Don Caballero recently signed to Relapse, which is also pretty strange. I like 'em. I mentioned it at the other place, but certain tracks sound like old sabbath, some have an iron maiden feel, even kinda 80's megadeth sort of riffs in odd places, but they're never showoffy. Really "primitive" riffs, and although it's pretty easy to tell what they're going for, they don't do an injustice to anything, even if the vocals are part Sabbath-era Ozzy and part Geddy Lee. It almost turns into sounding like the Mars Volta at this one part, but it's not at all gay about it like The Mars Volta. I found it for 10 bucks, picked it up based on the name, and liked what I heard in the store. Pretty good stuff. "Death is the Answer" is definitely the standout track. When I learned that they signed to Relapse, I assumed they'd revert back to their more metal sound, but leader/drummer/sole original member Damon Che was saying that the new record will kinda synthesize all of their previous material. My rec of Don Caballero to Gene inspired me to put on American Don for the first time in awhile. So fucking good. I sort of wish that Lady Godiva didn't go into those weird vocals at the end. It's such a nice, lulling song. Of course, the shock of it's probably the point.
