Got a new men's 100-meter record. Jamaica's Usain Bolt with a time of 9.72

That's fucking ridiculous.

I simply can no longer get excited about records in track and field. Next year we will find out he is on bull testosterone or something.

LOL...Big Brown was practically guaranteed to win the Belmont and he (it) didn't even come close. Whoever bet on Da'Tara made some serious dough today.

Too bad, I was hoping for a triple crown winner. I figured Big Brown was fucked because of his foot problems, but when I saw this morning that Casino Drive dropped out I thought he had a chance.

And here comes the excuse train, from bad left foot to the heat to fatigue to a kick from Da'Tara early in the race.

From what I saw, it looked like he was just blown up at the 3/4-1 mile part.

EDIT: Oh, ouch, Big Brown's the first Triple Crown favorite to finish last. I guess it's fitting that a horse named after a sponsor with a confirmed allegation of steroid usage is the one with that distinction, though I would have used the same argument had he won the race.

$76 to win on a $2 ticket to be exact. The exacta was over six grand.

EDIT: BIG BROWN IS NOT HURT!! Thank Christ, I was about to organize a candlelight vigil.

Man, I keep hoping that Federer finally breaks through and wins the French, but that little pest Nadal keeps getting in his way. Nadal's practically unbeatable on clay. Oh well.

It's not unconceivable that Milton Bradley could be traded to the White Sox if the Rangers fall behind further in the AL West, and continue to have no pitching staff what so ever. This makes me want to ask the question of who would win in a fistfight... Milton Bradley or Ozzie Guillen.

I'm taking Milton.

What if QB Arnie Herber (Green Bay Packers 1930-1940, 1944, 1945) didn't miss time for the war?

Team USA Baseball announced their final roster of invitees. This is not the Olympic team, rather the amateur team that represents the country in many competitions no one cares about.

The reason I point this out is because of a young infielder from Baylor U. named Shaver Hansen. Most of you are familiar with his father, Stan.

I was reading about this story on ESPN and about how the catcher has lost his chance to play college ball because of this OBVIOUS attempt to hit the ref and the obvious conspiracy between the pitcher and the catcher.

Am I like, the only one on the planet to see that the ball hit the batter, bounced off the ref and the catcher was obviously looking for the ball to be low.

Whats being suggested here is that the pitcher either has a MONSTER curve ball, or is so accurate he knew he would bouce the ball off the batters helmet into the umps face. I am somehow doubting that skill.

I think these kids are getting a raw deal here.

I think you could make that argument until he ran away from the batter's box, which made it look like it was intentional. But yeah, it's not like the ump wasn't wearing a mask for a reason, you know?

Ripper, if the ball hit the batter first it would be a dead ball, and the runner would not be able to advance to third. If the ball hit the batter, he would immediately say something to the umpire, no? And if the catcher was looking for a low pitch, would he put his glove face down on the ground?

Watch the ball. There is no way it didn't hit something. Or, like I said, that kid has a AMAZING curve ball.

Also, you have to take into account that Ump moved while the pitcher was already in his motion. If this was intentional, this was one of the greatest throws ever. He hit a moving target with a curveball and the catcher has the perfect timing to move out the way.

I mean hell, the kid was cupping his glove for a low pitch. I personally think it was either a cross up or that pitch got away from the kid.

I watched again. That ball sailed in straight, hit the umpire's mask, and dropped straight down. There is absolutely nothing special about that pitch. If it hit the batter at all, he'd be awarded first base.

It wasn't a curveball. The extreme camera angle makes it look like the pitch might have broken away from the batter, but I thought it was pretty straight.

The pitcher would know exactly where the umpire would be when the pitch arrived at home plate. He has to be looking over the catcher's shoulder.

I didn't see anything in that clip that would make me think hitting the umpire wasn't intentional.

The "Magic Ball" theory? Back and to the right. I didn't take a look at the link, but if what your saying is true, that's pretty fucked up.

So, I really hate my local ESPN Radio. I live in Wilmington, North Carolina. NORTH CAROLINA. So then, why, exactly, does my local ESPN radio fucking switch over to PBP for *every* goddamned Yankees game?

Fuck the Yankees. Fuck Baseball. Give me something I might actually be interested in listening to.

I'm going to have to side with al on that one. I mean that ball didn't have the slightest bit of dip on it to indicate it was going to drop at all, let alone require a block...

Just for the rest of us, the article in question (I think, it's the only one I found):

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3450245

Look at that first screencap. The catcher's already not looking at the ball and it just becomes more pronounced with each frame.

Mike and the Mad Dog are "breaking up" after 19 years on the air together. Truly a sad day in Sports Journalism.

Obviously the YES network will not renew the contract at the end of the year.

eh, it was an entertaining 6 and a half years of schlock

Sorry I haven't seen this thread in awhile, but you've gotta be kidding me right? Its like Reilly said, no matter what, if a catcher gets the pitch crossed up, he still makes an EFFORT to catch the ball.

Maybe it's just me, but I think ESPN could have worded this headline better:

NHRA's Kalitta dies in Funny Car crash

Yeah, probably replacing "Funny Car" with "Drag Racing" might have been the way to go there. Even if that headline is technically correct, it's a little offputting to anyone who doesn't know that at least one type of drag racing cars are in fact called 'Funny Cars'. Also, even if you do know that, it makes you give a double-take.

The CFL season starts on Thursday and I just now noticed that Comcast Sportsnet won't be carrying CFL this year, and there doesn't appear to be any U.S. coverage for the CFL this season which really blows. I usually lose interest in the league once college football seasons starts but I've enjoyed watching it during the summer as an alternative to god awful NFL preseason football.

I'm lucky in that YES, SNY, and MSG use CFL games for filler. It's mostly tape delay, which sucks, but I get an occasional live game.
