Pierce Brosnan Out As James Bond, 007

A single, surprising phone call and it was over. That's how Pierce Brosnan says he learned that his services as James Bond would no longer be required.

"One phone call, that's all it took!" the 52-year-old actor tells Entertainment Weekly magazine in its Aug. 19 issue.

Brosnan starred in four Bond films. He says that before they stopped negotiations, the producers had invited him back for a fifth time.

"You know, the movie career for me really started with Bond," says Brosnan, acknowledging that by the time "GoldenEye" premiered in 1995, he was already 42.

He then starred as 007 in "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997), "The World Is Not Enough" (1999) and "Die Another Day" (2002).

His departure from the role was a "titanic jolt to the system," says Brosnan, followed by "a great sense of calm."

"I thought. ... I can do anything I want to do now. I'm not beholden to them or anyone. I'm not shackled by some contracted image. So there was a sense of liberation."

Brosnan says he's grateful to have had the role, but adds: "It never felt real to me. I never felt I had complete ownership over Bond. Because you'd have these stupid one-liners — which I loathed — and I always felt phony doing them."

He plays a foulmouthed, skirt-chasing hit man in the upcoming film "The Matador."

"(For this) to come on the heels of my departure from the world of Bond is sweet grace, to play this one as a farewell to that chapter in time — it certainly wasn't planned."

So who do you think will be the next James Bond?

Clint Howard.

He was 42 when he started playing 007?

I've read Brosnan would've played Bond almost a decade sooner, but he couldn't get out of his "Remington Steele" contract. (Does anyone besides me even remember that show?)

Someone 35 and over.

James Bond is an older man/character in the books and stories. Unless the studio decides to "revisit" a younger version of Bond in his early days (please don't...) then the guy casted as Bond needs to be late 30's/early 40's at least.

Well, if they do the re-visiting his past thing, maybe the movies won't focus so much on the gadgets and more on the spy-element.

Yeah I will go with Owen...I've heard some say Hugh Jackman but I think he's already too known as Wolverine. Owen is at the point where he's getting reasonably known but not so much that his persona would overwhelm the Bond character.

Clive Owen has no charisma, I'm sorry to say. He has the look and even the accent, but he puts me to sleep.

Julian McMahon, on the other hand, would own the character.

I dunno, Clive Owen looks too "heelish" to play a guy that's supposed to be suave, sophisticated and all that good shit...people said Ewan McGregor in the past, and while I like him, I think he looks to cheery and smiley...maybe Jude Law, but then again, I just can't see him kicking anyone's ass...

Owen's the kinda guy who'd be standing there.. calm, cool and collected, drinking a martini (shaken, not stirred).. and the next thing you know you're on the floor with a light bulb in your mouth and he's punching you in the face. Awww, yeah!

Jason Statham is cool but I don't think he's really a very suave, ladies man type. He looks more like an English Bruce Willis

What happened to that Daniel Craig dude anyway? He was rumored for Bond a while ago and I didn't think that made much sense.
