons in the 80's?  Sure, Soundwave may be outdated, but who cares?

Right now the bulk of the people interested are fans. But, if they are releasing this on July 4th and Spielberg has said that they want this to be a franchise then they will have to change some things to get mainstream America interested or it will bomb. Which translates to no tape decks in '07.

Edit: Also, you know there will be a huge push with toys and videogames aimed at kids that will require them to update things from the 80's.

I am looking forward to this movie, but am not fooling myself into thinking that it will be better than the original movie.

No tape decks...fine....BUT A HELICOPTER!?

His name is "SOUND...WAVE"

Unless it's an Apocalypse Now copter with "Ride of the Valkyries" constantly jamming...well I still won't like it, but not as much as I hate it now.

Megatron: I love the smell of energon in the morning. It smells like...victory over those Autobot fools!

There's a freaky 2 minute interview with Speilberg on Transformerslive.com where he talks about buying the toys back in 80's and being facinated by them. I'm not sure if he's not BSing (then again why would he). Wonder if he saw the animated movie...

Prolly not, because if he did he'd realize that he has A LOT to live up to.

Hrmmm...Soundwave as a chopper...imagine how different Predator would have been if the helicopter was a Transformer?

Ahnuld: "RUN! GET TO THE CHOPPER!"

Chopper: "FOOLISH HUMANS!" **fires lasers**

what saddens me the most about Soudwave not being a tape deck is that we probably won't have Rumble or Laserbeak...to me they were two of the most essential Decepticons, both very useful and loyal to the cause, involved inpretty much every Decepticon operation...I guess Ravage was decent as well...sure they could still have them in there, but it's just not the same when Soundwave isn't playing mother for them...

At least he's not an iPod.

Or a street lamp, like he was on Cybertron in the first ep of the original series.

That's one of those things that you see for one episode and one episode only, like certain characters flying, having gadgets hidden somewhere (like a convenient buzzsaw to cut through a rope) or something like that. Like Hot Rod in the movie had that thing that came over his eyes and he zoomed in on the shuttle coming to Earth. Haven't seen it before or since or on anybody else.

Still though, a Helicopter IS still better than an IPod or a Street Lamp.

one thing I hated about the cartoon was the lack of attention to detail: While on Cybertron, they transformed into all sorts of futuristic spacey things (Bumblebee was a saucer shaped hovercraft, Wheeljack and Jazz were fat, quatty hovercrafts, the seeker jets were cone shaped flying things, etc.) but when they were in robot form, they ALREADY resembled their Earth transformations...the lone exception was Laserbeak..

They wanted you to relate to their "humanoid" forms easier, I suppose.

Of course, things got REALLY wonky in Season 2, when the female Autobots, who never appeared on Earth, still looked somewhat like Earth vehicles.

And here's another thought I had: why were there never any female Decepticons? It would have been interesting to see what the personality of one would be like.

Here is a fairly accurate "Street Lamp Soundwave"
