Si82 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2005 I was watching "The Royal Tenenbaums" earlier tonight and thought it's a good film I couldn't help thinking I prefered "Bottle Rocket" and that is has to be my favourite Wes Anderson film. So I thought I could make a poll to see what you guys think. As for my choice. I just feel that everything about "Bottle Rocket" is so well done. From the casting, to the script, to the performance everything is great for the film and I don't think he's manged to top it yet.
Mik 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 Great topic. I love all four of them with the only clear decision I could make would be to place Rushmore in 4th. I voted for Zissou just because I found myself silently chuckling at worst, laughing out loud at best throughout the entire movie. It just all "clicked" for me. Bottle Rocket would be a really, close 2nd. My friends and I watched this movie too many times through college and memorized probably too much of it. "Say it again. Say it one more time. You're out! You're out. And I'm out too. There's no gang. How does an asshole like Bob end up with such a nice kitchen anyway?" Great scene, great movie, but I still like Zissou a little bit better. I'm waiting for Anderson's next.
Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2005 I've honestly never seen Bottle Rocket. I'd have to say The Royal Tenenbaums. There's so much brilliant dialogue in there, with Hackman delivering it all perfectly.

Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 Rushmore or Bottle Rocket, depending on the day. I voted for Rushmore.

DMann2003 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 Gosh I just don't know, I love them all pretty much the same, I'd probably say Rushmore thought because it was the 1st I saw and I identified a bit with Max Fisher.

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 My problem with The Royal Tenenbaums is that it feels incomplete sometimes. Does anyone else know what I mean, without me having to go into so much detail? Great use of Elliott Smith during the scene where Richie tries to kill himself, but why does he say he's going to do it tomorrow then just do it then? Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 Maybe it was 11:59 and during that time period it passed over into tommorow.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 Never thought of that. I checked director commentary and Wes talked about how people ask him, then he just gave some mumbling nebulous response about how it was a line from a movie he liked.
notJames 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 I chose The Royal Tenenbaums. All four of them were well done, but Tenenbaums just seemed to affect me more. I really loved the family dynamic, the way everyone interacted with each other, especially when they didn't get along.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 I would've liked it better if the parents were both geniuses along with their children, rather than the mother just forcing them to study a lot.
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 I went with Bottle Rocket, but the 3 I have seen (havent' gotten around to Life Aquatic yet) are all very well done.
Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2005 Tenanbaums has one of the more weirdly emotional moments for me at the end of it when Stiller looks at Hackman all choked up and says "I've had a rough year, dad."

The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2005 I don't know, really smart parents tend to have really smart kids, and it works in Infinite Jest just fine. I just think it would have been better if the parents were eccentric geniuses as well, rather than just sorta smart and successful.
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2005 Wes Anderson - the most deserving of all directors who make shit at the box office with the most boring talent. I hated Tenenbaums, but every person I know likes it. And its not a "they're smart moviegoers" thing. They usually hate intelligent flicks. I know the movie has some good characterization and all, and a great family dynamic, I just hate every single actor/actress in the movie. I'm in the major minority, but I think the movie is for fucking dweebs. Didn't see Life Aquatic yet, unfortunately. I remember it was out during December '04, and the stoners I was with picked the useless BLADE: TRINITY to go see Triple H speak about the size of his penis, instead. Sigh. Would have thought that Murray would be awesome in it and I look forward to seeing if it holds up. Sigh. I found Rushmore to be decent, btw. A good 2 AM flick that you rant about to your friends. The type they'll watch and say "Decent", but not find your recommendation mind-blowing. Because the movie isn't. It's a decent movie. Regardless, no Wes Anderson movie should be seen in a theatre. UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2005 Actually, your reply makes no sense. For you to "see it coming", it would mean that a lot of people share the opinion, and you think they're wrong. I started the phrase off with "I'm in the major MINORITY...". See, I was right all along. You and a lot of people think the movie was good because you perceive it as smart, just like you think your reply was witty. In the end, both suck. The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2005 Tenenbaums is the best. As much as I liked his first 3...I really couldn't stand the Life Aquatic.
Annabelle 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2005 life aquatic is so unappreciated it hurts. so much greatness. visually stunning. amazing soundtrack. dare i say, bill murray at his best. sigor ros in the background while they are coming to grips with everything that has occured is so powerful. actually, i dont care everyone hates it, it can be my favorite alone. its better that way. cinematically lazy viewers hate this movie. i pity them. after that, its tough to pick a favorite. all have their own intracancies that draw my brain to them. can't say schoolboy angry man symdrome is worse than gene hackman calling danny glover COLTRANE, but can't say eli cash is better than scwartzmann telling dennice the menace that eh got a handjob from his momma in the back of her jagyaah. bottle rocket is last. luke wilson's hair was so 1993. If you didn't, You - Sense Of Entitlement + A Few Years, JaxlMorrison, would show up and say it. I don't perceive it as smart. I just thought it was a slightly flawed but overall superior film. Just shut the fuck up already.

Precious Roy 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2005 I thought if anything, given the subject matter, that Tenenbaums was overly simplistic and probably the least "smart" of his films. I also don't get how someone can say that only dorks like that movie and then turn around and praise Rushmore, which from my experience carrys a rabidly dorky fanbase, whereas Tenenbaums has more people who saw it and liked it but don't carry it around like a badge. My vote goes to The Life Aquatic BTW, brilliant...

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted July 27, 2005 Rushmore is my favorite, but I've been meaning to see The Life Aquatic again. I loved a good amount of it, but overall it left me a little flat. Jeff Goldblum was on fire. Banky's right, though; the soundtrack's gorgeous. Of course, when you're basing half of it on Bowie, tough to fuck up.
