James Dungy, the 18-year-old son of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, was found dead at 1:30 a.m. ET Thursday in his apartment in Lutz, Fla., a suburb of Tampa, Debbie Carter, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Thursday.

 

In a news release on its Web site, the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office said it "responded to the Campus Lodge Apartments this morning at approximately 1:32 a.m. The girlfriend of James Dungy had returned to the apartment and discovered Dungy."

 

Police performed CPR on Dungy before he was taken to University Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

 

No foul play is suspected, but a cause of death won't announced pending an autopsy, said Vida Morgan, a secretary in the sheriff's public information office.

 

Tony Dungy has left the Colts and is in Tampa, ESPN has learned.

 

The coach and his wife, Lauren, have four other children: daughters Tiara and Jade, and sons Eric and Jordan.

 

The Colts (13-1) are at Seattle on Saturday.

 

Fans posted prayers and messages of support for Dungy, who also coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on a message board on a Colts fan Web site.

 

"Not only was he a great football coach for the Bucs, but he is an even better person," one Tampa Bay fan wrote. "It makes me sick that it happened at this time of year to a person that is so giving and caring."

 

Another person wrote for God to give strength to Dungy during this difficult time.

 

"When things like this happen it adjusts our perspective on life," one person wrote. "What was considered major yesterday doesn't amount to more than a footnote today."

In fairness, it should be pointed out that the official cause of death has not yet been determined. The news reports pointing towards suicide may prove to be accurate but are still unofficial for the moment.

Even worse is that we have to deal with the NFL's and network's posturing that if the Colts win next week's "emotional" game, it will make this kid's death a little easier to take. As if burying your child and a sport are even comperable.

 

I'm only saying this becuase it pissed me off earlier this year when ESPN and other sports announcers were basically insinuating that when New Orleans seemed like a decent team ealier this year, it somehow made the flooding of the entire city all better.

Who cares what ESPN does with this news? It is a terrible event for anyone to endure and I don't think we should be making jokes about it. Condolences to Tony Dungy and his entire family, sad that this had to happen right around Christmas time.

ah...I thought JustJoe was referring to somebody here...I have no jokes whatsoever for tragic deaths...I do, however, have jokes for the idiotic ways folks like ESPN will use this news.

 

Did they when Belichick's father died? I barely remember a peep.

They usually only do those huge emotional stories when it's someone close to a player that dies. Rarely do they do it for coaches.

Well look at his Myspace page, kid isnt all there obviously.

 

Sorry for his family and all but IMO one less future problem for society.

 

If that post is is something that could get me banned than i'm sorry but I dont have any sympathy for people like that. I'll keep my future opinions to myself about stuff like this.

That's a little harsh. There's millions of kids who type utter stupidity on myspace. Not all of them will be cancers to society. Just a large percentage of them.

Last month pro wrestler Eddie Guererro was found dead in a hotel room.

 

Mainstream media talk show hosts automatically drum up the "steroids, drugs, ect" rant even before a toxiologly report is out. Hell most of them spouted their speculations without even knowing that Guererro battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, and was even fired from the WWF for it (as well as getting in a drunk driving accident that nearly killed him) so while it probably was an accurate speculation, there was no good reason to go on the air and start putting two and two together

 

So a 18 year old black teen, living outside Tampa is found dead in his apartment. And just because he is Tony Dungy's son there is no speculation, there is no "come on, put two and two together" there is just simple condolences, the "well that puts things into perspective" speechs

 

Yes it would be highly irresponsible to do so, to make comments relative to the line of thinking about a kid who grows up without a father for the most part in his life (hell a father who works in another STATE) and speculation that drugs could be involved, but the fact is that the Guerrero story was met with all sorts of speculation without any sort of "Oh gotta feel bad for the Guerrero family, and he had young kids as well..." so there is a double standard when it comes to coverage of the sudden passing of people

 

I swear the media stinks so bad it makes me wonder why in the hell I ever wanted to become one of them

I'm sure most people think about it... but, the media can't speculate like that on a black person. Especially the kid of Tony Dungy, who one would think is a decent kid.

My point is more, why broadcast speculatory comments. If they did for Eddie Guerrero, why not for this kid

 

Personally I would find it just as disgusting and offensive to go on the air and say it, or even speculate on the socital impact of being a son of a famous coach or whatever, (strains the culture of coaching has on families, ect)

 

But I'm pointing out a major double standard when it comes to someone in a fringe segment of entertainment which is considered no better than porn and the kid of a major NFL head coach

There are all kinds of people on myspace like that. So fucking what. Just because he seems like a fucking idiot, he doesn't deserve to die. Even if he brought it upon himself, it's a tremendous loss for his family and friends.

 

Just because he's not your friend or family member doesn't mean his death doesn't matter. He's gone forever and if you're ever to disrespect a man, this isn't the time. My condolences go out to anyone who is affected by the tragedy, especially his close family and friends.

 

No one deserves to die this young. Period.
