Downhome 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2005 Oh wow, what an episode last night! "You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Raging Bull, Pacino." "Oh yeah, Karate Kid...the Hillary Swank version." "I'm going to do Dwight a favor. Keep me as his emergency contact and I can call the hospital. That way, we can cut out the middle man." "Would I rather be feared or loved? Ummm, easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me." And many other great lines.
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2005 Downhome rules, as did this episode. The Raging Bull/Pacino line was my favorite. I loved the look on Kevin's face as the elevator was closing on the way to the dojo. Classic.

Downhome 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2005 This is a great site: http://www.theofficequotes.com/ From B.J. Novak's (Ryan) blog: http://www.tvguide.com/News/Insider/?cmsGu...9-55C1E6579C99} Some background on the karate fighters you will see in this episode: Steve Carell: Steve Carell has no background in karate, and, fortunately, it shows. (Steve does have an impressive background in ice hockey, which we have not yet figured out how to factor into an episode about office life. But who knows what the future holds?) Rainn Wilson: Rainn actually used to study karate. Rainn is a certified yellow belt; his character Dwight is a purple belt. Fun fact: During the fight, Rainn wears a huge protective piece of wraparound headgear while fighting, and in the course of filming, the friction of this headgear cut Rainn slightly in the face. Actually, that fact is not so fun. It's more like a sad fact. The frustrated 11-year-old girl: One of the kids playing Dwight's classmates is an 11-year-old girl who, in real life, is a black belt — but she had to wear a white belt in the scene. She was pissed. If you see a girl in the background giving a very overqualified kick, that's her. Her attitude was, "OK, I'll wear your white belt, but don't think I'm going to hide my skills." She practically knocked Rainn over when she kicked the pad he was holding. (In retrospect, she may have been fighting above her black-belt abilities, when you factor in the frustration element about appearing on television as a white belt when you know you're a black belt.) Lance Krall: Talented character actor Lance Krall plays Dwight's sensei, Sensei Ira. In real life, Lance — who also has his own show on Spike and turned in a memorably deadpan performance on The Joe Schmo Show — is a black belt in tae kwon do and was at one point nationally ranked. When we got to the editing room, we found, as always, that we had to make some cuts. In this case, we realized that to keep the entire jaw-dropping karate match, we had to cut a few extra moments that explained the background. Here are my two favorite moments that got cut: One is the exquisite line spoken by Dwight, explaining why he doesn't mind attending a karate class in which his peers are almost entirely 11-year-old girls: "I'm not here to make friends. I'm here to attack people." My other favorite extra moment is a prop. It's the poster at Dwight's dojo, explaining the "10 Rules of Karate": 1. Obey Your Parents 2. No Junk Food 3. Do Your Homework 4. Keep Your Room Clean 5. Maintain an Indomitable Spirit 6. Don't Fight with Your Siblings 7. Practice, Practice, Practice 8. Treat Others the Way That You Would Like to Be Treated 9. Be Loyal to Your Country 10. HAVE FUN!!! The fact that Dwight is paying to attend a karate school whose agenda is, at least in part, to teach its students to "Do Your Homework" and "Keep Your Room Clean" says so many wonderful things about him as a character. Enjoy the episode, keep an eye out for the girl with the crazy-strong kick, remember that Rainn is fighting injured, and maintain an indomitable spirit! And from Dwight's: http://blogs.nbc.com/office/ "When the fire heats the water to the boiling point, we have to keep it lighted with the same intensity, because if we reduce its flame, the water gets cold. It is not enough to boil the water, we have to keep it boiling all the time." - a famous oriental/asian karate proverb That is my philosophy in a nutshell. And that is why I study KARATE. (pronounced Ka-ra-TE'). I like to keep my water boiling all the time. That is the essence of my male power. And why I'm so good at sales. And why I'm so intense. Also, I study Karate so that I can injure people HARD if they wish me and mine harm. I want to be able to destroy them. I want to be able to kick them in the neck or throat if they come after me. Which is just a matter of time. It's also good cardio. Here in Scranton it is 46 degrees and SLEETY. I love sleet. It's so bracing. It's not snow (wimpy) or rain (annoying). It's sleet. It's its own thing. Sleet is the most unappreciated type of weather. This winter, let's all try and have a deeper respect for sleet and what it does and what it is. Also- think about the way the throat and swallowing works. The epiglotis decides what goes where down the trachea and/or esophogus. But it gets no respect. This tiny flap of skin in your neck decides if something is food or air. The food goes to your tummy. The air goes to your lungs. Without it your food would go straight into your lungs and clog them up. You'd have soup in your lungs. Or a sandwich. Or doritos. Or Fresca. OR you would get air in your tummy and be a big gassy fart bag all the time. All that from the tiny, powerful epiglotis. In many ways, I am like the epiglotis. Small, unappreciated, not well thought of or respected, but POWERFUL. So powerful that without me you'd have food in your lungs. Thoughts? Questions? Today's topic: "What part of the body are YOU most like?" (and don't say the genitals or the BUTT) That is all. Dwight K. Schrute
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2005 That reminds me, I'm glad BJ Novak was given a bigger role this season, on-screen and writing.
ZGangsta 0 Report post Posted November 3, 2005 God, that episode was hillarious. Jim refferencing West Side Story those couple times cracked me up. Jim: "Yeah well you know what they say, when you're a Jet you're a Jet all the way.." Michael: "Oh you were a Jet?" And Dwight's blog is sweet.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2005 Awesome interaction at the end there. Decent plot-based episode tonight. Kind of a waste of Tim Meadows, though.
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2005 I liked this episode, but they're kind of overdoing the tension between Jim and Pam at this point. We don't need to see in every episode them flirting then one of them getting mad at the other for something they said. I really liked Micheal on the phone under his desk. "No I didn't slip you anything".
ZGangsta 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2005 Michael on the phone: "Oh so you want to see other people? ...Only other people?"
Guest Fishyswa Report post Posted November 9, 2005 I died during that phone call, watching him go from over-confident to hiding under the desk was just gold. And if they're gonna do the "serious moments" I'd rather they'd be simple and to the point like last night.
treble 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 Another really good episode. Dwight was his usual awesome self during the first half of the show ('Do you have access to their medical records?' and his theory on why so many women in Scranton have yeast infections). I really liked how they used the cameras in this episode, too, like how they showed Dwight eating the Baby Ruth. The Dwight/Angela stuff has some potential, too. The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 "He's telling me he has a gun but can't show it to me." Not one of the best episodes, but some stuff was very funny. The Jim/Pam relationship is still cute. Kevin is such a creepy bastard. I don't want to know what he had on his computer.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 Michael in improv was some of the funniest stuff ever
C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 My only problem with the episode last night was that it made Michael too pitiful. They need to keep him at a level where he doesn't know how others feel about him. Him realizing that no one wanted him around was more depressing than funny. The improv stuff was gold though. Also, this was one of the funniest openings. "The IT Tech and I got off to a bad start" had me laughing through the entire commercial break.
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 Jim/Pam in the bedroom after Jim sat at his home desk. Pam: And where should I be? Is there any right way for Jim to answer that one?
DrVenkman PhD 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 That episode was gold. The IT Guy thing was awesome, Dwight is always good, and then Michael shooting everyone was really, really funny. The end of the episode did make him a bit too pathetic though, but I was really happy with the hour of TV I taped and watched after work last night.
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2005 (edited) Ughhhh, fuckin fatties robbing us of The Office on Tuesday. Never fear though, the Christmas Party is this week . . . CHRISTMAS PARTY 9:30pm 2005-12-06 ALL NEW! SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO SCRANTON -- Morale at the office Christmas party hits an all-time low after Michael (Steve Carell) suggests a game of "Yankee Swap" with the $20 secret Santa gifts - and everyone vies for the ipod he bought for Ryan (B.J. Novak). In an effort to raise his staff's sagging spirits, Michael introduces vodka shots and things liven up while Jim (John Krasinski) worries that the sentimental gift he got for Pam (Jenna Fischer) will end up in Dwight's (Rainn Wilson) hands. Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 "Happy birthday Jesus, sorry your party sucks." "Why'd you get such a big tree?" "First, that's what she said." Dwight paintballing. "Take that, Saddam!" High-quality episode right there. Awesome.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 For some reason I loved Packer's delivery of "What's up, my NERDS?" Kevin was also hilarious during the episode. Just a fantastic thirty minutes, and it beat a fairly disappointing My Name is Earl. I'd say Office edges Earl out by a small bit in terms of quality this year. But really, both are great. Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2005 Michael was at his complete assholeish during the first half of the episode, followed by the token Season Two redemption. "Dwight can be an elf because he has elfish characteristics." "Bob Vantz, Vantz Refrigeration." "What line of work are you in?" Michael taking the topless picture was gold. So now we've had two women caught kissing Dwight in a two-show period.

Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 The look on the Kevin's face when he shows the condoms was perfect. Meredith's "All right!" when she hears there's going to be alcohol was great as well. For once the sentimental moment at the end of the show didn't seem forced. I loved it. MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2006 Kind of an underwhelming episode from a comedy aspect, but it still had it's moments. "You think that'll be us some day?" "Nope." "WHAT?!?
