Special K Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I've expanded my horizons a bit, yet I think I'm still ignorant of the good rap out there. I like (pretty much in order) Del: first and foremost: Deltron 3030 is one of my top five favourite albums, bar none. De La Soul. Acelyone. Blackalicious. Kool Keith. (especially Dr. Octagon, I love the Automator.) The Grey Album (meaning I like jay-Z fairly well, but I particularly like this album). Mos Def. EPMD. Blue Scholars. Body Count. Dre/Snoop Dogg stuff. Beasties. I like what I hear from Dead Prez. They probably hate me, though. Roots. Run DMC. So drop a little knowledge on me. What are some other artists I should check out, given my preferences.
Big Ol' Smitty Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Talib Kweli Immortal Technique J5 Dilated Peoples Jedi Mind Tricks Mr. Lif Public Enemy GZA
Black Lushus Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 basically, don't buy anything "crunk"...though UGK, Outkast and Juvenile are good...
Matt Young Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I know it's not exactly the most unique choice, but you've got to love NWA. I'm about as white as they come, but I still highly enjoy their music.
mw679 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Eric B. and Rakim Redman Boogie Down Productions/KRS-One A Tribe Called Quest M.O.P. Gang Starr
Gary Floyd Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Anti-Pop Consortium Roots Manueva Beans Headset
Big Ol' Smitty Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I like what I hear from Dead Prez. They probably hate me, though. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Depends. Would you consider yourself "the man"? DP can get pretty silly politically, but the music is fucking sweet. DP got that crazy shit, we keep it crunk up John Blazed and shit
UZI Suicide Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 If you like Dre/Snoop you would like The Game. Also try Little Brother. They're along the line of a lot of the rappers you mentioned.
Lord of The Curry Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Jedi Mind Tricks is a good choice as mentioned before.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 Did I or anyone else ever recommend Ultramagnetic MCs Critical Beatdown last time, if you didn't have it? Cause that's Keith doing great things, and Ced Gee is even better.
Da Maintenance Man Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 Joe Budden Lupe Fiasco Saigon Stack Bundles
claydude14 Posted October 26, 2005 Report Posted October 26, 2005 I think Kweli and Mos Def have been mentioned, so logically I recommend Blackstar (hope I didn't miss someone mention it).
Special K Posted October 26, 2005 Author Report Posted October 26, 2005 Depends. Would you consider yourself "the man"? DP can get pretty silly politically, but the music is fucking sweet. Exactly. I should check out diggable planets, I remember liking their stuff, but that was a long time ago. KRS-One is great. Since two people have mentioned Saul Williams, I'll have to check him out. And Jedi Mind tricks. I like Jay-Z from the gray album, but that's all I've heard, other good albums by him? I know I have to check out Little Brother.
Big Ol' Smitty Posted October 26, 2005 Report Posted October 26, 2005 I like Jay-Z from the gray album, but that's all I've heard, other good albums by him? Blueprint (the first one) and Reasonable Doubt are the most highly regarded.
SpikeFayeJettEdBebop Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 I know they've been said but I agree with: Immortal Technique Talib Kweli Saul Williams
Brett Favre Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 I know the GZA was mentioned, but come on.
Dangerous A Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 Black Lushus mentioned it, but this needs pushing again. Outkast is awesome. Their stuff before their last double album is flat out sick. Also, while I'm not the biggest fan, Common's last album was fire on a stick.
Ed Wood Caulfield Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 Since you like the Beastie Boys, you may end up liking Quarashi too. They have many similatries (three white rappers, similar beats and lyrics), but they're not a complete knockoff of them. You gotta go to http://www.tonlist.com to download their albums (for free, btw), since only one of their albums (Jinx) is availiable to buy in the U.S. Xeneizes is their best album. I also think you should check out some of the nerdcore rap acts. MC Chris is good and he's pretty funny. MC Frontalot is another good one. And I second Public Enemy. Their new album, Rebirth Of A Nation just came out, but I have no idea if you can find it in any record stores.
