Danville_Wrestling Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 I was just watching my copy of SummerSlam 1989 last night and it was quite dull after the opener Hart Foundation-Brain Busters and the Rockers/Santana-Rogeaus/Martel match. However, the Ultimate Warrior-Rick Rude match had me laughing like crazy after the opening seconds when the Warrior is using the title belt to hit Rude on the floor and Ventura goes apeshit over it demanding a DQ. Shiavone tries to justify it like it's perfectly legal b/c it happened on the outside of the ring and Ventura basically rips him a new one yelling about if Warrior had a gun and shot Rude on the floor if that would be legal. Just a REALLY funny exchange that I totally forgot about. Anyone agree?
Jericholic82 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 I agree, it's classic stuff. Ventura sounded genuinely pissed and poor Tony sounded scared.
Guest korndogg123 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Yeah, I was just watching this show on tape last week! Actually I watched a few of my old WWF and WCW PPVs on tape. After doing this I came to the conclusion that Jesse Ventura was the best color commentator EVER. One minute he's a calm, unbiased man complimenting both the faces and heels for their nice maneuvers and the next minute he's rippin the shit out of the refs, Monsoon, Schiavone, and anyone else he could for "siding" with the "cheating faces." And yes, I too was cracking up during the Warrior-Rude title match at SS '89. Also on that show he did some more of his ripping on the Rockers for their "illegal double teams." I thought Wrestlemania V was better however. For one Ventura was hyping the IC title match all night and seemed like he marked out when Rude won w/ Heenan's help. Plus his commentary during the Hogan-Savage match was great where he repeatedly called Hogan the chump and ripped Elizabeth to shreds. After that match Ventura said he and Monsoon were even in that Rude won the IC title while Hogan won the WWF title. And also during that show Gene Okerlund announced Hogan's return to the movies in No Holds Barred and after that Ventura literally snapped and it sounded like he was legit pissed off, not that I can blame him. And of course it's always fun to hear him call the Bushwhackers the marching morons. Then also in that glory year that was Ventura, at Survivor Series he goes off during the Hulkamaniacs-Million $ Team match when Hebner DQs Zeus and the Powers of Pain for kicking Hogan's ass and Ventura was doing a worked shoot about how the ref was saving the hero because he was getting destroyed. Also on that show during the Warriors-Heenan Family match he was telling Monsoon how much he'd love it if Bobby Heenan somehow survived the wrath of the Ultimate Warrior. Ironically during all three shows Jesse repeatedly ripped referee Joey Marella, Monsoon's son, a new one. Long story short, as I mentioned Ventura was the best color man EVER.
Danville_Wrestling Posted August 5, 2005 Author Report Posted August 5, 2005 Yea, I definetly agree with you. I have all of 1989 PPV's on tape except the Royal Rumble and Ventura is golden in WM, SS, and SuSeries. I'd say the WWE should try to get him back somehow in the booth b/c a "cool heel" announcer is what the WWE rights now to boost its lagging commentary.
Danville_Wrestling Posted August 5, 2005 Author Report Posted August 5, 2005 Yea, in 1989. I was surprised when I bought a copy of SummerSlam 1989 from my local video store and Tony freakin' Schiavone was like "AWAY WE GO!"
Guest J0bber Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Schiavone isn't too horrible of a commentator when he is paired with Ventura. Even in the early 90's in WCW, their on air arguments were funny.
Tony149 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 Schiavone isn't too horrible of a commentator when he is paired with Ventura. Even in the early 90's in WCW, their on air arguments were funny. I agree. Ventura was great with everybody he worked with, kept them on their toes throughout. Another classic Ventura moment was during the Hollywood Blondes-Ric Flair/Arn Anderson Clash 23 match, which sadly got edited out of the Austin DVD, where he cracks up when Austin makes fun of Arn's belly.
The Tino Standard Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 "Win if you can, lose if you must, but ALWAYS CHEAT." The Body rules the school.
MikeJordan23 Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 Tony Schiavone was in WWE? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yup. For about a year. Just like Hebner used to ref. in WCW/NWA.
Guest The Mandingo Warrior Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 "She's Goin' After His Wallet!!!!" (10 points for reference!) One of my favorite Jesse lines. Another classic is at the end of Wrestlemania 5 where jesse is commentating on the replay of Hulk hitting Savage with the big boot/leg drop: "There you see Hogan hitting Macho with the big Boot" "Then Bouncing off the ropes and hitting the leg drop" "PULLING THE TIGHTS!!" "and getting the win" Classic stuff.
MillenniumMan831 Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 "She's Goin' After His Wallet!!!!" (10 points for reference!) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Elizabeth getting the keys to the handcuffs from Slick at Survivor Series 1988 Another great Ventura rant came during the entire Super Posedown at Royal Rumble 1989. Monsoon: Hands down winner right there. Ventura: SHUT UP Monsoon! Nobody's won nothin yet!
Guest korndogg123 Posted August 6, 2005 Report Posted August 6, 2005 From Survivor Series '89: "This is horrible Monsoon. First the referee disqualifies Zeus because he beats up Hogan. Now he disqualifies the Powers of Pain because they beat up Hogan too!"
ChrisMWaters Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 My favorite line...from either WrestleMania IV or V... "You know you've been hanging around McMahon too long. He's a bad influence on anybody."
CanadianGuitarist Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 I don't remember what exactly the conversation was, but it was from a SNME in 91, after Warrior accidentally clothesline Hogan. "I KNEW THEIR EGOS COULDN'T CO-EXIST, MCMAHON!
zyn081 Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 This thread answers a solution to one of the WWEs problems: BRING BACK VENTURA! Hell tear anybody to shreads off the current commentary team.
Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 I liked during the Ulimate Posedown where Jesse Ventura blurts out, "what about his face? The face is a part of the body too!"
snuffbox Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 This thread answers a solution to one of the WWEs problems: BRING BACK VENTURA! Hell tear anybody to shreads off the current commentary team. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I remember when he came back for SummerSlam '99 (when he was Governor of MN) he announced a match on Raw. Still awesome then. He cant be too busy these days...
Hunter's Torn Quad Posted August 7, 2005 Report Posted August 7, 2005 Ventura started slipping shortly after entering WCW, and by the end of 1992 he was parody of himself. Listening to Ventura was excruciating post-1992. I'd rather never have to listen to the guy commentating again.
alfdogg Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 From WM2, when Hogan is choking Bundy with his rib tape Jesse: Now what do you have to say, Alfred? Alfred: It's tit for tat, Jesse, what's good for the goose is good for the gander! Jesse: I figured an Englishman would come up with something like that! Elvira: Jealous because you don't have a cartoon show, Jesse? Jesse: Don't you get on my case either, Elvira, or you won't go out with me later tonight!
Jericholic82 Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 You also gotta love Jesse At the WMS where Hogan retained/won the world title, getting so angry and threatening to return to the ring and destroy Hulk. at 2, he said it after the bundy match and Elvira replied "If you win, I'll go out with you"
Danville_Wrestling Posted August 8, 2005 Author Report Posted August 8, 2005 What I always liked about Ventura is that when he said something it was meaningful. In other words, if he didn't have anything to say he didn't say anything at all. He wasn't like the color commentators today who try to interrupt or fill in any "blank" spots on the telecast with some dialogue. An example is SummerSlam 1989 in the six-man tag match btw Rockers/Santana vs. Martel/Rogeaus where he lets Schiavone do a lot of play-by-play and only commentating when big things are going on or when he wants to rant against the Rockers "illegal" double-teams. Plus, since he was reserved in comments when Ventura went on rants it made them that much better.
Drury37 Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 Another classic one was at WM VI when during the mixed tag match Sherri goes to bodyslam Sapphire and she falls on her and Monsoon goes too much weight and Jesse cracks up and says something to the affect of oh you got that right. Jesse and Heenan are without a doubt the two best heel commentators of all time. Thanks.

Either way, Ventura Parody > Jerry Lawler/Jim Ross
MillenniumMan831 Posted August 8, 2005 Report Posted August 8, 2005 It was obvious that Jesse was a huge mark for Rick Rude, Vader, and The Hollywood Blondes in 1993 as he came alive for their matches and took it easy for most of the rest of the card.
PLAGIARISM! Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 As for biased face announcers, Monsoon takes the cake, I believe it was him who continually justified face cheating because 'It's survivor series'.
