WWE's Shopzone is having some sweet offers lately regarding DVDs. Most of them offer either a T-shirt or a special magazine or the like in addition to a DVD, and the prices are terrific. Makes me wanna wait to see what offer do they come up with for the Bret Hart DVD.

That mini-Legends book was included at Best Buy so I picked it up today, looks cool can't wait for the Bret set and hoping we see a Roddy Piper set soon.

I looked at the dvd and it was the same as the one at Best Buy.

I picked up the DVD earlier at Best Buy and they must be using that same case for the DVD/Mini-book combo as perhaps the rumored 3 disc set at FYE or whatever it is from, as the box holding the stuff itself on the back says the runnning time is 8.5 hours and when you look at the DVD itself inside the box, the running time total is only 6 hours or something. Confusing.

Someone over at DVDTalk posted saying that they bought it at FYE, and it didn't come with a bonus DVD, so that's that.

I have only watched about 10 or 15 minutes of this DVD and I can already tell, of course we really already knew it, that Jake Roberts is truly a masterful storyteller. So far this DVD is just him sitting there, talking about his life growing up, and its some of the most interesting, heartbreaking, and well told stuff that I've ever heard. I haven't even really gotten into the part where, you know, he talks about his wrestling career yet.

 

If the rest of the DVD is this solid, then it will be without a doubt, one of the best DVD releases ever.

Oh lord this is a great DVD.

 

The Honky Tonk Man guitar shot on The Snake Pit is one of the funniest things ever, I haven't seen that in years. They play it over and over again, even in slow motion.

 

That DDT to Steamboat, holy crap was that a sick spot. The sound it made, and then seeing Jake pick him up and put him in the ring, it was just disgusting.

 

It's also great seeing them take yet another shot at Warrior, I can never get tired of that.

So should I just get this at BB and not even bother with FYE? That Shop Zone thing is tempting because I've wanted that shirt for YEARS. Just never wanted to pay the insane eBay prices to get it.

I don't think there is a bonus disc at FYE, so just pick it up anywhere. I will say this though, I wish I had bought this off of WWE.com since I paid $19.99 for it at Best Buy, and I could have given just a few more bucks for that awesome shirt. That's one hell of a deal if you ask me.

 

This is one of those DVDs that can be looked at as a must own in my opinion. The main feature is one of those that I think all wrestling fans should watch. Not just because of his battles with demons, although that's a huge part of it, but just so wrestling fans who might not know a lot about the guy, can see one of the true greats in psychology and on the stick of all time. The main feature is great, possibly the best one WWE has produced yet.

 

Now, on to all of the special features.

picked mine up at FYE today. appears to be the same 2 discer that is being sold everywhere else. I was a huge Jake mark back in the day, so this thing is pure gold to me. Im not sure how it would play to those that only had a passing interest in him though.

I think that for those who just have a passing interest in the guy, this DVD will make them think a hell of a lot more about the guy, and will get them interested enough to the point where they want to see more of his work.

You can tell that was a real guitar since only a small piece of it came off unlike JJ's expolding guitars.

Watched this last night and wow - what to say. I was shocked that Jake was so open as much as he is, not sure WHY that is other than he just doesnt give a shit anymore about anything, or else maybe he was on something, much like he seemed to open up when he got high during Beyond the Mat. I could be totally off there but he just seened to act a little weird at times, and the stories about his family - not sure what to believe there, but regardless, very fucked up/surreal indeed.

 

One part I found interesting was the stuff about when Jake was back in 96 and how he was clean and yet the company had to play off it and how it affected him. Makes you really feel for him, in a sense.

 

Havent gotten to the extras yet other than the Steamboat-Jake match from Toronto in 86. Solid match for sure.

It could be folklore, but heel Jake would get pops against Savage during his heel reign as IC champ too(that match should be on there from snme).

This was addressed in the bonus features. Both Hogan and Jake both basically said that "it was going against the grain" to actually program a Jake-Hogan feud, considering the pop Jake got from that Snake Pit segment.

 

Not sure about the Jake-Savage stuff - I know back in the day I did go to a few house shows they worked a program on and Jake was actually getting great heat, post cobra-bite on Savage.

No, I'm talking about Jake The Snake against Savage in 1986 on SNME for the IC title in a weird heel vs. heel match. Ventura even had to comment that he was surprised the crowd "was for The Snake". It was funny because that same day on Superstars Savage did the infamous attack on Steamboat with the ring bell. I think the match was taped before that incident, but I could be wrong.

 

So, I wonder if Hogan felt it was going against the grain when Steamboat and Savage stole the show at Mania 3?

I'll get this at a later time, but I have to point out Vince McMahon's hypocrisy involved in this DVD.

 

 

Back when "Beyond the Mat" came out, Vince McMahon publicly knocked the movie, one of his knocks was that it exploited Jake's drug addiction as one of the selling points of the movie.

I just finished the feature and I felt it was very well done. Jake has always been a great storyteller (although there were a few times he mumbled and I was confused by what he was saying), I liked how they kept the "other" views limited to about 6-8 people (mainly, Prichtard, Dibiase, Steamboat, Ross, Okerlund, Vince and Animal). As opposed to other dvd's that had multiple people speaking.

 

Nothing groundbreaking from this DVD, mostly things we already knew. The best parts were the side stories, I loved the Dick Ebersol story and the ECW cameo story, I couldn't believe Heyman got Roberts the check, I would've loved to hear Roberts chew Heyman out for a bounced check.

 

I'm getting to the matches right now and I'll be honest, When I think of "great wrestlers", Jake Roberts won't be springing to mind very fast but I'll be damned if Jake isn't among the best, if not THE best @ controlling a crowd and making little movements, count.

 

I'll voice my disapointment in the lack of an actual Savage/Roberts match. I'm shocked Vince resisted the urge to gloat during Savage gets bitten section. I don't get why the bothered putting the HH97 run-in on the second disc...when the entire thing, im guessing was already shown in the feature. They did this with Warrior's dvd as well. They need to stop it.

 

Over-all, Not a bad DVD but not something that'll get repeat viewings. Hearing Jake's story again isn't my idea of fun.

That is one aspect today that new guys just aren't learning in "wrestling school". Back in the day, quite a few guys knew how to make the little movements count, but yes, Jake is one of the best of all time in that department.
