Farrellys accuse South Park of stealing plot

Recommended Posts

So the Farrelly's think they're the only people to ever come up with the idea of pretending to be handicapped and compete in the special olympics?

When I was still in high school, me and some buddies used to joke about that same subject. Perhaps I could sue the Farrelly's for ripping off MY idea?

"When you think of a premise so radical it's unmakable, you hang in for seven years to see it through, it is a shock to the system to have people on Websites saying, 'You hack, you stole this from South Park,' " Blitt tells Variety. "I set this up so long before that episode was conceived. It is bad enough to have your idea taken: It's 1,000 times worse when you are then accused of stealing."

I'd like to go on the record as saying this guy is a complete idiot if he thinks that premise is in any way remarkable or extraordinary. Also, Trey and Matt are funnier on their worst day then the Farrelys are on their best.

"The Farrellys, meanwhile, are attempting to stage their long-gestating update of The Three Stooges."

Stooges + cursing and excessive poop jokes would suck.

I will not see the movie because it takes a joke that can only carry about 5 minutes worth of jokes and stretches it out to a 90 minute film.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Maybe they'll have good subplots...like how the SP ep had the anti-steroids stuff.

The funniest part of that ep were the athletes no-selling Jimmy's rant.

The funniest part was Cartman coming in dead last in every event. Or the Put it to the Limit montage with Cartman reading books on how to appear handicapped, taking notes on the Special Ed bus, taking notes while looking at a Kid Rock video, and making a 3D model of him walking on the computer.

It must suck to make a movie knowing that everyone who sees it will be going "Wow, this was 100 times funnier when South Park did it!"

When I was in grade school I joked about the same subject with my stuffed animals. You'll be hearing from my lawyer early next week.

EDIT: I just remembered this: There was a Married with Children where Al competes in the Senior Games.

In other news, I accuse the Farrellys of failing to do a good movie since "Outside Providence".

Oh, don't beat them up over it, if people are accusing them of ripping off South Park, they have a right to say something. Otherwise I agree with ya'll.

And that movie was awesome partly because the Farrellys' only wrote Outside Providence.

Actually that movie was awesome because of Amy Smart.

But come to think of it, didn't they use the whole "fake being handicapped" joke in that movie. Wait, they're stealing from themselves!

I noticed the trailer on iTunes for the movie - that was June of LAST YEAR.

Maybe they should've got off of their asses and put out the movie.

Unless the Farrellys showed or told Matt and Trey the actual idea, I don't think the Farrellys have grounds to sue. Since it might be concendental that South Park did it first.

Meh. It's a made-for-South Park premise, anyway.

I know what you're saying, though (case in point: "Rebound" which had been delayed for over two years). It's not as if the South Park episode took the edge off of the story - it can't translate to the big screen well.

You're not versed on how the movie industry works, huh?

If my memory serves, they've been trying to make this movie for like 5 years but decided to wait for approval/support from the real Special Olympics. They were delayed while searching out real SO athletes, and whatnot.

South Park didn't have to care about getting approval or not, seeing as they weren't going to be including real SO participants to appear in their cartoon version.

The South Park took their plot thing kinda holds weight, regardless of how pointless it is, as Matt and Trey, in recent seasons, have been trying to create episodes that are based around a current news item, or at least have a hidden meaning to connect them.

I made this as the subject for my computer animation porfolio in 1999. Kid acts retarded, loses in all the events. Then says that he did it to help their self esteem.

You don't hear me bitching. Almost everyone has thought of that.

Actually the SP episode wasn't really about Cartman pretending to be developmentally disabled, it was about Steroid abuse as well. They really were taking shots at MLB in this one and it was timely as teh Balco case had just gotten underway at the time.

Completely forgot about this.

My bad.

The film's been in the can for probably a year and a half now. The distributor has held onto it, however, because they had no idea how to market it.
