CubbyBr 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 What does everyone think of the job Tenay and West have been doing since comin to Spike? To me, they're a major problem with the constant screaming and over-selling of everything. Before, it was just West but it seems like Tenay has inherited some of his bad qualities. They've got a lot to do with the way TNA comes off on television and a lot of the times, because of them, it comes off real bush-league. A Scott Hudson/Shane Douglas announce team would probably be a lot better or maybe some kind of 3-man combo.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 A year or two ago, I would have agreed with ousting West. But now? I expect him and look forward to his shilling. He's come a long way as a commentator, and Tenay is still one of the best PBP guys in the business (I'd put him right behind Joey Styles at the current moment, honestly). Though adding a third man to do, say, HEEL color would be awesome. I'm sick of two face commentators, since the best way to do the two-man commentary is have one be a heel (color) and one be a face (PBP). Plus, until JR was taken off the air, Raw's commentary was much worse than TNA's. JR was nothing but a parody of his former self, King was terrible, and Coach was only good when he was heelin' it up. razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I was watching the Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect match from Summerslam 91 or KOTR 93 and was amazed at how good a 3 man announce team can be. The way JR, Randy Savage, and Bobby Heenan worked together made the match so damn entertaining. So who can TNA bring in to be the 3rd announcer Shane Douglas or Raven? Steviekick 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I'd be all for Shane Douglas being the third/heel announcer. Who would do backstage interviews then?
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Make Borash do backstage interviews, or Scott Hudson or something.
CubbyBr 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I love the 3-man teams too. A lot of people might disagree, but if they made sure that he toned his catch phrases down, Konnan might be entertaining. I watched his commentary in WCW towards the end and it was pretty good. Shane Douglas would be another good choice as well as Raven, although I'm waiting for them to actually start usiing him and letting him do what he does best. Since he can't wrestle, they could put Kevin Nash in as the third man. Nash would bring a lot to the table in terms of actually being in the ring before and I bet feel of the overall show would be totally different in a good way. Nash is really entertaining on the mic, I think he'd be a good choice.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Nash would be perfect as the 3rd man if and only if he mocks Don West every time he screams or oversells something then Tenay could be like Monsoon "Will You Stop!".
Carnival 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Don West has gotten better, his screams still piss me off though. One thing I've noticed is West trying to call PBP sometimes when Tenay should be talking. Tenay has started screaming more aswell, i don't like it.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Don West is a necessary evil. Mike Tenay (who I love on play by play) is very weak at selling big moves...so they need someone over the top to balance the team. I would agree that a three man team would work. Look no further than all the times Christopher Daniels sat in and the commentary was excellent.
Silence 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 Tenay has started screaming more aswell, i don't like it.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Tenay's been screaming for quite sometime now. Carnival 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I just hate the "character" Mike Tenay. he's just lame. Interviewing Jarrett with a pouty look on his face. Remember the Stacy Kiebler interview Tenay conducted in WCW at like a hospital or something...."How many guys has it been Stacy?...20...30...100?" EVIL TENAY
Guest Zarock Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I like Tenay, but I think West should be replaced with a heel commentator.

EVIL TENAY <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That was gold. However, I think Tenay is a good announcer anyway. However, if you had to put with the morons that do the commentary for Impact on Eurosport you wouldn't complain about Tenay/West.

UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 They're both terrible and remind me of WCW 2001, in that they hype every basic maneuever as if its groundbreaking, despite their company being incredibly bush league in an attempt to equal production of WWE. Magus 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2005 I think adding another character to the table would be nice. Douglas is the best option, as it PAINS me to see him act like such a buffoon when he was a Heel God at one time. Put him on the other side of Tenay and let him just be a dick about everything. It would add a completely new element. I'm fine with Tenay and West, sort of. West has indeed gotten better. What I can't stand about Tenay is that they've been trying to portray him as a character on the show instead of the call-it-as-I-see-it announcer. He shouldn't be interviewing wrestlers and he shouldn't be yelling at the heels during the show; that's West's job. Tenay needs to be more neutral to the angles while still putting over who the good guys and bad guys are. Leave the yelling and outrage to West, because that's what the color man does. I hate when lead announcers are used as characters, and especially when they use that character (JR, anyone?) to further angles and get wrestlers over. That might be alright for the color man, but not the PBP guy.

razazteca 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Tenay as the professor is the only character that is believable. West is ok at what he does which is basically Jerry Lawler on a good day or 2 steps below Bobby Heenan. Why not have Johnny Polo as the 3rd man, I think as an announcer Raven could add more to the "TNA is holding me down" storyline by bitching and complaining during matches then having 3 minute backstage skits with Larry "The Chess Master" Zybrisko and Shane "I'm just happy to be on tv" Douglas. Fro 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Tenay is the best. Douglas and West should just swap jobs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree on that 100%. Let Don West do the interviews and the hard sells for the cards, ala Mean Gene. Although I do mark for Don West at this point a lot. What really sold it for me is when he put the gore over more than Paul Heyman did. Absolutely nobody outshills Don West.
Guest OSIcon Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Tenay is really bad as a lead announcer/character. I don't want to say he is bad as a play-by-play guy because he was fine in WCW in this role on Saturday Night and other shows from time to time. He is really good as the color guy in a three-man booth. His role in TNA doesn't really work. His screaming and selling of action in the ring is incredibly annoying. He should never scream. Tenay's shilling also leaves a lot to be desired as even though he probably does believe a lot of what he says, it still comes off forced. If Tenay played it completely straight like he used to, he'd be a lot better off. I know Scott Hudson as another full time job but they should have tried to work something out for him. Guest Coffey Report post Posted November 22, 2005 The way I've always saw it, Tenay & West are the second worst part about TNA. Just behind the Orlando crowd and just ahead of Jarrett. Maybe it's just because I never want to think my opinion is wrong but if you like Tenay & West, you're probably just a TNA "apologist" that don't want to go into details about the negatives without trying to find some lackluster light at the end of the tunnel. "It's not WWE commentary," "they've got better," "it's different/refreshing," etc. Don West is terrible. Preaching "he's got better" isn't an argument. He was the drizzling shits when he started. Now he's just the shits. That means he's still terrible. Him shilling EVERYTHING by just randomly screaming isn't a good thing. It's not a good thing when you're as excited for a curtain jerk spot as you are for a title change. West is certainly NOT a "necessary evil." Tenay is more tolerable than West but his weaknesses really stand out when he's in a two-man team, doing play-by-play as opposed to color commentary and trying to carry the other commentator. He should also never be shown on camera. He has some of the worst facial expressions in the business. His "mean/"I don't like you"" face just pisses me off. Tenay is "very weak as selling big moves" because he's not a play-by-play commentator! He should be doing color, possibly as a third man like he did in WCW, which has been mentioned several times. Of course, if TNA were to go to a three-man commentary team now, they'd be "ripping off WWE" again. To be fair, listening to Tenay/West is more tolerable than Klaus/Rivera of XPW. I don't know where they'd rank against the ROH commentators and their constant shilling of "match of the year candidate" and "ROHWrestling.com for all your shoot promo needs!" though. Still, West is really bad and Tenay is out of posistion. That doesn't make a good commentary team or even a mediocre one. They're painfully below average. I think West should leave the booth completely. He doesn't have to leave the company, maybe take over The Franchise's role backstage? Tenay should be moved to color and TNA should look for a new play-by-play guy. That's just another problem with the business today though, there's not good play-by-play guys left that are interesting in pro-wrestling. I mean, WWE had to go out and get Joey Styles!
